Parajumpers Long Bear Down Jacket - Women's
ParajumpersLong Bear Down Jacket - Women's

Inspired by adventurers, designed for you.

Just because you're in town doesn't mean it isn't bitingly cold, which makes the Parajumpers Long Bear Women's Down Jacket a godsend for fashionable living in icy cities. It's obviously stylish, with a slim thigh-length fit, smooth nylon fabric, and a removable fur ruff, but it's also made to defeat the elements with wonderfully warm down insulation, a water-resistant DWR coating, and side vents to keep you comfortable if temperatures rise during the day. It's the details that make the Long Bear stand out, though: the hem drawstrings and removable cinch hood keep drafts down and style up, while the diagonal hand pockets, Parajumpers shoulder patch, and unmistakeable PJS snap hook give it a look that no other jacket can match.

  • Nylon fabric with a DWR coating
  • Polyester lining
  • 90/10 down insulation
  • Zippered side vents
  • Detachable hood with a removable fur ruff
  • Hand pockets
  • Slim fit
  • PJS snap hook

Very disappointed

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

Unfortunately, it is a surprisingly poorly made coat for Parajumpers Brand.

1) The hood is not lined with a rabbit fur, it is lined with a very heavy fake fur which makes a hood REALLY heavy.
2) The fake fur liner is attached to the hood with multiple touch fastener straps. If you detach fur liner from the hood and put the hood on , the remaining touch fastener strap will damage your hat.
3) If you detach the hood from the coat, the collar around the neck is as warm as your shirt collar. Also the collar is very tight. The collar is 1 inch high, which is not warm for any winter.
4) The collar is so tight, you cannot wear a scarf under.
5) There are only 2 outside pockets. No inside pockets.
6) The fastener on the hood is really heavy , metal and it looks like a piece from climbing gear.

I am returning this coat.

What is the weight of this coat?

Not Warm

I have owned this coat since January 2015 so my coat is an older model with the split hood but I felt compelled to write the review that I would have appreciated reading before I purchased this coat.
Contrary to the other positive reviews for this coat, I want to emphasize this coat is gorgeous, I love the look especially the hood but this coat is not warm. Not at all. I will wear this coat up until 0C/32F but below that temp I have had to purchase a few vests to wear underneath to make this coat work. Very disappointing. For anyone who asks, this coat gives the illusion you will be warm but then you will freeze. If you are looking for an alternative to Canada goose because you want warmth, keep looking, this is not that coat. If you are a person who is warm as long as your head is warm then this coat can work. For the rest of us that need warm arms, or warm shoulders, warm torso, warm hips or backside then you will likely feel cold in this coat. The coat is cold since it feels like it was designed with style in mind first, then warmth secondary or not at all.

These are the reasons why it is cold:
1) The shoulders have all this beautiful detailing (orange stripes ribbing, a pull handle, etc) all those areas have stitch-through construction so those areas are not filled with down.
2) the shape of this coat is very A-Lined (bell-shaped) It's very narrow in the shoulders and then has an extreme flare. As a result the cold air comes up the coat. I feel cold air all up my back and all the way in the front to my bra line. My stomach constantly feels the draft of cold air. If the coat fit around the waist or hips then less cold air would come up.
3) The cinch ties at the bottom are useless. They are so slippery that the don't hold the tie and the coat material is so rigid that one can not gather the material to make it narrower. Even if one could cinch the bottom, one could not walk or take a normal size stride because then you'd be tied around your knees.
4) the neck is really tight so there is little space for a scarf. Also the button and metal latch needs to be done up in order to keep the hood on. On days I happen to be wearing a hoodie with this jacket, I feel like I am being strangled cause the neck is so tight. If the button at the neck is not done up then the weight of the hood pulls the jacket backwards opening up the coat. The zipper doesn't seem to lock down very well. I can only wear a neck gaiter with this jacket.
This coat could possibly be warm for very pear shaped women. If one had wider hips then they could fill the lower space of this coat so the cold air could not come up and one would retain more of their body heat.
Some positive notes about this coat: I like that this coat is machine washable and the outer material has retained its good looks by not fraying or fading. I have the CG Trillium (which is 3 years old. Purchased a few months before the Long Bear) and it looks awful. The colour has worn and faded along the seams. I can see the material starting to fray on the arms especially by the cuffs. The Long bear looks much like it did the day I bought it.

