Shimano Dura-Ace RD-9000 11-Speed Rear Derailleur

A new pinnacle.

Shimano’s derailleurs have always been superlative, and the new Dura-Ace RD-9000 is no exception. It makes intelligent use of carbon fiber, but still relies primarily on its alloy construction to get the job done smoothly, quietly, and efficiently. Oh, and it’ll pretty much last forever, too. One of the most significant revisions in the 9000 series was a reduction in the force required to initiate a shift at the lever. Shimano had to move cable attachment points around a bit to achieve this, but it’s immediately noticeable when you shift.

Shimano’s returned to a carbon fiber cage, which helps reduce vibration in the derailleur, and ensures a perfectly smooth shift both up and down the cassette. The RD9000 is capable of handling a 28-tooth cassette, and it’ll feel the same as shifting on a corncob 11-23.

Unanswered Question

How can I confirm this Dura Ace rear derailleur will work with my 11 speed Dura Ace? Is it the number of teeth I have on the lowest cog in my rear cassette?

I would like to reiterate the unanswered question below:
Is this 9000 series rear derailleur compatible with 10speed 7900 shifters, run with a 10speed cassette?
Any takers?

Hi Paul,

The 9000 RD is not compatible with 7900 shifters/cassette because of different pull ratios.

its the best

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

DA is still my favorite grouppo and the 9000 is no exception, it just gets better. I have been on the new 9000 for the last year and it is flawless shifting. I commute and train and race and have had zero issues on the DA rear der.

Could this be used with a 10 speed 12-30 cassette or does it require a full group set upgrade? I have a tiara group set and would like to start upgrading to dura ace

Hey Don,

If you are planning to upgrade to an 11 speed set up I would recommend doing it all at once. You will need an 11 speed shifter, cassette, cassette body or hub, and chain to convert over to an 11 speed set up.
