Shimano105 BR-5800 Brake Calipers

Stop, even faster.

Thanks to incorporating the recently adopted dual-pivot design into the 105 brakes, the Shimano 105 BR-5800 Brake Calipers have even more consistent stopping power than before. Rather than using the mounting bolt as the pivot bolt, Shimano now uses a plate with a separate center bolt to attach to the frame. In this way, the brake arms are now centered above the wheel, which means equal braking pressure to the rim when the lever is pulled. In addition to more stopping power, the new BR-5800 brake calipers also allow you to run tires in widths up to 28 millimeters.

105 = Awesome

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought these brake calipers as part of a 105 groupset to put on a spare frame I had laying around. I decided to go with 105 because the 105 has had a history of being Shimano's workhorse group and this 11 speed group is priced great, which leaves money for wheels or cockpit parts. Every component within the group got a good upgrade and resembles features found on the higher priced 11 speed Dura-Ace and Ultegra groups. The 105 groupset also allows for a pretty easy gear configuration if you're interested too (11/32 cassette, long cage rear derailleur & a 50/34 crank). If you're on a budget or want a group for a training bike, the 105 11-speed group is no-brainer option.

Great modulation and great power

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I really love the Shimano brakes and they work as well as the Ultegra or Dura Ace brakes. They're slightly heavier but that's not a problem for me.