If you live somewhere not too cold and want an excessively heavy parka that won't be overly warm then this coat can work. Essentially I would recommend this coat If you are looking for something 17 times the weight but of comparable warmth to moncler. If you are looking for the warmest of coats, go with Canada goose (I own the Trillium, the mystique. Rossclair and thanks to the Parajumpers Long bear I purchased the lifestyle vest to wear underneath.). There is a reason why Canada Goose have gained their reputation for making the warmest coats. Nobis (I own the Astrid. Machine washable and waterproof) and Moose knuckles are very warm parkas that not everyone has. I would suggest these parkas over the Long Bear if someone is looking for warmth and not CG. BTW, my Long bear is authentic purchased from Sporting Life and not from Backcountry in case anyone was wondering. I'm sure backcountry is wonderful.

HI. I just wanted to recommend the Marmot Montreal or Montreaux coat. I think you and I have the same issue with warm coats, and I promise you that the Montreal is WARM not matter what. It has to do with the cut and the interior lining of the jacket. Hope this helps.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review. I wish more people would take the time to focus on a garment's good or bad qualities instead of personal issues that do nothing to help in making a decision.

I was debating between this coat and the Canada Goose. I have seen a lot of people wearing Canada Goose lately and I didn't want the same thing as everyone else. Then, I saw this exact Parajumpber coat on a couple of people and I liked it right away. I figured with a price similar to Canada Goose, it must be at least as good as Canada Goose. I must say that I do like the style and the longer length. I also liked that the material is water proof so I could wear it during rain or snow. However, I feel it's not really that warm, maybe just warm enough for temperatures in the upper 20's and definitely not in the teens. Also, from the description of the coat, I was expecting a real rabbit fur lined hood and raccoon fur trim, however, the hood is lined with fake fur and there is no rabbit fur anywhere to be found on the coat. I now wonder if the Canada Goose would have been a better option.

I do have to give credit to Brooklynn Hall, one of Backcountry's Customer Service Manager. She was very helpful during my ordering process and answering my questions about the discrepancy in the description regarding rabbit fur vs. fake fur.

This quickly became my favourite winter jacket. From the moment you take it out of the box, you know that it's serious quality.

I've worn this jacket on the day-to-day but also in -30 C and for the first winter of my life, I finally felt like I had I winter jacket that I loved.

Make the purchase, it's worth it!

I gave this jacket to my sister for Christmas who recently move to the east coast. She said that is has been a life saver in the recent 10 degree weather. She is 5’6” and about 125 was debating between an xs and s, but glad she went with the small for extra room for a sweater. Heavy and high quality, the only complaint on days in he 40’s it may be too warm! Highly recommended.

Best Coat!!!

I bought this coat last year and have been using the coat whenever the cold front comes around. It is incredibly warm and toasty. I don't feel the winter wind or chill at all when I have this coat on. This coat actually have some shape so instead of looking like wearing blankets, I look like a person underneath the coat. I get many compliments whenever wearing this coat and I am very satisfied with it's quality. It was actually a replacement of Canada Goose coat which I owned for more than 5 years. After 5 years of rigorous usage, the coat actually needed to retired and I thought of replacing with the same brand. Upon inspecting the newer models, I wasn't satisfied with the quality so I shopped around and found Parajumpers. I love the quality of Parajumpers and now our whole family has a coat, including my son. If you are looking for a quality coat that would last years, get one. You won't regret it. As for the size, I feel that they do run pretty on target. I usually wear xs in most clothes but prefer small in outerwear, so that I could layer thicker sweater or sweatshirt underneath without feeling to tight. Small fit me with extra room for thicker layers and room to move around. Just personal preference.

Love this coat!

I love this coat - it is beautiful, comfortable, and warm, and definitely worth the investment! I have to agree with other reviewers that it does run small. I usually wear a size 2, and mostly wear a size small for tops and jackets but occasionally an extra small, so I initially decided to order the size small. However, when I tried it on it felt very tight in the shoulders and arms, so I returned it for a medium.

Best purchase ever.

