With the advent of Shimano's XTR one-by drivetrain, a simplified, lighter crankset was finally married to the most precise, smoothest shifting mechanical rear derailleur in off-road scene. At the heart of this drivetrain is the XTR M9000 1x Chainring, which brings the same carbon-reinforced titanium construction found on Shimano's flagship double and triple groups to your one-by fantasy. Works well, but funky design

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I replaced my XT cranks with XTR race cranks to get the narrower Q-factor (sensitive knees). I was dismayed to discover after the fact that I couldn't re-use my XT rings. So, new rings. The XTR rings mount with funky cap nuts and the 34/36 sizes need spacer rings. 3 handed job. Really bad ergonomics and design for a top of the line Shimano groupo. That said I put the 34 through the paces at the High Cascade 100 and had no issues with retention or anything else. So, they get the job done, but the XT system is a lot easier to deal with if you can live with the Q factor.
