Highly recommended for intended purpose

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 45 1/2

Burly, indeed. Very well-designed/made boot, Fits like the proverbial glove. Choice materials and craftsmanship throughout. A Scarpa at its best.

Great boot for loaded hiking. Don't buy this shoe just to brag on your bike path strolls!

The lacing system works very well, but a little mysterious at the outset.

Recommend 1/2 size up if you're an EE width; typical for Scarpa fitting. This is a VERY tailored fit, so your arch/volume are going to matter with this boot more than some flabby slab hiker. If it fits your foot and needs, jeez, it's a great piece of footwear.

Slightly heavier than the Kailash, but definitely more stout and tuned. Love the outsole here; nice and buoyant, but totally controlled. This is a boot that will make you want to check-out of suburbia - on foot, no less.

Super nice boot! Zanskar GTX

About 15 mi of what i consider break in. Most of my hiking is hunting related, therefore off trail. I have been wearing keen targhee, rocky lynx, wolverine somethin or another, tall carhartt logger, and none compare to the Zanskar. Been mostly wet conditions so far with snow melt so some drifts are still deep and plenty of mud and puddles. Been very waterproof and grippy for me. 11 2/3 size feels true to my never over sometimes under 12 shoe size. Pretty tough exterior, mine are the leather so we'll see how it holds up in the rocks. Slim shape is great for bushwacking with no hangups on sticks and brush. I love them with a weighted pack. These are my favorite features so far. Most hunting style boots are bulky outsole, mushy insole, soft/ foam outsole (sorry k**n bad idea) and generally more like moon boots compared to these. Very confidence inspiring outsole while walking uneven terrain. The laces actually could be nearly my favorite feature.. let's just say they are by far the best lace system I've used. Feel very light and yet ultra rugged with no sharp points reaching my sometimes tender foot this time of year. They feel a little short for me but I'm OK with it for heat when summer backpacking comes along. Allow time to let foot adjust/break in before you hit the long trail. Or you will be sore as these are a fairly stiff boot compared to all other day hiker type boots. Do not get these if you intend to walk the bike path through the park on day hikes. Get these if you are packing weight on rugged terrain. Furthermore as this gets asked alot...how about wide feet? I don't have wide feet but I think a wide foot would be pinched through the middle where this boot is somewhat narrow there. The toe box is nice for me. Just enough wiggle but not sliding around...roomier than they look I'd say. That said the exterior toe is awesome for poking into tight spots. Reminds me of my ascent shoe that way and i wish more hunting boots were built this way. Save your moon boots for the club!

4 star since I haven't seen the test of time.

Comfortable, Grippy, and Tough

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought the Zanskars after a terrible experience with Salomon 4D GTXs on the Pemi Loop in NH. I've used the Scarpas in a wide variety of conditions, from mid-Atlantic winter trails to the jungles of Colombia. Amazing grip on everything from wet rock to deep mud, loose scree to snow and ice. They're as good downhill as going up, they provide support while being remarkable nimble for a boot this stiff, and they do a great job protecting the soles of your feet over rough terrain. Amazingly, despite the nubuck and Goretex, my feet never overheated, even on a multiday trek in 90+F and 80+ humidity conditions. While objectively they're not that light, they wear like a lighter boot - even after 6-7 hours of hiking with long uphill sections, I never get the feeling they're weighing me down. A great fit for my narrow heels and wide forefeet, Backcountry should start selling these again - they deliver where other widely praised boots don't measure up.

I also dumped my 4D for a pair of these and there is no comparison.
We all love these boots for rough terrain or just straight ahead trail.
This boot is lighter than the Lowa Cevedale but is on that level of quality and similar construction and performance.

Unanswered Question

I'm debating between these boots and the Scarpa SL Active boot. I'm looking for a boot for 3 - 7 day backpacking trips, carrying a weight of 30 - 42 pounds, and that handles wet conditions and scrambling quite well. Which boot would you recomend? What are the major differences between the two?

High quality burly boot

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size

I had to return this boot because it didn't fit my skinny low volume foot well and didn't quite meet my needs, but I was impressed with it. The quality is very high, and the lacing system is superb. The volume was just too high for me, higher than some other Scarpa boots I have had in the past. The midsole/shank is quite stiff but has a lot of rocker which makes it walk well. Although the weight is low, this is definitely a solid boot for carrying heavy loads - not a flexy day hiker.
