Way Too Small!

  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 31

I based my size choice on other shorts purchase on this sight. I bumped up one size based on the feedback I saw on size and it was not enough. I own Patagonia baggies small and they fit great. Most other shorts size 30 waist fir great. 31s are usually baggie. I can’t button the stand up shorts. I owned this short 30 years ago and wore them to sherds. They were my favorites. Comfortable, durable and versatile allowing easy movement. I don’t know why the size is such an issue. I’m very disappointed.

Weird Cut

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I had a bad feeling when I ordered these. I have slim thighs to start so I am always swimming in shorts, but these things were flared out like a skirt. There must have been 10 inches of additional fabric on each leg. If Jncos made shorts this would be the pattern they follow. I liked the length but couldn't get around the excess space in the leg.

Loving these shorts and loving our lands

I snagged 2 pairs of these at the beginning of summer and have loved them. I debated between the 7 and 5in inseam and went with the bold 5 in. They fit me better and show off these wonderful legs my Momma gave me.

yeah man!

Great shorts as usual

I have bought Patagonia gear for many years. My recent purchase was not a disappointment. Thanks for carrying such outstanding merchandise.

Great Pair of Shorts

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 34x7

I bought this pair for work and got exactly what I expected. They are nice enough to get by whether at work or boppin' around town. The only complaint that I have so far - the material is a little heavy for those hot days, but you can't win them all! I would highly recommend this pair of shorts.

Weird back pockets, bad cut

So I read a lot of the reviews before purchasing these shorts (shout to Trev Lawson for his sweet review). I was expecting them to be smaller than sized and they are def snug. I was expecting the legs to flare out some (I think one review said like cut off version of jnco jeans from the 90's which is accurate and hilarious). I was NOT expecting the back pockets to be so ugly! They are cut like the front of a pair of jeans. It looks weird and dumb. And it's not so much a critique of the shorts themselves but more to Backcountry who has zero pics on the site. I don't recommend, the legs flaring out is worse than expected too. Don't recommend:(

my last pair lasted eleven years

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am hoping this pair lasts as long. These shorts stand up to some heavy lifting, especially the pockets which are deep and functional. The material is comfortable from the start and you know it is going to last. I am thrilled Patagonia is still making these classics!

You can get so low in these bad boys...

I have great legs for a dude; chicks love these tree trunks. I usually wear Chubbies shorts, but the material wears out a bit quicker than you want a $50 pair of shorts to. The stand-up shorts are like 3x thicker in terms of the fabric itself with what seems to be an enforced crotch area to deal with that chub-rub. The pocket sitch is a weird one, but you can carry all of your things and not look like a total doofus. My only qualm, and that's why these puppies are getting a 4/5, is the waist sizing. I'm a tried and true 31"ish and went up to a 32" because that's what was available. These guys are tight, not like "suck in the gut" tight, but like a "don't wash or dry on hot" tight. I would have rocked the 33" if it was available, but I could only find those on Patagonia's website. I would have done that, but BackCountry hooked me up with a coupon. I'll know for next time. Either way, these things have held up to 6 nights of heavy drinking downtown Nashville and got me two phone numbers from a bachelorette party, so I'll live with em.

    Classic.

One thing's for sure, you can't go wrong with this short. The canvas fabric is durable and lends a classic look - not to mention, those pockets! Can't get enough of them. The hubs owns two pairs, one with a 28 waist and another in a 30 waist and just about lives in them come summer - basically waffling between his Baggies, running shorts, and the Stand-Up shorts. He does agree that these fit a little more snug (in the waist) than the average 29 / 30 waist, hence owning the two different size options. The thighs do flare out, but they're not offensively large by any means (granted, that's my opinion). For size reference, he's 135lbs, 5'9" and wears a Small in Patagonia bottoms and wears a 29 in Levi's.

And while I know there's a version out there for women, I bought a pair of the men's 28 waist, 5in inseam for myself and they fit great. I often like the fit of the men's shorts a little more, especially when they feature a classic rise. The rise hits my natural waist and is a shade relaxed, but super comfy. The fit in the legs is super comparable to my beloved, classic Baggies, which I much prefer in comparison to the tight fit of most women's shorts. I'd rather not waste my time yanking on my shorts. So, ladies, if you like the fit of the classic baggies, the Stand-Up short (in 5in) is well-worthy a try.

    Love these pants!

