    If you’re thinking of moving up to 11 speeds, the Shimano drivetrain gives you reliability and shifting prowess. Its XTR SL-M9000 Trigger Shifters perfectly complement the derailleurs for a fuss-proof shifting system. While the primary aesthetics of the XTR triggers remain largely unchanged from the last XTR model, the materials have changed a bit. The thumb shifter is now carbon fiber and the trigger is coated with a textured finish to increase grip. The internals received a bit more of a makeover. Using VIVID index, each shift is reduced in effort by nearly 20 percent, while at the same time the shift action itself feels more positive. Ball bearings are used as guides and polymer-coated ultra-low-friction cables have been added. So that you’re able to configure your shifting exactly the way you like it, the shifters are sold separately in either left or right hand versions. Please order one of each if you’d like a matching set.

    The brains of the operation!

    The shifter is like the brains of the operation when it comes the drivetrain system. The cables and housing that's the nervous system. The chain and cassette is like your knee and hip that's going to wear out and you'll just have to have replaced anyway if you keep carrying on like this! The derailleur is like your foot that you're just going to break off if you keep hucking your bike to flat and keep riding so gosh darn loose!
    I'm all for spending a little extra coin to have a little more going on upstairs when it comes to candle power in the shifting duty department. The precision of shifts and the feel of your thumb on the ol' shifter paddle relative to Shimano's other shifter options is tangible! Try saying that 3x fast!
    With all of the aforementioned in mind, I have this shifter paired with an RD-M8000 XT rear derailleur and other 11 speed drivetrain giblets and am very pleased with the overall shifting performance.

    Worth the upgrade from XT

    Running an XT drivetrain, and wasn't happy with how stiff the XT shifter felt. I upgrade to the XTR and problem solved.

    AMAZING performance - Worth paying extra

    Decided to spend a few extra $ on the XTR shifter to pair with my M8000 rear derailleur and cassette. Boy am I happy I did. this was the best performing 11spd shift combination I've ever ridden. The XO1 11sp is not even close to as good, and I've own both now for at least a season.

    1 thing to note - The XTR gear is always weight conscious. Thus, you'll have to make sure you are careful with it. I bumped a tree (not hard) and snapped the shift lever right off. Turns out the lever is carbon fiber and not replaceable. Had to purchase a new shifter. Was a little dissapointed, but once I got the new one, I completely forgot about paying the price again... It's simply that good...

    Upgraded the SLX on my new bike to XTR shifter and R/D. Incredible difference. Totally worth it, esp at sale price. Light action shifting at its finest.

    This new version has a better click sound so you know it has gone into the gear you want. The shifting is smooth and about as good as it gets unless you make the jump to electronic, but the price for electronic isn't worth the price when the quality on this shifting is fantastic.

    Crisp, light, reliable. Allows you to downshift (bigger cog) 3 at a time and upshift (smaller cog) 2 at a time.

    On the pricey side at full price but seems to always be on sale. An improvement over XT and light years ahead of SLX.

    Customer service is always fantastic. Competitive cyclist pretty much over nighted this to me and it was free shipping. The shifter it's self is really nice and we'll built. It came with new housing, a special coated wire and plenty of housing tips. Once you've installed it and properly tuned the gears the shifts are almost instant. I do really like the ability to throw 2 gears at a time on the down shift. I'm happy so far and will see how it holds up.

    I've heard a lot of different opinions on the XTR, from mushy feel to crisp and precise. I have absolutely loved my XTR drive train and jumped on the chance as soon as they went to 1 x 11 without the need for an aftermarket adjustment.

    Great if you are careful

    First ride out, I crossed up the bars, and went endo. No big deal, but the "carbon" leaver is very fragile and snapped right off. Stuff is great, but nor very robust. I was very surprised. I have never had this happen with my SRAM or even less expensive LX/XT stuff, and yep I have eaten dirt a decent bit with them. I think the weight and etc are great with XTR, but I think their durability is highly questionable.

    Shimano again stepped up when making this shifter. Smooth and precise, light weight, and comfortable. The thumb lever is dimpled, which helps in lever feel/grip, and the trigger lever is ribbed, for extra grip as well. Weight is almost minimal, and the shifter looks great. The clamp band is more narrow than before, aiding in keeping the bars looking less cluttered, but has just the right amount of clamping power. I'm sold as always, and will continue with shimano's precision.

    Spent the past weekend swapping out the 10 speed XTR/XT drive train for the 11 speed XTR/XT drive train. I replaced an XTR cassette and shifter with an XT cassette and XTR shifter, an XT derailluer with an XT derailluer and a Wipperman chain with XTR.

    Rode last night on the usual Monday ride which involves 45 minutes of grunting up a steep road climb followed by some nice DH back down.

    I shifted it a lot, just trying to get a feel for it. And to try and not bark. Here's what I found: I think the XTR 10sp shifter is nicer, it has a better feel to me and it's more ergonomic. . 11sp feels plastic. I also can't get the shifter adjusted to fit my fingers. It seems like Shimano has moved away from the thumb/trigger finger shifter to more of a thumb/thumb action, like SRAM. Once I adjusted the shifter so it was more vertical, it felt better. Not great, just better. If I'm running my hand out on the end of the bar I can hook my brake lever perfectly for one finger braking but have to really contort my writs to use the trigger finger to shift. Thumb is okay. Might try running the shifter inboard of the brake lever and see how that goes. Down shifting one gear feels okay, the effort to down shift the second gear requires more force.

    It shifter crisply, no misshifts. There was a bit of a plastic feel, like it needs to wear in. I tried my friends shifter that has more miles on it and it still had that feel though.

    Thought it was loud. I found the 11-40 cassette worked a little better than the previous 11-36 cassette, but in all honesty it's a steep uphill climb, so it's going to suck or it's going to suck.

    XTR has been the best, for a long time, and got better! 11 speeds, 1x11 is the way to be, and no better set up than the trust worthy XTR. I won't ride anything else

    This is my favorite shifter to date and I can't imagine smoother shifting.

    I came from a 1x10 with a OneUp Components 42 cog and the shifting in the middle gears wasn't great. It worked, but it wasn't crisp. When the Shimano XT 1x11 group came out, I jumped on it and bought this shifter because the XT one has the ugly meter on it. This XTR shifter works perfectly with the XT components.

    Shifting became a dream, but after using it for one month, I crashed and the thumb lever completely broke off. These things happen, but what's unfortunate is that Shimano doesn't sell replacement parts for this shifter, so if you break a part, you pretty much have to buy the shifter all over again...which is what I did. For that, I give it 4 stars.

    When Shimano first entered the fray with an 11 speed component group, XTR was there to lead the charge. I wasn't the first to rush out to get mine, but I was very pleased when I did. The XTR aesthetics are second to none, and the clean lines matched up with my carbon bars perfectly. This model has a super slim design and clamp and nests underneath the brake lever. It is important to note that this shifter doesn't have the I-Spec II compatible bolt to attach directly to the brake lever.

    After a solid day of climbing and descending, my thumbs felt less fatigued and the precision indexing made sure it was a perfect shift everytime. Even when paired with the lesser XT M8000 rear derailleur. Coming from an SLX shifter, my mind was blown with just how smooth shifting could be.

    I am a true believer now and am glad to have joined in on the 11 speed party.

    The entire M9000 group is amazing and the shifter is no exception. it is super crisp and comes with the Gucci polymer coated cable for endless smooth shifts. the double down shift is really nice for cresting those steep rollers too.
