Freedom SL Alpine Touring Boot

What's the use in schlepping your backcountry setup to the top of gnarly chutes and untouched pillow lines if your boot can't hang on the descent? The Scarpa Freedom SL Alpine Touring Boot carries to your throne as King of the Mountain while balancing weight and hard-charging performance. The burly 120 flex index and four-buckle design offer a more aggressive ride than the standard Freedom, but the SL is almost a pound lighter thanks to the stiff, light Pebax Rnew shell with Advanced Injection Technology. The boot features a Ride Power Block walk mode that delivers 27 degrees of frictionless range of motion for efficient climbing and easily locks back into ski mode for rippin' power transmission on the downhill.

Long gone are the days when you had to cram your tootsies into torturous race-style boots to get the performance you need. The 101mm anatomic last provides a precise and sensitive fit for medium width feet, while the heat-moldable Intuition Speed Ride liners wrap your feet in buttery comfort usually reserved for footwear other than ski boots. The Freedom SL slips effortlessly into all AT and tech (TLT) bindings with the rugged, lugged Vibram Mountain Plus sole, but for skiers who occasionally catch a bad case of ride-the-chairlift-itis, you can swap for the Vibram Mountain Piste sole (sold separately) and click into alpine bindings. Look, the Freedom SLs know you'll be spending most of your time on backcountry adventures and grinding in the skintrack, but chairlifts happen to the best of us from time to time. These boots won't judge.

  • A burly touring boot that balances weight and stiffness
  • 120 flex rating handles aggressive terrain with ease
  • Feathery light yet bombproof Pebax Rnew shell
  • Friendly for medium-width feet with a 101mm last
  • Vibram Mountain Plus soles for AT and tech bindings
  • Walk mode offers 27 degrees of cuff rotation
  • Performance-oriented four buckle design with power strap
  • Heat-moldable Intuition Cross Fit Speed Ride liners

My second pair!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I like this boot so much I got me a second pair after I abused the first one for 3 seasons. These are not the lightest of the bunch, but they are also not cold boots with thin liners. I ski 100+ days a year so the liners got hammered and needed a second liner. I took it from the Freedom RS (Yes I have that boot). I feel that liner is better than the one in the SL. I keep skiing with it in the new boot too.

I like the PBAX shell! Never an issue for getting in or out of the boots regardless of the temperature!

The range of motion hasn't been a show stopper for me. They flex just fine. If you are a skimo bro, maybe this is not your boot, but if you want a good downhill performance and great touring boot in one this will do!

I got the alpine soles so I can ski straight up alpine bindings, but I find them wearing off too fast and my boots felt to flimsy in the alpine setup. I'd stick to pin bindings with those boots.

In terms of fit and comfort, those work for my feet. That's something you'd have to work out for yourself as the shell and the last might not be your taste!

Great boot!

My second pair!

Excellent boot

These perform exceedingly well in all conditions. They function like a solid alpine boot on resort, but are incredibly light and have a great tour mode for backcountry days. Impressively designed on all fronts.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Don't waste your time with weak alpine touring boots. These boots make the backcountry a blast, and I used them as my resort boots too for a while. Dropping cliffs or cornices or even a few park laps I've loved these boots every second. On top of it all these boots actually are not heavy. I've used them for mountaineering, in snowshoes, looooong tours and loooooong bootpacks, they hand everything like a champ.
