E is for E-Type.
M8000 is the first of Shimano’s Deore XT groups to adopt the new 11-speed drivetrain standard. That isn’t all that’s new for Deore XT, however. The Shimano XT FD-M8000-E 2x11 front derailleur, which is only compatible with E-Type-mount 2-speed systems, is keeping a close eye on all the new movements in mountain biking.
For its move to 11-speed compatibility, Shimano has made some important changes to its XT front derailleurs for the M8000 group. The new derailleur provides wider clearance for the new larger wheels and tires. It’s also compatible with the shorter chainstays found on many of today’s frames. Even with these changes, Shimano retains the XT front derailleur’s efficient cable routing to keep shift action light and quick.
This particular model, the M8000-E, comes with an E-type mount, which attaches to the bottom bracket flange instead of a seat tube clamp. An additional bolt anchors the derailleur in place to a braze-on clamp. There are also multiple mounting options, so if your needs change you just need a new mounting interface piece, not a new derailleur.
- Q & A
New side swing gives 1X a run for its $
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
The new Shimano side swing derailleurs shift extremely well and the set up is a piece of cake. I just installed this derailleur for someone looking for a little more gear range than a standard 11 speed drive train can provide. I have to say with how effortless the new front derailleurs shift Shimano now has a legitimate reason for sticking to their guns about the range of a 2X drive train.
Is it possible to use this front derailleur with 2x10 instead of 2x11?
Does this come with adapters to mount onto a full suspension frame? Thanks!
