Why We Like The Ignite MIPS Helmet

Finding the right aero helmet can be a challenge. There are a number of boxes that can be tricky to check, firstly, aerodynamics, then breathability, comfort, fit, and style. The first few may be easy to tick, but many aero helmets are a bit lacking when it comes to the aesthetic department, and result in you resembling a bobblehead or cartoon character. In spite of the challenge in the design department, Smith has pushed beyond the com1petition to deliver a helmet that offers protection, aerodynamics, ventilation, and it looks damn good too, with the Ignite MIPS Helmet. The Ignite is built with Smith's signature Aerocore in-mold construction, combing a hard polycarbonate shell with EPS foam, and Koroyd material that keeps ventilation a priority, while adding something to the protection game with a honeycomb structure.

  • An aero helmet that ups the game in the style department
  • Sleek aesthetic pairs with ventilation to keep you cool
  • In-mold polycarbonate-EPS construction absorbs impacts
  • MIPS technology protects from certain rotational forces
  • AirEvac system pulls cool air in, and warm air out
  • Odor fighting lining keeps you fresh all ride long
  • Dial in the perfect fit with VaporFit adjustment system
  • Optimized vent placement ideal for holding eyewear

There's such a thing as too much neon

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size

This is a solid helmet and the black/neon green was on sale a at a great deal. I tried it on and it fit fit well. However, combine the helmet's color scheme with my blue/neon yellow tri-suit and neon green shoes... Well, it was too much so I returned it.

About as Good as Aero Helmets Get

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

When I look at helmets, I have some set criteria: fit, weight, aero, venting, and ease-of-use. Gee whiz features such as lights, bug netting, and such factor in, but they're nice to have.

I'm sponsored by another bike company that starts with "S", but I wasn't too thrilled with their aero road helmet. So on a whim, I ordered an Ignite.
Fit: The helmet is *very* true-to-size. My head is about 1/2cm below the Medium and it just fits. I won't be wearing a cap underneath this one. It's also very comfortable. It sits high on the head, but the dial ensures everything is snug with no pinching. I didn't have to fiddle with the straps, but you can if you want. Which is more than some others.
Weight: This helmet is a bit heavier than some of the competition. I was concerned because I do races where I'm in the saddle from 5 - 20 hours. In the hand or on the head, I couldn't tell the difference in weight. Plus the balance is nicely done, which is easier on the neck.
Aero: I don't have a wind tunnel, but it feels fast and quiet.
Venting: No helmet is perfect, and this is where I took a star. It's better than most aero helmets, but not as good as my Prevail. It does have great airflow and the channeling will work for most. Plus the forehead gap is amazing when it gets hot (just remember sunscreen).
Ease-of-use: An aero helmet with sunglasses parking! Just, uh, practice a lot first. The fit is precise. The clasp is easy to use and easy to find. The helmet stays in place over long hours.
Extras: Koroyd allows Smith to make the helmet a bit slimmer, so it avoids the Mario Bros. look of most aero helmets. The color blocking may look a bit weird in standalone photos, but when you're wearing it, makes the helmet seem much smaller. The construction is excellent, with no glue or sticky tape out of place and no unbonded seams (all things I've seen on some very expensive helmets).

If you're going to be climbing in hot weather all day, take a look at the Trace. If you're looking to zoom along at a fast century or crit, you really can't do much better than the Ignite. Added bonus: you won't look like every other Masters' racer out there.
