Patagonia Down Sweater Vest - Men's

Versatile and environmentally friendly.

From summer climbing in the alpine to winter ski sessions in the backcountry, you may end up taking the Patagonia Men's Down Sweater Vest wherever you roam. Just stow the vest inside its chest pocket before you pack it up, but be sure to let it out regularly so its plush 800-fill Traceable Down insulation retains its loft and efficient insulating properties over time. Patagonia's Traceable Down comes from geese that were never live plucked or force fed.

To enhance its green status, Patagonia made the shell out of a recycled polyester ripstop that's light, windproof, and water-resistant thanks to a DWR finish. Patagonia updated the Down Sweater with a more contoured fit that's longer for better coverage on cold camping trips, and the hem cuffs help retain the down's wonderful warmth. Patagonia also added two zippered handwarmer pockets and a zippered internal chest pocket that doubles as a stow pocket when it's time to pack it up and hit the trail or skintrack.

  • An insulating layer ideal for chilly belays and freezing ski days
  • 800-fill Traceable Down insulation is lightweight and compressible
  • Recycled polyester shell is windproof and water-resistant
  • Adjustable hem and elasticized cuffs work to retain heat
  • One zippered internal stow pocket at chest
  • Contoured fit with longer hem wears over and under layers easily
  • Patagonia is dedicated to producing eco-conscious products

NICE!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XL

Wanted a down vest and found this version on sale so bought the Ramble Red which complements my Patogonia French Red Down Sweater Jacket. The Ramble Red is a bit darker than the French Red which is slighter brighter.
It's not yet cold yet but autumn's cool weather has appeared with winter's cold temperatures coming.
The vest fits over a t-shirt and a lightweight fleece with enough room for a heavier base or mid layer. It's not thick as a regular down vest but appears to be warm enough, at least indoors.
The fabric is lightweight so it probably won't hold up well if you use it harshly.
There's no inner liner in the hand pockets so you'll need to keep some gloves in those pockets.
Buy it when it's on sale ~50% off :)

Great Vest

Great vest very warm everything as expected.

Christmas was won!

Little late getting this review out. I got this vest for my husband, and he loves it. He wears it about every day. It looks great. It's all he needs on more mild winter days. He got a medium and the fit was perfect. Also love that the down is gotten humanely.

    IN LOVE

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Best vest i have ever had! keeps you warm all day and looks really good! I would totally recommend this to anyone!

It gets cold in South Dakota, and I'm an outdoor photographer who isn't afraid of the coldest nights. This vest is great when riding in the truck and jumping in & out, but it doesn't stop there. It's so thin it's an easy way to boost warmth under my main winter parka when the temperature hits zero F and is still in a free fall. It's hard to believe that something this thin and light could be so warm! I've worn it almost everyday since receiving it last month (in temperatures hovering near zero F) and would buy another one of these if something happened to this one. I wear under either an Outdoor Research Floodlight (lightweight jacket) or under a Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero parka when the mercury is hiding in the thermometer's bulb.

    Every dad should have one

My father loves this vest. He likes this better then the ultra light down vest because he wanted more substance to it. He loves the fit, how warm it keeps him and it looks really nice.

It's nice but not at full price

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

This vest is nice. It's surprisingly warm and seems durable. I also have a Mountain Hardwear Nitrous jacket, and this is definitely thicker than that. That isn't really a benefit or a drawback, but note that it is pretty thick and pretty warm. The price is really high though. I got mine on sale and it isn't hard to find this or similar down vests from other manufacturers for the $90-120 range.

As for sizing, I'm 5'11'' and 175lbs and the medium fits comfortably with a lightweight fleece underneath. I have a little room but not too much extra.

      Excellent vest

Fits great. Really warm. Color arbor green is the same as picture.
      Fully recommended.

      Two thumbs up!

      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Large

I originally ordered an XL by mistake, and had to exchange. The Large was a perfect fit for my man; but it does run a bit large. Being a puffy, it packs easily for hiking but fluffs right back up. If you've never owned a vest, they are worth the splurge to regulate body temperature without over-heating.

      Great vest!

I absolutely love this vest and it is by far the best vest I own. It's amazing how warm the vest is for being so lightweight, and I love the feature of being able to pack it into its own pocket. This makes is great when traveling and/or backpacking. I would definitely recommend this vest to anyone who is considering it.

      Sizing off for me

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium & Large

Sizing just off for me on this at 6'/180 lbs/41" chest. Large was just big all around (gut/mid-section & chest), exchanged for a Medium, which was just too tight in the chest. I just happen to be right in between on Patagonia sizing on that vest. Thanks to Ben @ BC for being so patient with me on all the exchanging. I finally settled on a Arcteryx Cerium LT vest in Large which fits perfect.
Still give this 5 stars since it's a solid vest...just my wacky body type/size doesn't jive with Patagonia sizing.

I could fit two people inside an XL

I'm sure this vest is a great piece if it happens to fit you, but the sizing is really weird. I'm 6'2" and 195 lbs. Based on other reviews, I knew it was probably going to be on the big side. And Patagonia says up front it's not a slim or athletic fit vest. But I'm fairly tall so I wanted it to be long enough. Well, an XL is long enough. But it's also big enough to fit an additional person. If I had an extra 50 lbs of beer belly it'd probably fit just great (hey, gotta have goals, right?!).

I am 5"11 and 195 pounds, what size should I get. Read all the reviews and still can't make up my mind

Benjamin, I think you'd be happy with a large.

This vest is just what I needed.

True to size, warm and functional. Good buy!! Backcountry is easy to work with too. Can't go wrong.

      Love the material!

Great placement of pockets. The material breaths easily when slightly zipped (probably just a consequence of no sleeves, but hey). Slightly puffy, without being all puffed up in your field of view, in your face, or making you feel weird. Looks great. Just buy one now.

Love this vest, though a little roomie

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: large

Love the quality, style and functionality of this vest. Haven't had a chance to put it through the wringer quite yet, however.

I wish this vest were a little more form-fitting. I'm 6'3", 200lbs and a size L is somewhat spacious. I didn't want to compromise the length so I stuck with a large.

Hard to improve on this vest

For some reason I used to be a vest hater. I'm not really quite sure why, but once I realized the incredible versatility of a puffy vest, I was hooked. I actually own both this vest (in black, picture below) and the Patagonia Nano Puff Vest. The down vest is certainly more lofted and warmer relative to the Nano Puff, so I choose which vest to wear based on the temps and expected level of moisture (Nano Puff is synthetic and performs better when damp).

Hard to improve on this vest

Nice Quality but Large is too short

        • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
        • Size Bought: L

I bought the L after having tried on an XL Down Sweater Jacket. The jacket in XL was way to roomy for me. The vest in Large ends up being a snug but usable fit in all but the length. Its simply to short. Seems there is a gap in between the XL and L. I have had similar problems with North Face sizing.

        Low-profile, high-quality

I love this thing. Other puffy vests I've had in the past are too bulk to wear as a midlayer, but this is perfect under a shell. I've worn it every day for the last month.

Perfect for cool spring and summer mornings. 50's with a t-shirt seems to be the perfect combo. It will fit under my Arcteyx Atom LT on the really cold days.

The fit is perfect. It looks good with a t-shirt but I can wear a fleece pullover underneath it comfortably. It stuffs down well and will be a great addition for summer backpacking. I think this will be one of my go-to layering piece on my November deer and elk hunts.