Picked up a pair of these recently and am very impressed. They feel a little snug at first, but loosen up within a few minutes. Fairly short shorts and because of this compression shorts show when I sit down. The organic cotton is good too very soft against the skin. The real key to these pants is their durability. They really stand up to anything you can throw at them. The button is metal and the stitching is strong. The only thing i don't like is the Velcro back pockets. I don't really have an issue with this, but i think a more durable choice would have been metal snap closures since Velcro will wear out with heavy use. I never use the back pockets mainly because the front ones are extremely spacious.

Sweet! Thanks for contributing to our community, John.

    SIZE WARNING*******

I figured I would write a review while I am online returning these shorts. I am 5'11'' 150lbs. Normally I wear a 30" waist, sometimes a 31" waist in everything. I originally ordered these in a 30x5 and I am 3" shy of even getting them buttoned. I am returning them to the great people at backcountry for a 32x5 and I think that will still be a tight fit, but I can't go to 34x5.
Why 5 stars? These are awesome and I cannot wait to get a size back that fits!! The material was great, the legs were roomy (without being clown shorts), and the craftsmanship is up to par with Patagonia standards.
Late February in MN and I will have the right size back by the weekend! I love you, Backcountry!

    My Favorites!

I am fond of saying that if I wanted to wear shorts that touch my knees, I would wear pants. The 7" inseam is perfect for my needs. I have owned several pairs of these over the years and I will continue to buy them as they wear out every decade or so. Simple, tough, well-constructed, comfortable and they are great for everyday use on and off the trail.

    Nice Shorts

High quality shorts that were exactly what I'd expect from Patagonia. I had to end up returning them due to the fit, but overall these were top notch.

A note on sizing - I have a 35" waist and usually wear size 34-36, but the 36" waist in this short was easily 3 inches too small.

    Great Shorts

Great Shorts for anytime outdoors activity. However, if you are shy about showing your thigh's then I wouldn't recommend purchasing the 5 inch versions . But , seeing as my thighs are glorious and have humbled greek gods , they accent my lifestyle nicely.

      Comfortable and Perfect Length

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: 32"

The Stand Up Short is incredibly comfortable and I love the 5" inseam option. Too many of the shorts I find online and in stores have long inseams that run down to the knees and while there's nothing wrong with this inseam length, I prefer to have a short that is on the shorter side of things for hiking and relaxing.

The only issue I have with these shorts is that the waist size is not normal. I ordered a 32" waist, which always fits me in all brands, and these were WAY too tight. I had to order up 2" to a 34" to get them to fit properly. I even have 32" pants from Patagonia that fit fine, so I'm not sure why the waist is so small on these!

Take my advice and order a couple inches larger on the waist than you normally would and feel awesome rocking these for years to come on the trails and on the sidewalks, too.

      Skinny dudes beware

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I don't have any doubts about the fabled durability of the Patagonia Stand Up Short. The material feels like soft steel forged in the fires of Mordor and the construction is obviously designed to reinforce high impact areas. But I can't really figure why the thighs are so large. Combined with the funny pocket set up(again I recognize this is more about function than style) they literally look like JNCO decided to make short shorts. All it's missing is some psuedo-urban tag patch on the back. If you have big thighs these are definitely the shorts for you. If you have medium or small thighs these will be highly unflattering.

Agree 100%. Have you found similar shorts that have a slimmer thigh? I have been looking for 5 years.

      THE FIT ..

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: Runs large

These are sturdy and the 5" inseam could be perfect for not having to cuff them BUT they are SO incredibly loose in the leg.

I have tiny little get-away-sticks but these look like a skirt on me.

I was so frustrated with their look that I gave them to my neighbor, a bicyclist with massive trunk-like legs that are ripped to shreds and he has the exact same complaint.

If you buy them, plan your underwear accordingly.

      Everyday pair of shorts

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I bought these as a gift for my father in law and he couldn't be more pleased. These have been his favorite pair of shorts for the last few years and he is always wanting a new pair. He wears them almost everyday so it isn't surprising they are the ideal gift!

      Second pair, and many more

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: 30 Waist 5" length

I first bought this pair of shorts from a retailer nearby my home, but found it to be better priced online. I use these shorts for anything and everything. The canvas comes clean even after I get them dirty every day. The pockets are great for hiking. The 5" shorts are very short so beware your choice of underwear if you wear any with them. The 7" would definitely be the safer choice of the two, but honestly most of the time when I wear them they are so comfortable I don't notice.

      Unanswered Question

Does anyone know how much these shrink when washed?
