Love them BUT...

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 13

They run small and are not great approach shoes, or at least are bad approach shoes if sized normally. I got a pair of 13s that fit similar to my goto non-alpine approach shoes (La Sportiva TX3s). Climbing they are awesome. Nice sticky sole for rock and great stiffness for crampons and/or kicking steps. I won't use them again for the hike in or out, will likely buy a size up in the future because they are so tight they gave me blisters.

Recommend buying a size up at least. They are also a bit cool if you plan on anything but spring conditions; they may require an insulated overboot for winter.

Agreement

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 11 and 11.5

I am in agreement with the other review posted for this boot. In regard to sizing, I would add, that if your feet are quite narrow a half size up to accommodate length will probably be sufficient. However, if your feet are wide or of normal width, a full size up is the correct move. The 10.5 size I always use in Salomon footwear was impossibly tight in length and width. I exchanged them for size 11 which was ok in length but tight in width. After a few rounds with boot stretchers in the the toe area they became very comfortable. The next pair I purchased were 11.5, and they were good right out of the box.

Regarding performance, these boots are the bomb, for anything from rough trails to very demanding terrain.

Narrower - so order 1 size bigger

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 12

I now own both the original Black and White Carbon 1 model and the Carbon 2. The Carbon 2's are definitely narrower and I had to buy ONE size bigger than my normal shoe size to get a proper fit. (The Carbon 1's required only a 1/2 size bigger.)

As far as improvements, the thicker tongue make them feel more comfortable. The lacing has an extra loop so that one can distribute the tension better throughout your foot. The new side closure with a snap seems better than the older system - and they just look better! The sole seems identical to the previous model, and the Ortholite insoles are also the same.

Finally, they seem a little stiffer up front, sturdier, and maybe a tad lighter. The Petzl Leopard crampons fit perfectly at their max elongation for my size 12 boots, so I now have a very light bundle for any mountain in the lower 48.

Definitely a great product, like the Carbon 1. Just make sure you order up in size.

Leo, any bit of info helps everybody - thanks for the thorough review!

Unanswered Question

I'm looking for a new mountaineering boot for semi-technical ascents. I'm curious if these would be adequate for a route like the Kautz on Rainer where one might encounter up to 2 pitches of 40-50 degree glacier ice (worst case). I know they only support strap on crampons, so I am more curious about the stiffness of the sole.
