Cycling during the calendar's chillier months can be a rewarding escape from seasonal obligations, but if you're not properly equipped, those peaceful, therapeutic base miles can just as easily turn into frosty-limbed torture. Pearl Izumi's recommended temperature range of 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit mean the P.R.O. Escape Thermal Men's Jersey is designed for any outing between Thanksgiving and Easter, ensuring that those form-building forays don't turn into sufferfests for the wrong reasons.
Though many of us vary in cold tolerance levels, we find that Pearl's recommended range of temperatures is more or less accurate. This wide range is the result of two types of paneling: Thermal + material, which makes up the jersey's body, and strategically arrayed ventilation panels. Thermal + is a wicking material with a soft, brushed inner face that creates a bit of insulating loft between your heat-generating body and the external chill. Though it does breathe, Thermal +'s insulating properties mean it's not as efficient as Pearl's summer-weight kit, so the additional ventilation panels help keep internal moisture to a minimum during early spring intervals and hill repeats.
The jersey's Escape fit isn't as painted-on as Pearl Izumi's summer-weight racing kit, but it's not to meant to be. The slightly more forgiving cut allows for base layers, but it's still anatomical enough to ride in the saddle without flapping in the wind. It also thrives as a mid-layer, and the rear hem's usual inward-facing silicone grip is matched with an outward-facing equivalent, so the jersey helps maintain coverage for itself and anything you wear over the top of it.Pearl equips the jersey with some serious cargo space. It has four pockets in total, and the center rear pocket is protected by Softshell Lite to help protect vulnerable ride essentials from the elements. The jersey is finished with reflective detailing to help keep you visible on the kind of chilly, overcast afternoons where its insulation will come in handy.

- Q & A
Good insulation layer/No windproofing
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Size Bought: Medium - Fits 39.5" Chest just right if you like a tailored fit.
Great fitting quality piece for the colder-season here in California. It does as great job at keeping me warmer in general, but lacks any kind of windproofing (air moves through it freely). So this means maximum breathability which is great, but minimum protection on cold descents or windy passes. I have to carry a stowable light jacket for those situations with this piece; I am using it as part of my layering options. Pockets are just the way you want them and looks good too.
