So Ill Holds Street Climbing Shoe
So Ill HoldsStreet Climbing Shoe

Street smarts for advanced climbing.

The Street Climbing Shoe is So Ill's most aggressive, downturned shoe for the gym's hardest boulders and routes. An ultra-thin midsole gives this shoe superior softness for feeling the smallest jibs on the wall. Its Dark Matter rubber comes from So Ill's UnParallel Rubber family, which the Navy Seals use for reliable traction during covert missions, and its non-marking convenience ensures long-lasting durability. The synthetic upper has a padded tongue for comfort, and since it doesn't stretch much, So Ill recommends sizing the shoe similarly to your regular street shoe.

I like them

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought these way back when they had a Kickstarter. I initially ordered my street shoe size, (women's 7 - which is also what I wear in Five Ten), but they were way too small. I sent them back for a 7.5, and they were great.

These shoes actually fit very much like Five Ten Blackwings - my usual shoe. I like that the Streets are low-cut around the ankle bone, but the heel is still very secure. I have low ankle bones, so brands like La Sportiva and Scarpa, which are higher cut, rub blisters. The Streets are very comfortable and do not take a long time to break in. The upper is very soft and almost "cushiony."

The rubber is nice, soft and sticky ......again, a lot like my Blackwings, except maybe a bit softer and thicker. These would be my favorite shoe except for one issue, they did really develop a special kind of stink, kind of like Evolvs used to do. It must be something with the synthetic upper.

I think these would be my favorite climbing shoe if it weren't for the stank, so if you can handle that, I'd give these a try..

Dig em

I just ordered my second pair. I have had my first pair for probably 6 months. The toe rubber is finally giving in on me from toe drag. I climb 2-3 times a week. They fit snug, so I never have an issue w/ heal hooks. I ordered my street size (8.5 mens) I actually just ordered a 9 for my second pair. Edges are good.. no complaints. After 20% off, paying around $100 bucks for a mildly aggressive shoe feels like a steal.

Good performance but poor durability

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 10.5

Second pair of climbing shoes ever. I really love their performance in edging and heel hooks. They fit my feet pretty well and the rubber works fine in the gym for tiny holds and general smearing.

However, the rubber started breaking at the seams around the ball of my feet within a month or so of use, (also mentioned in other reviews) probably because the rubber is so soft and the glue could not hold it. Not sure if it's because of the extensive use, but would have liked a shoe that lasted a longer time. Really enjoyed the performance.

Agree with the other review that the smell gets pretty bad. Size up as recommended by so-ill on their website.

Nice with some reservations

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 44

I backed this via Kickstarter and was glad to finally receive them. I wear a 44 in Sportiva shoes and ordered a 44 So Ill... Way too small! I ended up getting a 46 that fit better.

After a few months in the gym, the glue on the upper holding the rubber near the lower buckle (on both shoes) is coming undone. Additionally, the velcro straps - especially the bottom ones- are way too long. [A simple fix is to cut them] Other than the quality assurance issues, my biggest criticism is the speed at which they keep smell (ie odor). Of the 5 pairs of climbing shoes, these are by far the most odoriferous.

With that said, I do like the rubber. It is a bit on the softer side and I believe gives nice feedback. Lastly, they do look pretty nice

Thanks so much for your review, on this new product, Jason. I'm glad the will work out, with a little bit of help from our friend, odor eater.

Not Sure

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: 7.5

I just received these shoes and they felt very soft and comfortable despite being so aggressive. According to their website (http://soillholds.com/collections/climbing-shoes/products/the-street-pre-release) it says that women should order a size down from their street shoe size, so since I wear an 8.5 I ordered a 7.5. I put them on and the first thing I noticed was that I could lift my heel up and down without the shoe even moving, it was that loose! Heel hooks were definitely not going to be a possibility. Part of the problem might be that the top velcro closure is lower on my feet than the top closure of any of the other shoes I own. Despite that they felt pretty good and I am going to try them a half size and a full size down from what I got to see if that solves this. I'll update when I try the smaller shoes to see if it fixed these problems.
