With freeride style and high-alpine capabilities, the Scott Couloir 2 Helmet will stay snug on your head all year long. Scott designed the Couloir 2 to be a dual-standard helmet, meaning it's suitable for ripping pow in the winter and climbing skyscraping mountains in the summer.

Scott utilized Casidion protection technology with this helmet in order to increase protection while reducing weight. Casidion technology decreases bulk and keeps the helmet low-profile, and is designed to take on up to seven impacts per second. The Passive Venting and Coolmax Moisture Management systems work in harmony to keep your head cool during spring skiing pursuits and times of high-output, and the headlamp fixation comes in handy during alpine starts and evening pow laps.

  • A freeride-inspired helmet for skiing and mountaineering
  • In-mold construction is lightweight yet super tough
  • Casidion technology helps protect against multiple impacts
  • Coolmax Moisture Management System keeps your head dry
  • Passive Venting System dumps heat quickly
  • Headlamp compatibility comes in handy for alpine starts

Good at first, then disappointing

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

It really feels like it could be a perfect compromise for ski-touring. Proper shell, compact and lightweight.
However the quality and design quickly show its shortcomings, mainly the size adjustment.
First of all you need to decide to use it either with or without liner/thick hat as the adjustment won't cover both. The sizing chart is also a bit optimistic.

More importantly the adjustment is simply not reliable. It can easily loosen up by itself, it breaks and gets fully loose if you tighten it too far (goes very easily). Quick look inside shows how tiny and delicate the parts are. Mine seem to had lost one tooth already. I doubt it will hold the shell in place during any major hit, it will simply lift up and uncover the head.

Lastly, the ventilation is rather limited, especially the front could push more air into the googles. Also note that the weight is given without the liner.

On top of that I cannot say that the manufacturer felt any interested in those facts so I wouldn't expect it will improve.
To sum up, try it on, choose the smaller of the sizes, be more careful than with the lightest climbing helmets and don't count on Scott customer service.

Light, protective, breathable

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Love taking this helmet on long days - you barely even notice it's on your head when taking the skin track back up for lap 5. About the same weight as a climbing helmet, but has better side protection for both rock fall and yard sales.

Ideal helmet for big missions

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This helmet fits perfectly and feels like you aren't wearing anything when you have it on. It is incredibly light weight and comfortable. I use this for big ski days where cutting every unnecessary ounce is important. I also use this helmet for alpine climbs and ice climbing.

Ski mountaineering dream helmet

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This helmet was built for spring ski mountaineering trips. The helmet weighs a bit over a half of pound and has removable ear flaps for when it gets warm and you want full ventilation. This helmet will keep air flowing all around your head as that sun beats down on you and keep you safe from anything falling above you in a couloir. Amazing simple yet beefy helmet that will keep you safe exploring the far reaches of the mountains!
