Why We Like The PRO Road Cycling Shoe

Pearl Izumi wasn't messing around when it came back for the fifth-generation of its PRO Road Cycling Shoes. The brand aimed for a clean, minimalist shoe that takes stiffness to the max thanks to its re-engineered sole that took 24-months of fine detail before being released to us. This lands the 5th-gen at 22% lighter than its predecessor, with every ounce of stiffness and support that we found before.

  • Pearl's coveted road shoe goes on a diet to drop grams
  • Featherweight construction drops 22% weight over previous model
  • Redesigned carbon sole provides total stiffness, doesn't waste watts
  • Sock-like fully knit uppers are completely breathable and comfortable
  • Double boa system allows you to cinch down in 1mm increments
  • Dual-density footbed is ergonomically designed for optimal support
  • PI Dry treatment on upper provides permanent water-shedding protection

Full Bore Race Shoe

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 39.5

These are a true race shoe -- light, super stiff, and very close fitting. Toe box is on the medium to narrow side, no heal movement. Average ventilation. The BOA fasteners work like all the rest and are very adjustable in both directions. Cleat adjustment is good, can get sufficiently rearward. Materials, construction, and workmanship seem on par with other pro level shoes. Sizing seems to be slightly on the small size but they are supposed to be tight -- this is NOT a Gran Fondo shoe. Are they comparable to other pro level shoes? Yes, and far superior to any other PI shoe offered in the past. If on sale, a bargain, IF you want a true, no compromises, race shoe. At full price, a matter of fit vs. all the others. And yes, the red is actually pink.

Like wearing a second sock, runs small

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 46

Very breathable, feels like a second sock. Don't really need to ratchet down boa's unless you like an extra tight fit. The vents on the bottom are great on hot days to help keep feet dry when matched with good wicking socks. Could use a little extra arch support but that's personal. Also, very pink, not red.

Wear an 11 in running shoes, 45-46 in most cycling shoes. These were a definite 46 for me.

Pink not red

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 47

Very bright pink. Pretty cool looking really but very pink. Hifiz for sure. Tried to dye them with dark red dye but did not work. Photos are after the dye which changed it a touch more toward an orange.

Otherwise great shoe. Super stiff sole, lightweight, snug fit. True to size.

Recommend overall just beware about the red one being pink.

Pink not red

They’re not red.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

They’re coral. Closer to Giro pink than red.
They felt tight across the top of my foot no matter the Boa setting and so I returned them.

Total junk -

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 44.5

On a recommendation from one of the gearheads I decided to try these even though I had
reservations simple because they were labeled Pearl Izumi.
Well here's the issues with these.
Boa dials are the old style very noisy and no micro adjustments. Sound like a rachet wrench going bad.
FIt- Ordered a 44.5 my usual size 10 and same according to their chart. Couldn't even get my foot into the sock like opening to try to put the shoe on. The insole I could not spread enough. (I am a typical 10 D in shoes)The fabric around that you would normally put your foot into is roughly cut on the edges and really not high quality at all.
I could not get my foot in these to try the heel cup but it too seemed to be of inferior padding etc.
These shoes are priced the same as Specialized Sworks 7, Shimano RC-9, Bontrager XXX and clearly are not in the same league. While you may not be looking for a pro-level shoe at least they should be constructed and use the higher quality materials these others use.

Amazing shoes

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

After getting my cleat set just right and a short break in; these shoes have got to be the best shoes I've ridden with. Ultra comfortable; really stiff; vents really well; awesome styling. Id recommend sizing down a half to a full size but other than that these shoes are everything youre looking for.

Thanks for the review. Will you clarify if the shoes run small or run big? You recommended sizing down from your normal size but yet the shoes run small.

I ordered my normal size and fit is great.

Can't Be Beat

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 46.5

First off, let me just say these shoes are amazing. Starting from the top, the knit upper combined with double boa closure gives you a fit that is more comfortable and secure than anything else I have tried. The two-boa dials make it easy to adjust the fit on the fly if you have a pain point.

The shoe can be tricky to get into at first. This is because it has a pad to help your heel stay put. That pad does an amazing job, while that knit upper surrounds your foot and keeps it from moving while giving you nice ventilation.

The sole is super lightweight carbon which still gives you plenty of stiffness for excellent power transfer.

I normally size up a full size from my street shoes (size 11.5) for my cycling shoes, but on these I went with a 46.5 and they are perfect. In general I would say come down a half size from your normal cycling shoe size. Width-wise, these are a just hair above average width, but not quite as wide as say a shimano shoe.

    The best!

Wow these shoes are a game changer. Having never worn a full knitted upper like this before I was so impressed with how comprehensive and comfortable the fit was. From the first time putting them on the upper formed to my foot completely, without any pinching or tight spots. The knitted upper combined with the dual BOA system, and the padding around the back of the heel provided the perfect amount of lock down. Fit wise these couldn't have worked better for me.
Along with a snug comfortable fit, having the knitted material provides great breath ability throughout the foot even on hot trainer rides in the basement. That combined with the amount of vents on the sole will give a ton of cooling in the hot summer months.
I sized down a half size from my normal shoe, usually a 46, and the length was just right. Having the two BOAs allowed me to tailor the fit width wise, and was super comfortable on my slightly wide feet.

Could not recommend these more. You won't be dissapointed!

    Fit: True to size

This is one of my favorite shoes I’ve had already. I didn’t even have to mount cleats or put it on to know that I’d like it. When I first heard that Pearl Izumi made a cycling shoe with a knit top, I had mixed emotions about it. The distance cyclist in me said that it would be awesome to have a little bit more mobility and breathability on the top of my foot where I often cramp or feel pain as I’m riding during longer training days. The training cyclist in me worried that the flexibility of the knit top would create a loss of power transfer. After riding these shoes, the distance cyclist won out without question. In fact it turns out I had nothing to worry about as these shoes had as good or better power transfer than my S-works shoes from a couple of years ago. I will note that it felt weird as I put them on (they don’t slip on like a normal cycling shoe), but once they were on my foot, they felt extremely comfortable. Pearl Izumi built these with a ton of padding around the Achilles tendon area so that they actually surround your heel and keep it in place while you’re cycling. I felt like this made sure that I didn’t lose power in the heel area during my pedal stroke. The boa system as always is super reliable and easy to use. I did like that I can pop it up to loosen the whole shoe quickly or turn it backwards to loosen it incrementally. During hot rides, my feet will swell and if I’m on a longer straight segment, I like to open my shoe entirely sometimes to let the feet breathe. Once I get back in a pace line though I take a second to dial my shoes in perfectly so they aren’t too tight on my feet and I can focus on the ride. I feel like this shoe will enable all of those things pretty evenly.

As expected from a knit top shoe, these shoes have awesome ventilation. In addition to the ventilation on the top, they have several wire/mesh ventilation spaces on the bottom. During the winter, this means that they will run a little colder than a normal shoe might and therefore might need additional socks/covers. But during the summer, it’s a huge benefit to help your feet stay cooler and shed some of that heat. The knit top allows for flexibility on the top of the shoe without feeling like it’s giving at all. The toe box is relatively wide on this shoe and I haven’t felt like my feet were cramped in there at all.

All in all, this is one of the greatest shoes I’ve tried. I’ve enjoyed them everytime I’ve worn them and I expect as they break in more and more that they’ll become more and more comfortable. If you’re looking for a shoe that’s comparable to the S-Phyre or the S-Works, but wanting something that might be a little more comfortable for longer periods on the bike, look no further. Pearl Izumi has you covered.
