the best, stiff, awesome tele boot

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Was trying to pick between the T-Pro and T-Comp for a telemark boot. I'm 180, 6'3" and like a stiffer boot. The T-Comp is just amazing. Use it on a resort telemark setup. Heard the T-Pro is better if you send most of your time going up.

Fun fun!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I switched to the NTN a few years ago, and I think that the binding/boot system is the most innovative gear-related development within the world of telemark skiing during my lifetime.
Most of the reviews that I read before switching away from 75mm equipment focused on the NTN's stiff, burly feel. And, while the NTN is definitely stiffer than most telemark bindings, the springs are not remarkably harder to compress than BD's '€˜midstiff'€™ cartridge, or the #3 setting on the AXL/Vice. I think that the NTN feels stiffer than its competitors because the interface between the underfoot power tube, and the boot'€™s bellows is more efficient than any of the 'duckbill'™ setups I've skied on. When I initiate a turn, the NTN engages immediately, and transfers power from the boot/binding to the ski throughout the turn -€“ whereas many 75 mm boot/binding combinations tend to engage slowly, and allow some sloppiness in transitioning between turns.
The Freeride doesn'€™t tour remarkably well, but, if you'€™re willing to lug the extra weight around, it is a whole lot of fun on the decent. If you're hyped on things that are '˜lightweight,'€™ check out the Freedom, Scarpa's touring version of the NTN system.

Fun fun!

How does the stiffness of this boot and the TX Pro line up compared to the T-Race and T1?

Hi Aaron, The TX Comp is going to be on par with the T Race, about a 130 flex. The TX Pro is more in line with the T1, about a 120 flex. If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly and I'll get you taken care of. - Matthew Pizza - Expert Gearhead

THE NTN boot

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have long been a die hard fan of the 75mm but advancements in bindings have made me reconsider. This boot...its the one. It is stiff but comfortable and can handle anything you throw at it. Hiking/scrambling in this boot is much easier than the t-race since it does not have the duckbill. The walk mode, while not a lot of range of motion, is bomber and has never failed on me. The power strap is a huge upgrade from the models of the past. Easy to grab with gloves on and it is much stiffer and really locks the boot in. The buckles are also a nice upgrade, lighter and stronger all at the same time. Haven't broken one and I am in and out of rocks frequently.
