Descensionist Pant

You have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with gravity in the winter. When you're skinning for hours or bootpacking up steep out-of-bounds slopes you sometimes can't stand it, but all is forgiven immediately when you're suddenly sailing through fresh snow, carving waist deep turns all the way home. For those who are constantly fighting gravity so they can find the best spots to befriend it, there's the Patagonia Descensionist Pant. Patagonia's most breathable waterproof shell-pant yet, the Descensionist is made from soft and stretchy three-layer fabric that'll keep you protected from drifting snow and howling winds without overheating at the first (or second, or third) sign of hard work.

A moisture-managing knit backer wicks away sweat on wearying climbs, while zippered vents on the back thigh quickly release heat when you need to really air things out. Ankle gaiters keep out snow whether you're spraying powder or postholing your way to glory. The waist has an integrated, adjustable belt to keep your fit secure, while multiple front pockets give you easy access to necessary snacks and gear.

  • Ascend and descend epic peaks with this ultra-breathable shell pant
  • Highly breathable three-layer fabric offers waterproof protection
  • Articulated design and mechanical stretch offer full range of motion
  • Back-thigh vents provide extra temp management for tough climbs
  • Ankle gaiters keep the snow out when you posthole
  • Knit backer wicks away moisture to keep your layers dry
  • Adjustable belt keeps pants from sagging on long ascents
  • Watertight pockets keep maps, gear, and energy bars within reach

Spring Ski/Snowboard Holy Grail Pants

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M

I bought these for spring splitboarding, when the sun is hot and I'm sweating buckets. The pants are thin and very breathable. Amazing! Great motion, and somewhat baggy which I like. Perfect ski pants for warmer weather. Now I can't believe I've spent ~20 years of spring riding suffering in normal winter pants. These pants are a game changer. Might be too cold for winter, though.

Mind = Blown

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I bought these for my dad when his old ski pants ripped. He was super skeptical about how waterproof they would be when he felt the fabric because it's so soft to the touch and moves with ease. After skiing through a powder day in Utah and in the Sierra Nevada Mountains as well without any wetting out, he's been convinced that these pants are all they're cracked up to be.

My dad is 6'2" and very lean, but the Large work well for him in length and in the waist thanks to the built-in belt. The fit isn't too tight, but they certainly aren't a super steezy, baggy pant either. If you're looking for a comfortable, bombproof pant with a pant leg width that's somewhere in the middle, these are going to be your best bet!

Nylon Potato Sack

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large

What's the deal with Patagonia sizing?! It's an outdoor clothing company making clothing for couch potatoes. I'm 6'3", 185 lbs, with a 35" waist. I ordered size Large, and they hang off me like a saggy nylon sack. Over the years I've seen Patagonia go further and further toward making clothing for ever expanding America girth, with is why I'm usually buying Arcteryx, Mammut, or Dynafit, which have much slimmer European fits. The other thing about these pants is they feel like plastic on the skin.

Good pants!

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: True to size

I got these as a gift for my brother, and he has not experienced this zipper issue as of yet. Other than this potential issue we will watch for , they are a good fit, material seems durable and they keep him dry and warm with a good baselayer for resort snowboardng here in Utah.

Really bad zippers.. Break in the cold

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I like these pants. They fit well, have great ventilation and are well designed. The big problem comes from the zippers that are used for the thigh pockets. These are different than previous Patagonia zippers and have large plastic teeth. Yesterday I was skiing in a temperature of about 15 degrees F. The teeth on both zippers cracked in the cold and the zippers burst open. I brought the pants to a local gear repair expert and she informed me that this has proven a significant design flaw in recent Patagonia products. I would say to definitely stay away from these pants given the awful zipper choice. Be warned
