A lightweight and packable approach shoe.

Weighing just over nine ounces and featuring a light, collapsible design, the Scarpa Iguana Men's Approach Shoe can be stuffed in your climbing pack or clipped to a harness once you reach your route. A polyester mesh upper puts an emphasis on breathability, making this shoe a solid choice for hot desert approaches and mostly dry climbs in the foothills. To-the-toe lacing ensure a secure and responsive fit during more technical approaches, while a cushy EVA midsole makes the Iguana a welcome reprieve from your super-tight climbing shoes when you're on belay.

Great shoe, bad foot-bed

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

My husband bought these: He says: Bought these to primarily be a hiking shoe that will be good on rocky scrambles. Have done a few 7 mile hikes in them, did a 3 mile trail run in them. Very sturdy, grippy shoes. Low profile = low ankle support. Would be 5* but the foot-bed that comes in them is very flimsy/almost completely flat. I have pretty standard arches, put an old running shoe insert that I wasn't using in them and they feel MUCH better.

Awesome Approacher!

I am loving this shoe. It’s lightweight, comfortable, and breathable, and it sticks to everything (in a good way). The lacing system really allows me to dial in the fit with my wide feet, and lets me adjust for a more comfortable fit for hiking or tighten up the toe box once things get technical. I wear a size 9 Street shoe, and I got these in a 41.5, same as the rest of Scarpa’s approach shoes.

Awesome all around shoe

Great for easy alpine routes, scrambling and hiking. These are a lightweight shoe that will clip onto your harness easy but they will go the distance. Have done the Grand Teton, Longs Peak North Face, all the Flatirons and many long alpine approaches with these shoes. They are killer.

Lightweight but Awesome

These are incredible shoes - easy to pack, put back on between climbs, scrambling, high ball boulder problems, long approaches, etc. They are comfortable, breathable, and surprisingly sturdy. The only thing they aren't is waterproof, but that's OK. They perform exceptionally well in every other aspect. Very versatile. Sized mine to street shoes and I think I could possibly gone half a size down in length - width seems a little narrow but not uncomfortably tight and I have slightly wider feet.

I have swapped out my heavier hiking boots for these when I'm headed to the crag and I haven't looked back. Bonus points for all the compliments and comments I get for how cool they look. What's better, they are holding up well even after a few miles of heavy use to break them in.

Lightweight and Grippy!

These are my first pair of approach shoes. I wasn't sure of the difference between these and normal tennies. Wow do these make a difference when on rocks! I went to Sedona a couple weekends ago and was hiking and scrambling multiple days. not only are these shoes super comfortable and lightweight, they have amazing grip! I was able to walk up and down pretty steep slick rocks without slipping once! I would definitely recommend these to anyone looking for a good scrambling/hiking shoe!

Breathable and customizable

I have a fat foot, especially in my toes. The laces on these shoes go way further down and allow you to open up the shoe and really dial in your fit. The heel pocket keeps my foot locked in but the laces allow my feet to actually survive a big day hiking. I also have really hot feet and these shoes are extremely breathable. The sole isn't overly thick but does still give great sensitivity.

Burly for the grandest approaches.

You'd think the light and compact Scarpa Men's Iguana Approach Shoe would only be appropriate for smaller approaches, but my first approach with it was up the Grand Teton, and it was a complete success. I loved how light and breathable it felt throughout the hike, and the midsole was just cushy enough to make sure my feet didn't get too uncomfortable on the 21 hour adventure. Vibram's sole was super sweat, from the trail to 5.4 climbs. I never slipped once, and there's enough edge to handle technical terrain without a problem.