Absolutely love it. Worth every penny. Yesterday the temp was 18 F. I walk to the gym. And walk back home. I was all warm and toasty. I have to say I bought both the small and medium. I’m always a small. I even own another parajumpers coat that’s a small. Yet this one the small was too small and didn’t fit. I kept the medium and returned the small. All the other reviewers were right. Happy I ordered both to try. If you buy it you won’t regret it. It’s awesome.

Incredibly Special

Such a warm and beautiful parka.

Fabulous, but functional.

This coat is very warm, indeed, even though it has incredible style. It's unique, no doubt. I adore this like crazy.

I am typically a medium in things. This is no exception. The medium is perfect. I'm 5.8 135's with an ample chest and climber-shoulders, but the chest fits fine.

Fabulous, but functional.

Incredibly Warm & Stylish

This coat is definitely made for cold weather. It has a nice slim fit & the fur hood is removable. The fabric seems pretty durable as well & I think it would hold up well to wind or snow. I am 5'7" 115 lbs & the XS fit me well. I have long arms & still found the sleeves to be a good length.

Great Deal

I originally bought the Parajumpers long bear down coat for an upcoming move to a cold Northern European capital with regular winter temperatures dropping close to -20 F. I have not yet had the chance to test it out there, but I did have a chance to test run the coat during a short vacation to Iceland in January. The temperature was less cold than expected---about in the 20-degree range, but the wind and rain were brutal. The coat is heavy and durable and completely blocked the strong winds when I was hiking along the coast. I continually got sprayed by the waves hitting the coast which included tiny particles of ice. Although the outer part of the jacket was soaked after my hike, my shirt was amazingly completely dry underneath, and I was wearing waterproof pants. I am about 5'8, wear a size M and the jacket reaches the top of my knees.

Pros: While the (real) fur lining of the hood is completely amazing and feels like a pillow, luckily it is removable, and drawstrings on the hood allow you to protect your hair from rain or snow and prevent the hood from blowing back. The jacket is machine washable. Despite its functionality, It is also very slim and stylish. It has a European cut and feel to it meaning it is very slim and fits close to the body. Despite the picture, the coat is not boxy by any means and it really flatters a female silhouette. Although I have a size M, it would really be an S in any other brand I think. Therefore, don't be shy about ordering up a size if you want something roomier.

Cons: Like others have mentioned...the pockets. They are placed a little too high above the waist. Whatever you put in them will probably be secure, but I did wish the coat had inside zip pockets. One pocket fits my cellphone the other fits my wallet, and thats about it.

Prior to my trip, I scoured the internet trying to find the perfect winter coat. I did NOT want a Canada Goose brand coat because I felt that I could find something of even better quality for that amount of money. Eventually, it was getting down to the trip was less than a week away and I still hadn't purchased a winter coat! I just want to say that Backcountry did an amazing job by shipping it to my address with the 2-day free shipping and I received it just a day before I was scheduled to leave. I even got a nice follow up call from a Backcountry gear expert asking how my trip to Iceland was and how the coat held up. Overall, it was great, and I look forward to wearing it this winter!

So glad to hear you found a coat that you love Melissa!
Totally understand your hesitation with the fur - just know that it does provide a huge additional warmth factor with wind protection (should you decide to reattach it). Fingers crossed you get to wear it all the time this winter!!

I was looking for an alternative to a Canada Goose because there are just too many out there. Found this coat and I'm glad I did. The coat is super warm and the fur on/in the hood is amazing! The entire hood is lined with fur so it keeps the head warm. I love the length as well.
Another reviewer said extra layers would be required in 10 degree weather, so I was a little nervous since I live in New England. We had our first single digit day with the wind chill in the negatives and the coat did not disappoint. I was plenty warm with just a thin sweater.

You did an awesome job of finding a jacket with as much warmth, but it's own individuality. Glad to hear you found a coat you love that will keep you toasty warm in New England!

No Zipped Hood on the 2017 Version

The new 2017 has a cinched hood, instead of the zipper. We do not have the 2016 version with the zipper.

Quality, color, warmth, and versatility can't be beat. looked at this and Canadian Goose and am very pleased we went with the Parajumper brand. This coat really 'long' by the way and love that being tall!

Unanswered Question

How heavy is the coat. I have the kodiak which is pretty heavy (weight) and curious how this compares. Also wanted to see if the marine blue is close to a navy?
