    Set Pro BT

The Pieps Set Pro BT includes the Pro BT beacon, 720 C shovel, and Aluminum 300 probe, which are essential safety tools designed for mountain professionals and serious backcountry skiers and splitboarders.

First on the docket is the Pro BT. As Pieps' highest level beacon, it's ideal for backcountry professionals and avid backcountry travelers who need full features and reliable performance. Its 3-antenna design ensures a more accurate, extensive search than 2-antenna beacons, and an impressive 60-meter range helps you perform a signal search from a further distance. The Pro has a multiple burial function and flagging capabilities, meaning you can mark victims as you find them so your partner can begin probing while you locate the rest, and its Victim Selection scans the entire receiving range and indicates the closest three victims. If you get caught and buried in hangfire when your beacon is in receive mode, after it's still for a certain amount of time it'll switch back into send, enabling your signal to be picked up by your rescuers.

The Pro BT can run a self-check, which reviews all the relevant hardware and software elements to ensure the beacon is functioning optimally, and can also review the transmission parameters of your partner's device so you can make sure everyone's beacons are functioning properly before you head out for a day in the backcountry. It also has the capability to pick up the signal from Pieps' TX600 transmitter, which is designed for dogs and transmits outside of the standard frequency that human beacons use. Other high-level features include a digital inclinometer for measuring the slope angle, a scan function for an overview of all of the transmitting devices within the beacon's range, analog mode in case the buried victim has an analog beacon, and signal verification, which means the Pro will only indicate a 457kHz signal and won't get confused with a ghost signal.

Pieps' 720 C shovel can be used as a regular shovel or as a hoe so you can more efficiently move large amounts of snow. Its unique C-shaped handle provides a secure grip, even with gloves on, and a textured foot-rest allows you to force the blade through thick debris and firm snow. The handle and blade seamlessly connect without having to fumble with buttons, making assembly fast.

Last but not least comes the Aluminum 300 probe. Its durable construction and generous length make it perfect for mountain professionals and backcountry travelers in environments with a deep snowpack. It aligns easily when deployed, and the quick closing latch locks the probe so it's structurally sturdy and ready to go. Pieps made the 1-centimeter markings easily visible for accurate snow-depth measurements.

Under no circumstance should anyone use, buy or sell these beacons. The switch mechanism to set the unit between off, search and send relys on a small plastic pin that is prone to not setting properly . Even when the pin is properly placed, it is still exactly that...a thin plastic pin that under any amount of stress, especially in cold weather could be broken even by hand, let alone the force exerted by the washing machine effect of an avalanche. Several times I took off my jacket or did a beacon test to find that the beacon had switched from on to off while touring or riding until it finally broke all together (Two separate units). There are a ton of similar poor reviews online citing the same safety concern of the beacon switching off unintentionally and rendering it useless. I am a die hard black diamond fan but I will never allow anyone in my group to rely on one of these units and I highly recommend that all vendors stop carrying them immediately.
