Shimano Deore XT SL-M780 I-Spec B Shifters

Clutter reduction.

We are lucky to be riding in an age of such broad mountain bike innovation. However, all the new gadgets that make your bike so efficient on the climb and fast on the downhill have a drawback: clutter. Your handlebars are tasked with carrying much more than grips these days. Brake levers, shift levers, front and rear suspension lockout, a seat dropper release, and a GPS all eat up valuable handlebar real estate, and you’re running out. Fortunately, Shimano feels your pain. Deore XT SL-M780 I-Spec Shifters mount directly to XT or XTR brake levers, so, with the elimination of two clamps on your bars, a little bit of room just opened up.

The I-Spec shifters come with all the goodies that make the M780s so good. Arguably the best feature is Shimano’s 2-way release function, which allows you to release cable tension with either your trigger (pointer finger) or your thumb. Another nice touch is the option of shifting through several gears with just one throw of the lever. This feature works whether you’re shifting up or down.

Shifts Well

Shimano XT shifters offer excellent performance and durability. Compared to the XTR shifters they are quite close in performance but the XTR have just a little extra crispness when shifting. The XTs still operate very smoothly and provide solid shifts. The thumb lever is smooth and would be nice to have dimples in it to help give better tactile feel when shifting. Overall the XT shifters are outstanding shifters and will work hard for many years. The I-Spec helps clean up bar space and mates nicely with Shimano levers that are compatible.

Will these mount to my Shimano SLX BR-M675 brakes?

These things shift and feel great. There is a satisfying click feel with each shift. Compared to Sram shifters, the trigger to shift down the cassette is not as ergonomic, but I got used to it.

Be cautious with the ispec mounts because in order to rotate the shifters around the bar, you must also rotate the brakes as it is no longer independent. moving the shifters horizontally along the bar is independent, but you're still limited. Unless you have really extreme positions, this shouldn't be an issue. I have no problems with the limits of the adjustments, but some may, so be cautious. Also, if you want to convert these to the bar mounts, Shimano does not sell them, so you're stuck trying to find someone who will sell them to you who have converted over to ispec from their regular bar mounts.

I got these to clean up my bars and this does this perfectly.
