Brought into the fold.

After spending its entire life in the shadows of the luminous XTR and XT drivetrains, SLX received an extensive overhaul for 2016 that raises the bar of its workhorse capabilities. Still accessible to the self-sponsored cyclist, SLX now offers 11-speed capability and sleek graphics, elevating its standards above what this mid-range groupset has previously known. As one of the key players, the SLX RD-M7000 Rear Derailleur comes with a 41-teeth capacity and the option to be setup one-by or with a double crankset, with a more streamlined design just begging to be set up on your new terrain-gobbling trail bike.

Trickle-down technology didn't just stop at 11-speed. For the first time, SLX was also granted coveted Shadow RD+ distinction, which results in greater chain stability due to the addition of the Shadow stabilizing switch. The switch limits movement of the derailleur cage, thereby lessening the likelihood of mid-ride chain drops. Over time, you'll be able to adjust the clutch tension to keep the cage in-place as normal wear-and-tear runs its course, so you don't suffer a decrease in functionality.

Shimano also improved shift quality on the RD-M7000, tweaking the derailleur's design to result in shifts that are 20% easier to initiate than before. We know — trying to gauge a 20% drop in effort when you're steering your trail bike up a succession of spiraling switchbacks is almost impossible. We'd prefer to ride assured that each gear drop on a climb and quick upshift heading into a descent will happen easier and more precisely than ever.

Does the medium cage work with the 11x46 cassette?

Caleb,

Yes as a 1x system this will work with an 11-46 cassette. if it is a 2x system then only an 11-42 cassette.

Will the slx rear derailleur work with a 1x10 system?

Hey Clark,

This derailleur will not work with a 10s setup. 10s and 11s Shimano derailleurs use different pull ratios to make sure the derailleur functions efficiently.

Solid, reliable and good looking

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Haven't had any issues with it. Works consistently and reliably on my XC bike. I chose to use XT components on my Enduro bike though.

Excellent...

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Very good value and solid performing derailleur.

I have SLXs on two different 1 X 11 drivetrains (26/ 11-42 & 30/ 11-46) and they've both worked flawlessly thru all kinds of nastiness.

Excellent...

Glad to see 11 speed in SLX

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

11 speed SLX seems to be the work horse of Shimano's 11 speed drive trains. While it may not be as light as XTR and have the super smooth shifting, it is nice to have the piece of mind when smashing through rocks that I do not have a carbon cage to worry about.

Much better then I expected

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The SLX rear derailleur's does shift cleaner than older XT products in the past. The clear advantage is Shimano's new clutch design to provide chain retention, so you can run a 1X configuration with a 11-46 cassette. If you like to get that derailleur, please let me know, and I should be able to help out.
