High Quality, High Volume
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. I have been trail running and hiking for 15 years, having had over 5 pairs of Salomon?s previously. Typically, I find their shoes and boots high quality, rugged and durable with mixed results on sizing and fit. Before using this pair Salomon Cross Hike GTX?s for hiking, I was using a pair of Salomon Speed Cross. While I love the weight and agility of the Speed Cross, I was looking for a shoes that was bit less tapered for more all day comfort, waterproof and more appropriate for colder, winter use and casual hiking, where I am looking for a little ?more? than a thin/light trail runner. On paper, the Cross Hike was exactly what I was looking for. It?s waterproof, stable, has a more versatile rugged sole and is a very solid, durable shoe. In hand, they feel like they?ll last a decade. And for the fit: I wear a US men?s 11 in almost all my running/technical shoes. (Salomon, New Balance, Nike, Asics, etc.) While these Cross Hike?s are the right length in a size 11, the overall width and volume of the shoes is very large. My feet are a pretty normal volume, but in these shoes I need to use super thick winter socks to get anywhere close to the right fit without resorting to cinching down the speed laces painfully tight. Even with thick socks, I have more heel movement than I would like. If you have wide, high volume feet, these might be great for you. Otherwise, you?ll likely be better served in other shoes.
