what is the inseam length off the shorts after the leg is removed? I did see it say 10 inches. Is this correct?

Great Pant of Versatile Weather

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: medium

I bought these pants for my job at the University of Utah's grounds crew because of the variable weather we work in. The water resistance as well as the convertible nature of these pants made them perfect for the job. No matter what weather I'm working in, I can pretty much always rely on these pants.

Durable

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M/Reg

Material feels pretty burly and durable. Has sort of a stiff feel like a hard shell almost. The zip offs are a nice feature. The zippers are color coded so it's easy to zip it back into pants mode. Pocket placements were well thought out and the belt it comes with does the job. Although, I'm not sure how long the plastic buckle on the belt will last.

    Bought as a gift

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: Runs large

Bought it as a gift for my brother, looked at the size chart as a guide but it didn't fit as expected. Runs large.

Do you have The North Face Paramount Trail Convertible Pant - Men's in stock
with 30 inch inseam and 30 inch length? which of your sizes would that correspond to?

    Hey Wolfgang!

The closest size to that would be the S/Short, which has a 30" waist and 29.5" inseam. Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions; I'm always happy to help you out.

    Hiking

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Settled on Large

I like them. I utilized the pants for a 30 mile hike in weather that varied from 83F on day one, heavy rain on day two, and finally 26F with snow by day three, that sucked. We ended up just hiking out and leaving the third day as our gear was soaked from the second day even though it was under our rain gear. The pants were not an issue, although my rain jacket of the same brand was rendered useless from the heavy rain. The pants allowed for adequate ventilation on the first day as well as protection against the wind and cold by the third day. They were surprisingly warm.
I am a little unhappy with the fact that the sipper handle dislodged on one of the pant legs after only being used a few times. Sipper still works. Other than that they did stain slightly with minimal use and the sizing was an issue. I ended up trying on three pairs before I found a fit. The sizing charts did not help. On the plus side, Backcountry shipped all three for free and allowed free returns until I found the correct size, so fantastic job there. Pay attention to the length variation with change in size up or down. Tried on an X-large first, but could have used that pair as a sleeping bag.
Overall they are probably worth the money at a discount but maybe not full price?

    Awesome Hiking Pants

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: S/Short

After a lot of trial and error, I finally found some great hiking pants to give my boyfriend! The fit on these is perfect. They are a great length, not too baggy in the legs, and he loved the zippers at the bottom to make it easier for boots. The pants fit him true to size and are just what he was looking for. They are a tad long, but with boots on you can't even tell.

They are a great material, comfy and perfect for the trail. He also LOVES that they convert into shorts for when it warms up during the day. He likes to wear pants when hiking to protect his legs from branches, and likes that he has the option for shorts if it gets too hot in the day. These are the perfect versatile pants for hiking.

    Great for hiking

Sizes are way off - Couldn't find a fit

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Just like the previous version of these pants (Paramount Peak) the sizing is way off on these. I actually couldn't find a pair that fit and had to return both pairs of Small/Long and Medium/Long.

I'm 186cm / 6'1 with athletic build and no weird proportions - I have no problems finding a size in any other pants. The S/Long is way too tight around the waist and top of pant. The M/Long should therefore be the winner, but the difference in size was way too great for one step up in sizing. It felt and looked like I was wearing "Dad's pants". The belt could not fix the problem. Just way too big.

No idea what's going on at The North Face design team with these. They need to sort this out. Exact same thing with the previous version so this is not a one off.

    Survived Alaska...and Seattle

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

Great pants; very versatile. Bought them primarily for # weeks in Alaska. Needed durable long pants for cold weather, rain, hiking, and rafting water. They served me well. Kept me warm and dry.
They also easily converted into shorts on our stop-over in Seattle which had a warm spell, with sunshine. Handled both environments with ease.

    Very Good Pants

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium/Long

Pants are comfortable when hiking, and even when scrambling over rocks. The nylon material lasts a long time. Many pockets, and two pockets have zippers. Belt included is a good feature. Backcounty.com offered a good price and service.

    Solid Product

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

I have only had these for a short period but right from the start I used them to summit a 14'er, the pants were versatile (zip off at the knee), repelled water well and held up to wear and tear.

    Unanswered Question

The product description here says the inseam is 32", but doesn't say which length that it applicable to (I assume "regular"). What is the inseam on the "long" style pants?

Do these pants have ankle zips or do you need to remove your boots to get the legs off?

Judging from the second photo above and additional photos on another seller's website, these have ankle zips.
