Fiandre Glove

You demand two things from winter cycling gloves: warmth and waterproofing. Sportful's Fiandre Gloves deliver both in a relatively straightforward package that puts the emphasis on functionality, not techno gadgetry. The stretchy synthetic fabric is laminated to a waterproof and breathable OutDry membrane that'll stand up to even the nastiest sleet, snow, and rain, and the soft fleece lining keeps your hand warm while helping move moisture away from your skin for quick and easy evaporation.

Sportful constructed the cuff out of snug, waterproof neoprene and finished it with a convenient hook-and-loop closure while a synthetic grip patter at the palm provides confident braking, shifting, and bike handling. The Fiandra also has a pre-curved shape for comfort when you're gripping the bars, and is decked out with reflective details so you're visible through the storm.

  • Sportful gloves designed for the harshest winter conditions
  • Stretch-woven outer shell is bonded to an OutDry membrane
  • Neoprene cuff seals tight to your skin to keep moisture out
  • Cozy fleece lining adds insulating warmth
  • Synthetic palm with injected silicone zones adds durability and grip
  • Pre-curved shape improves your hold on the bar
  • Reflective S logo increases your visibility in low light

A bit long

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Size Bought: Large

These seem to be very nice gloves, but they just don't fit my hands well. I have the same issue with many gloves: The finger length is good for my 3rd and 4th fingers, but too long on my others and thumb. Too bad--they seem like they'd be warm without that much bulk. I usually wear size large gloves, though infrequently XL, and in Rapha I wear size M.

No such thing as waterproof gloves

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I bought these gloves on sale, as I have had good luck with Sportful products overall. They are well constructed, fit true to size (I'm size L in these and Castelli). They have a nice textured palm without any stupid gel padding patches, a large neoprene cuff that is adjustable via velcro, and they allow reasonable dexterity on the bars for a thermal glove.

However, the notion that these gloves using the OutDry membrane are waterproof is the same as every other glove claiming to be waterproof, and that is crazy. I gave them a 90 minute test on a road ride in light-moderate rain at a temp of 8 Celsius (45 F). My hands were dry for the first 50 minutes, then progressed to soaked by the end. As a guy who rides a lot year round in the greater Vancouver area, I can say the best gloves for riding in the rain when the temp is below about 10 C is neoprene like the Castelli Diluvio. Similar neoprene gloves can be found at any outdoor store selling kayak equipment. One's hands will be wet in the neoprene, but warm. The only caveat is that if it stops raining the neoprene will not do much as the gloves dry and eventually one will have cold hands. That is why the savvy PNW rider never leaves on a wet ride with less than 2 pair of gloves :)

Now, back to the Sportful Fiandre. I think these gloves will prove to be solid performers in very light rain/drizzle and also on dry rides with the temp in the 5-10 Celsius range. Again, they are well built and at the sale price I think they are good value but just don't believe the hype of waterproof.
