Surprisingly versatile. A steal on sale

I bought a Patagonia R1 Hoodie in maybe 2017 and it was too warm, even with just one base layer and in 42F temps when pulling weighted packs uphill. I ended up giving it away because I just never wore it. On a whim I bought this piece which seemed so lightweight that it maybe would not be useful, but I had to "trust the data" for warmth/weight compared to the R1, and was hoping it would fill the need I had envisioned for the R1. Surprisingly this piece is my perfect midlayer in maybe 5-35F. Depending on wind and exertion I will wear it on the outside with a super thin baselayer from 25-45F comfortably (low/no wind). I can wear this only from the low 40s to maybe 60F. When I wash it and hang it, it's dry shockingly fast, like 10-20 minutes. It's that piece that doesn't knock your socks off when you're trying to figure out your system, but it "just works" really well in a variety of situations. For quick drying, I want things as tight as possible without being uncomfortable. I'm 5' 9.5", 191 lbs, 43" chest, and I wear Medium in this (very athletic fit, but functions really well).

Bought this as an additional base layer for an upcoming Kilimanjaro expedition. Have been wearing it in the northeast in some very cold temp and it is WARM.

Almost Perfect: Sizing Needs Improvement

This is exactly the fleece I've been searching for in terms of weight/warmth and performance, but the fit is on the smaller size and could be improved in my opinion (more on that below). The pros: It's low weight, stretchy, and slim fitting with just the right amount of warmth to use as a mid layer for high output activities where you just need to stay warm enough while in motion on cold/cooler days (in my case, so far, it's worked well for hiking, snowshoeing, and winter fat biking, but not bouldering or climbing - more on why below). This is not a mid or heavy-weight stand-a-lone fleece that will keep you warm in cold temps, and that's not what it's designed for. It's meant to be used as a layer among other layers (e.g., worn over a lightweight wicking base layer along with a protective outer layer or shell, depending on conditions) or worn as a stand-alone fleece with a base layer in cool but not cold temps. The cons: The sizing, and specifically, the length, could be improved. For reference, I'm 6'2", 40" chest, 31 waist, 185lbs, with an above average torso length (25") and longer than average arms (33" sleeves work best), so not the typical dimensions found in most men's sizing conventions. According to the sizing chart, I should be a medium with room to spare but I'm glad I heeded the advice of other reviews and purchased the large, which fits well except for the length, which is too short for bouldering/climbing or any activity where you need to raise your arms above your head. When I raise my hands above my head, the fleece isn't quite long enough to keep my waist covered and raises up about 2 inches above my waistline. For me, this is only really an issue when bouldering or climbing, but something to be aware of if you're also in the longer than normal torso camp. After checking Rab's website, I found that the center back length for the size large is 28 inches (not the 32 inches listed on Backcountry's size chart) so that's my only issue with the sizing. If Rab increased the length to even 30 inches it would be a functional improvement making the fleece more versatile and more appealing to people that don't fit within typical sizing conventions.

Versatile and Surprisingly Warm

I wear my Nexus probably 4+ times a week with a t-shirt, tech-t, wool base layer, you name it. It's incredibly warm for its weight and looks super sharp -- it is a snug, "athletic" fit, if you will. I most regularly climb outside in upper 30's - low 50's weather with it, but I've run in much colder temps with it, and used it for backcountry skiing as well. It is now one of my most-worn items of clothing and shows no signs of wear. Super impressed!!

Light, Fast, and Warm!

I took my Nexus on a trip to Moab this winter and it was the perfect light mid-layer for whatever I threw its way. Whether climbing, scrambling, or hiking it was breathable and comfortable. I felt no limitations to my range of movement and typically barely noticed it was there. In the mornings and nights, when temperatures were around 20 degrees) it went under a warmer jacket, but from late morning until the evening, temps from 40 to 60, it was really all I needed. The fit is slim, so if you're between sizes I would bump up a size. Highly recommend!

A Solid Backcountry Midlayer!

I have used this midlayer multiple times right over my merino wool baselayers. It is a great option for a light layer that provides a decent amount of extra warmth but still allows the individual to really breath and work up a sweat in. The gridded insulation on the inside of this jacket provides excellent moisture management helping the baselayer wick away any surface moisture on the skin. On those cold days you would still want to add an additional layer of insulation over this before wearing a shell, but so far have really enjoyed this layer!
