Outline GTX Hiking Shoe

Hike from peak to peak, or just from the car to camp in the Outline GTX Hiking Shoe. Salomon designed the shoe to feel as though you're wearing a lightweight running shoe, but with the traction and protection of a hiking boot. A Gore-Tex Comfort membrane shields your feet from water when hiking crossing a creek or getting rained out in an isolated storm, while the Contragrip sole provides you with the traction you need on any trail.

  • A multipurpose hiking shoe for exploring wild places
  • Gore-Tex Comfort membrane blocks out water when isolated storms hit
  • Contragrip sole provides traction in soft dirt or hard packed clay
  • Synthetic upper creates a lightweight and durable construction

My Outlines - Pair #2

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 11

While initially purchased as a lightweight travel shoe, I've moved into using my Outlines for all of my day-hike activities. Not only does it do everything I want in a hiking shoe (phenomenal fit, fantastic grip), I don't feel the need to remove it once I'm done with a hike. I can go about my day without ever changing my shoes! They are so light-weight I forget I have them on, and yet they are never lacking on a 10-12 mile day-hike! Amazing compliment to my X-Ultra boots.

Amazing shoes

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Size Bought: 12

I’ve used these on many local hikes and so far they are amazing. I cannot wait to use them on my thru hike, I know they will do more than ever want. I can submerge them in water crossings and they will dry in a lunch break. The grip is also better than I ever imagined. Highly recommend.

Good hiking shoe - narrow sole

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 10

Light weight and great all around shoe. Narrow sole, which isn't a problem for me but may be for others.

Summer chill

    Perfect winter travel shoe!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: US11.5

Just returned from 4 weeks ski/travel in Japan and wore these shoes every day. So happy with them! Perfect for everything from torrential rain on Tokyo streets to kicking around the bars at night on snow covered streets in Hakuba. Comfortable enough to walk all day, often carrying my 6YO daughter on my shoulders.
Salomon do fit slightly narrow so I was a bit concerned (my feet are not typically "narrow") but after the first 15 minutes wearing them they felt like slippers.
Also worth noting the sizes fit small. I am a 44.5 EU, US 11 street shoe and in this shoe I bought a US11.5/UK11 and they were perfect.
Great traction on all sorts of loose surfaces (snow, gravel, mud, street paving etc). A little slippery on hard surfaces (like some paving in cities).
Overall I Iove these shoes! Buying shoes online can be a risk but on this occasion I got it spot on.

    City to trail no problem

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I have gone on a few trips this summer where packing space was limited, I knew I was going to be spending some time in and out of store and restaurants in the city and up and down trails in the mountains. These were the perfect "one shoe fits all" solution. I have put in 14 mile days with these no problem, the contagrip is excellent. Usually, I worry GTX will make my feet too warm and uncomfortable, not the case with these. They breathe great while remaining waterproof!

Fits true to typically salomon sizing.

    Solid Hiking Shoe

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 10.5

If you want a Hiking shoe and not a "trail Runner" you have found the solution with the outline GTX shoe. I have bought a half size up as i do with all of y hiking boots to accommodate any foot swelling and have some additional room if need for a warmer sock. The shoe itself is very breathable and i did not feel overheated during my hikes in the Wasatch up to Alta ski resort and Brighton to the many lakes available with mellow incline and not needing a foot hiking boot. Mostly dry conditions and a few streams to cross makes having a GTX shoe very helpful in staying dry on these day hikes.

I have a high arch and can still fit into this shoe just fine but if you have a wider foot maybe another shoe would be better as they are not "narrow" but not wide either. If you are just looking for something to use on a mellow trail and want traction and don;t want to get your feet wet on grass or anything like that these would be a solid choice. If you work at a golf course or an area that might be damp you will be very stoked on these.

    Beefed up Trail Runner

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. I've used Salomon's trail running shoes for a few years now and have come to expect excellent fit and quality. Like their trail running shoes, the Salomon Outline GTX fit very well right out of the box and held up nicely. For a hiking shoe, this guy is lightweight. The upper is like that of a running shoe, with perhaps a bit more support, a nice Gore-Tex liner, and toe protection. This pairs nicely with the supportive and aggressive sole.

Over the past month I've used these shoes for hiking, mountain biking, short trail running, and even while building a tiny house. It has performed flawlessly, with a few small gripes. When carrying a pack long distances over technical trail, the Outline GTX is not quite supportive enough to leave your feet unfatigued. It is more well-suited for shorter hikes, jogs, or even bike-packing. I think the lace system used on Salomon's running shoes would've worked well on this shoe as well. In addition, the tread, while providing excellent traction in all conditions, picked up mud like crazy. This here is a pretty good-looking almost perfect hiking shoe.

Hike the summit or the city

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

This shoe really does a great job blending your passions with your everyday life. You have the comfort and style of an everyday wear, with the traction of your favorite hiking boot. I had a really great time taking these up on the trails in Big Cottonwood Canyon then enjoying the night down in Salt Lake City with friends. The only reason I didn't go 5 stars is i'm not a very flashy guy when it comes to footwear so the bright green (of the Non GTX outline) isn't my favorite, but not a deal breaker. I love the colors of the GTX style, and a GTX shoe is great if you have dogs because you're going to wash them of at some point (dog poo).

The one shoe you need for a weekend trip

If you have to bring one shoe on a weekend trip where you'll be hiking and hitting the town, this is the shoe for you. As a Salomon employee, I was looking forward to trying out this shoe and was excited when they came in right before a weekend trip to the Tetons. Putting 25 miles in over two days, I had no issues. They're lightweight, breathable, and perfect for wearing straight from the trail to dinner in Jackson.

      I'd recommend going down a 1/2 size, i'm normally a 7.5 and wear a 7 in these.

      comfy and light

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: 8.5

Wore for a demo on a 2ish mile hike, they initially felt too narrow. But they broke in nicely and were very comfortable and light. I normally wear a 9, but a 8.5 actually fit me better than the 9

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 9.5

My wife and I are active hikers in the Wasatch, and the first “out of the box” hike we used them on was game changing. They are extremely light, breathable, and have a confidence inspiring tread. The versatility of the Outline is what separates itself from other shoes in this category. It is tough enough for 5-10 mile hikes, and casual/stylish for meeting up with your friends for a drink after the trail. Form and function!

      Great fit!

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 7.5

This shoe fit like a glove and was very comfortable on my first hike with it! It was sturdy, supportive, and grippy enough to made the hike a breeze.

Comfortable shoe. Light weight for a trail running show, with good traction and support for hiking. Fit to well, with enough room in the toe box, and good comfortable support throughout.
