Salewa Ortles Hybrid 2 Jacket Review

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion.

The Salewa Ortles Hybrid 2 Jacket is a great jacket for aerobic activity in colder conditions, like skinning up in the morning when you need something that keeps you warm but not too warm and can be regulated by not having too much under. I have used it for skinning and skiing in the backcountry, for rugged hikes on cool, windy days, quick walk with the dog, etc. I have the Salewa Ortles Hybrid 2 Jacket in the Red Onion Color which I really like and the orange lining and zippers adds a “cool” addition to the jacket.

The stretch inserts are elastic, soft and wind resistant just like the specifications indicate and it provides the jacket with a good alethic fit while moving. I always like to have a hood because it adds warmth if you get cold and the shape of the hood can go under my climbing helmet. I found the chest pocket perfect for my phone so I could easily take pictures while I was out there and have a few other useful things in my pockets as well!

I have been debating if I would be better off with Salewa Ortles Hybrid 2 Jacket or a warmer jacket as a layer when I ski in the backcountry and I think this jacket will be a good layer for warmer days but I still want a warmer down jacket as a layer when it is really cold. It also seems like it would be a great layer for a long multi-pitch climb on a cooler day.

The jacket is supposed to have an athletic fit that moves with you while still allowing you to layer but I wish it was a bit larger and that I had a little bit more room to add a layer under as needed without feeling like it is getting too tight. I am 5.7” and weigh 145 lbs and I have a size large. The manufacture does not provide an XL. To provide perspective, I am in between a medium and a large woman size in Patagonia Down Sweaters and some other brands.

Thanks for the detailed review! And what an inspirational photo! That's a lot of work! I'm stoked you still found some snow, this time of year. I think you need to do the Ortles skitour in Italy, now!

Backcountry gave me this product, but this review is my personal opinion. The Salewa Ortles Hybrid 2 Insulated Jacket is a great all-around lightweight insulated jacket for cold weather aerobic activities. I have used this jacket for several weeks for fat biking, skiing, snow shoeing and around-town errands. This jacket it is quickly becoming one of my favorites. The insulation is perfectly placed over the core and shoulders and in the hood for warmth, while the stretchy side panels allow for full range of motion. The hood has an elastic draw cord that keeps the edges of the hood out of my field of vision, which is rare for most hoods, but it doesn'€™t fit over a helmet. The zippers are easy to use with gloved hands. There are four well-placed pockets:€“ one internal chest pocket, one external chest pocket and two front waist pockets. Although not adjustable, the elastic cuffs are comfortable and allow access to my large-faced mountaineering watch. This jacket is lightweight and almost fits into its internal chest pocket. I am 5'3"€ and 125 pounds and the small fits comfortably. I have the Red Onion€ and I like the color, but I don'€™t like the red contrasting zippers. I highly recommend the Salewa Ortles Hybrid 2 Insulated Jacket as a multi-use insulating layer.

Salewa has done a brilliant job making a super functional, flattering, and warm jacket. Couldn't gush more about the style, fit, stretch, or functionality of this jacket. Keeps you warm, easy to layer, easy to use -zippers are well designed and incorporated, performs in every way you could ever for! I ordered a small which gives me some room to layer without being too oversized.

    My All Time Favorite Jacket

The Salewa Ortles Hybrid 2 Jacket continues to surprise me with it's awesomeness. Salewa has definitely taken the time to nail not only the technical but the women's specific styling and fit. I have used this jacket for everything for hiking, biking, running, and even as a casual jacket to work etc. The Hybrid features make it super versatile for high output activities in cold weather with insulation focused in the core, its easy to add a layer when it gets really cold and the stretch is unrivaled. I love the black as the zips are all navy (my fav combo) and the pulls are all a pop red/pink. Cannot recommend enough.
