Move quickly through the mountains.

Whether you're in it to win it or busting out big days in the alpine, Scarpa's new Alien RS Alpine Touring Boot blends the speed and efficiency you'd want out of a race boot with a broader backcountry application. The carbon-infused Grilamid shell is ultralight, yet incredibly tough, and features a heat-moldable Intuition liner, because you better have your fit dialed when you're shattering records or crushing multiple peaks in a day.

Unlike most featherlight race boots, the Alien RS still holds its own on the downhill. That's not to say that these are the kicks you want when you're surfing spines or charging through the steep and deep, but thanks to the 3D Lambda Torsion Frame that delivers solid boot-to-ski power transmission, you'll feel stable and confident enough to rip that gnarly coulie you just sprinted up. The 72-degree range of motion in walk mode lets you fly up the skinner like someone lit a fire under your ass, and the Boa closure system offers a snug and secure fit. The zippered, waterproof gaiter seals out snow while you're setting a bootpack through cruddy slush, and Vibram soles give you the traction you need to keep a cool head while you're traversing icy ridges or scrambling over scree fields.

  • Lightweight skimo boot for racing or big missions
  • Carbon-infused Grilamid shell is ultralight yet durable
  • 95 flex offers solid performance during the descent
  • 99mm balances comfort with performance
  • Heat-moldable Intuition liner offers a custom fit
  • 72-degree range of motion in walk mode maximizes uphill efficiency
  • Waterproof gaiter seals out snow
  • Vibram rubber soles offer traction on icy traverses

Alien RS

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

After the first month of skiing the Alien RS, paired with the Black Crows Evo 85mm underfoot ski and ATK Evo binding (now re-branded and sold by Black Diamond), I am very impressed. I've skied them 2 days inbounds, 8-days backcountry. One day of the backcountry skiing included a little 5th class climbing. Three days included extensive crampon use (CAMP Race with Dyneema strap).

Other boots I currently use regularly: Alien 1.0, Dynafit TLT-5 Performance, Dynafit TLT-6 Performance. I wear mondo 30 in all.

The Alien RS fits me very well and feels just a little longer than my same sized Alien 1.0. (Had to punch one toe in Alien 1.0.) I have punched all other of my boots, except the TLT-6, in the lateral metatarsal area. I will not need to punch the Alien RS. I have not thermofit the liners and see no need to do so. The first day I wore them, I felt a hot spot mid-lateral foot where there's a seam in the liner--went away after the first day of resort skiing.

Performance of the Alien RS is superb, on par with my experience with Dynafit TLT series, but with less mass. It walks well, holds well on rock, kicks steps when setting a booter, and of course skis well. Range of motion for skinning and walking is smooth and as unhindered as the Alien 1.0.

Comfort is most similar to my TLT-5, which has an aftermarket Intuition liner with similar thickness to the stock Performance TLT-5 liner, but with a slightly more progressive flex. The Alien RS BOA system is more comfortable and secure than in the 1.0. I've only been skiing in pleasant Spring weather, so no evaluations of their warmth. I expect them to be at least as warm as the TLT-5, which has a reputation of being cold, but is not my experience.

Design comments...the cuff system is a huge improvement over the Alien 1.0. I expect the cord system in the cuff to be more durable than the cuff fastener in the 1.0. The BOA system cable is not obviously accessible and appears that it will be much more difficult to replace than the BOA on the 1.0. Donning CAMP Race crampons feels more secure in the heal area on the RS compared to the 1.0...no issues keeping the crampons on.

I'm really surprised by the other review "Broke Immediately--No Warranty". I'd like to see Backcountry take care of the warranty and respond with their perspective to the review.

BROKE IMMEDIATELY! - NO WARRANTY

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These boots were amazing for three days until the left cuff broke right above the ankle pivot. Scarpa said I “Overflexed” the boot and denied my warranty. Total BS. After a few more days racing SkiMo, the other one broke in the same spot. Such BS.

The boots were amazing and I want to use them more, but they both broke after minimal use, which just proves they do not hold up, even to normal use. I can’e imagine how people take these things into steep terrain. I’m only 150lbs, but they would have snapped in half going big.

Pretty pissed at Scarpa and I DO NOT RECOMMEND unless youre under 100lbs and only ski uphill, in which case they would be amazing.

BROKE IMMEDIATELY! - NO WARRANTY

Our ticket to freedom.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Hands down this boot blows me away. Walks like a race boot and skis better than the F1 for me! The ease of making laps and still being able to charge on the descents is a gift. I'm not kidding this is my experiance and I love what I can do with these boots. I got mine in the fall 2017. From 7,000' to 12,000' touring days in Colorado, steep lines in Chamonix, tram riding and powder lines from the Aiguille Du Midi and lines in the Alaska Range. I have about 200+ days of getting after it on these boots. They have a tall cuff and performance fit. Best boot ever for the ski mountaineer that get's a lot done out there.

Our ticket to freedom.

Hey Teague - Thanks for the review. Any thoughts on sizing in general and in regards to warmth for those longer trips/colder days?
