All-Time Favorite

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I wear this top all the time- literally. I'm anemic so I'm always cold and this thing is the base of everything I wear. I've had it for over a year. I use it hiking year-round. In summer I pop it over a tank until the sun comes up and in winter it's my baselayer under a hoodie & puffy. It has this magical way of knowing what temperature I want to be and makes me that. Added bonus of somehow not being see-through despite how lightweight it is. Worth every cent.

Breathable & Super Lightweight

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I wouldn't really consider this item much of a baselayer because it's so lightweight, but it's a perfect 3-season shirt. It protects you from the sun, is super breathable, and the long sleeves can also give you that tinyyyy bit of warmth that you might want on some slightly chillier days. I worked outdoors in this shirt in 100+ degree weather, too, and I always felt great in it since it's thin enough to let in a breeze. It fits exactly like it looks in the picture. Also... THUMBHOLES!!!!

All Around Shirt

I have worn this shirt so much since purchasing it. Running, climbing and biking! It protects from the sun and is very light weight. The material wicks away sweat and keeps you dry.

    little lighter weight than expected

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium

I have multiple Capilene mid weight shirts - thought I would try this lighter weight.
Yes, it is still wonderful; however, just a bit lighter / thinner than expected. This is almost the weight of a sun shirt.
Works alright if you have layers - and nice to have one thin enough to tuck in under items more like a tank. Just a bit harder to consider as a single layer than I expected. Worked well with nano puff items.

    Lightweight Perfection - No Joke

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

My go-to for ski days when a lightweight next-to-skin layer is what the day calls for (for a warmer, cozy yet still breathable baselayer, check out the Patagonia Midweight Capilene top). Super versatile for layering in cooler temps and other active outdoor sports, as well as a casual top too. LOVE IT!

    Capilene can do NO wrong!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

Simply put, any Capilene you purchase will serve its purpose very well. Got this for my mom so she could travel and explore Europe outside during the winter. It looks great and can be worn standalone on warmer days or can be the perfect base layer for cold days where she wanted to wick sweat but still stay warm. She's 5'9" 150 lbs w/ a larger bust so we went w/ the L and it turned out to be the perfect size. This is a great multidimensional piece that everyone should have in their quiver!

    Super lightweight

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

Super light, breathable, and comfortable. Wore this base layer with a vest for touring, and it was the perfect temperature. Can be worn with any layering system.

    Goes up my armpits

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Medium

I love this shirt so much but it goes up my armpits :( I even ordered the next size up and it did the same thing. I have read other reviews that say the same thing about Patagonia shirts. It is built for women with a very small back/chest. I wish I would have got to wear it because I have heard that the material is great and high quality. Here are my measurements if you would like to compare to the picture below: 34C, 5'7, 140 pounds

    Goes up my armpits

    Great Colors

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

Bought this as a gift and have some feedback. The fit is true to size and the colors are great. The seam in the arms is very noticeable, not sure if it will become irritating or not.

    Gets The Job Done

I gave this baselayer to my fiance for skiing and she has had only good news to report. She said its worked great at keeping her warm and dry. Furthermore, she liked how it looks like a pretty normal shirt so that after a long day of skiing she can lose the jacket and relax in the lodge without looking like a bum. She'll probably start using it for some spring hiking when the time comes as well.

    Great for running.

LW Cap passes the test both as a baselayer and as a running top. Boom!

    Great for running.

    Shoulder/seam detailing

Off-set shoulder seams--good for resisting chafe as well as allowing it to look like it fits despite having broader shoulders. Double nice.

I'm sorry I ever doubted you, Capilene.

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

    SIZE REFERENCE:
    Height: 5' 4.75"
    Bust/Waist/Hips: 33", 25/26", 34.5"
    Weight: 105 lb.
    Dress/Pant Size: 0/25
    Bra: 32A/34AA/XS/S

I have this in an XXS.

FIT: The fit in this piece is consistent with the rest of Patagonia's slim fit pieces. Because my shoulders are a little broad/bigger compared to the rest of my body (I have more of a V-shape up top) and I also have longer arms, the sleeves are a bit short and the shoulders are a bit tight (yet I still have a bit of room in the lower torso). Despite this I still go true to size, and since I have a body type that's a little hard to fit and the discomfort is minor, no stars docked for fit.

PERFORMANCE: I mainly got this baselayer because I love Patagonia's merino baselayers--a lot. Maybe too much! And though I really adore my Thermal Weight Capilene, I have always preferred my Merino Midweight to almost any baselayer. So for me this was a real test just to see if Capilene could give merino a run for its money. The result: I was very, very pleasantly surprised. I went for a fairly intense hilly run in this and wore it for a total of around 48 hours (with about a single 8-hour air-out/dry-time overnight while I was sleeping and also wore it to bed one night) and was very pleased. The polygiene really did its job. While running and sweating, it did a great job keeping me dry and comfortable, but it was also light and thin enough that I could feel the wonderfully cool air. I started off wearing my Houdini as my shell and then ended with just the Capilene in 45-degree F weather. It was perfect.

BOTTOM LINE: Though I love merino, this sealed the deal for me on Capilene. I want to be able to have synthetic pieces that are versatile and can perform well during any objective, especially when safety (body temp/perspiration) is a real issue. This piece is going to play an important role in my layering system.

I'm sorry I ever doubted you, Capilene.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for stating all your measurements! So many reviews just say 'true to size' or 'fits great' without giving ANY frame of reference. Your review help me decide.

    Excellent!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: xl

Purchased this base layer for hiking (southeast, so 4 seasons of hiking) and for a summer hiking trip to northern and central Alaska. Researched ahead of time the best base layers on the market in my price range and this one was always on top for quality and dependability. It, along with the thermal grade Capilene, quickly turned into my go-tops. Warm, light, and an excellent length for a tall/ long torso person. I also purchased one for my sister who is very petite and it fit her wonderfully. After hiking in it for three days, it did not smell terrible like my other layers either. Highly recommended. Worth the cost.

What all the fuss is about.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium

This is my first piece of Capilene. I been told for years that I should use these base layers because they're awesome. Now, I know what the fuss is about.

I wanted to really put this to the test, so I used this running on a very windy and cold day. The wind was so cold I had to run back for a face mask. I ran very comfortably in this shirt, with nothing over it. It blocked the wind enough and kept me warm, even though it's so very thin. I'm not sure how they do it, but it really does trap heat. I've since been using this skiing, as it breathes really well. I've also been wearing it around the house a lot, just because I stay so comfortably warm in it.

I'm not sure about the fit. I'm usually a medium in shirts. I'm 5'8, 135lbs. I can wear small, but they typically aren't long enough in the torso, so medium is usually a good fit. I got the medium in this and it fits, but it's rather loose and quite long. I'm not sure if they meant for it to be loose, or if I should have picked up the small. I will definitely try the small, next time. I like my base layers to be more fitted.

I highly recommend these capilene base layers.

    Chest:
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
    Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
    Hip:
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
    Inseam:
Inseam will vary depending on style; when lengths are offered, "short" is 30, "regular" is 32 and "long" is 33. Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
