Climb High and Hard in Comfort

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

These qualify as your All Around Adventure Pants for whatever use you want to throw at them. I've done yoga, gone climbing, gone to work, out on the town, hikes in heat and through snow, all in a few short weeks and they stood up to the test! Comfortable with some good stretch to be able to move around for all these activities, and they look good doing it! The side pocket is nice for storing things while moving around so much, but the zipper on mine was finicky and sometimes tried to come off or not zip perfectly. Still worked great and I loved them!

I used these pants for a hike, climb, and yoga session in the same day. No restriction on movement here at all!
Like others have mentioned these pants are breathable (thank you mesh pockets!), they stretch, are fairly waterproof, and are durable enough to stand up to enough rock climbs and hikes through the brush I've been able to put them through.
The waist pockets are weirdly small though. It's the only pair of pants where my admittedly large iPhone6+ doesn't fit in all the way. No problem, they can just go in the zippered thigh pocket.

Hey Ben - Thank you! Definitely NOT waterproof... but we do use a DWR and they do shed water just fine!. Thank you for the feedback on the pockets!

A pant for many uses

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 32

These pants are awesome because they can be used for hiking, climbing, yoga, casual or pretty much anything you need them for. They run true to size and a 32 fits me well. They are stretchy, durable, water resistant, and breathable. They do not restrict movement at all. The have a good zip pocket for your essential while hiking or climbing. The other pockets are a bit shallow, if you want deeper pockets then go with the Ferrosi pants. These pants a bit thicker than the Ferrosi and will keep you a little bit warmer on a windy or chilly day. They are durable and will be able to take a beating climbing and hiking.

Superb Softshell Pant

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 30

Fantastic breathability, stretch, and durability make this an amazing pant for the active outdoor enthusiast. I took them out climbing and was impressed at how freely I was able to move. The waist band was extremely comfortable. Only one warning: If you have thunder thighs and a thin waist, this is not the pant for you. The legs were very tight around my thighs. This happens to me with all pants, however, so if its not a common issue for you, the shorts will be great. I just have the most annoying waist to thigh ratio ever. Even with the overly snug fit, the still climbed great.

Thanks so much Matt! Enjoy your Voodoos!

These pants are durable!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: 30 regular

I bought these for geology field camp and ended up wearing them every day for nearly two months of fieldwork, backpacking, and climbing adventures because the other pair of pants I brought didn't hold up. I'm back in civilization now, am still wearing them almost every day, and they're still going strong. The only thing that has failed is the stitching around the back pockets due to abrasion, but that was easily fixed. That said, here are some pros and cons:
Cons:
Waist size runs large
Length runs short (gaiters were a necessity with these pants as they weren't long enough to keep debris out of my boots)
Pros:
Pockets!! (others have said the hand pockets are too small, but, being a woman used to pathetically small pockets on pants, I found these glorious) The thigh pocket is especially nice, perfect for phone, camera, or granola bar.

Durability!! These stood up to two months of scrambling over limestone and volcanic rocks - pointy abrasive stuff - and only ended up with one tiny hole in the knee.

Comfort!! Super stretchy, water resistant, wind resistant, quick dry (took an accidental dip in a stream on a cloudy/chilly day - the pants were still dry in a couple hours of hiking), plenty of range of motion.

Good pants that I can't wear climbing

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 30x32

I got these pants to replace my OR prusik pants after some seams blew out. OR was out of Prusiks in my size, so I went with the voodoos.

I'll say the pants themselves are well done. They fit my build (cyclist; large legs slim waist) well, they breathe well, and the articulations stop the pants from shifting around while you move.

With that said, I haven't had a good time hiking or climbing in these pants for two reasons.

1: The pocket design is poor. The hand pockets are very shallow. Barely deep enough to hold my phone while I hike. Also because they are so shallow I can feel the top of my phone dig into my hips whenever I bend forwards. Not great, and not secure enough to put any valuables in. Pretty much useless handwarmer pockets. I'd about trust a chapstick in there. Rear pockets, same thing. Tiny. Right rear pocket is zippered.

Of course with all climbing pants there's a thigh pocket that's accessible while your harness is on. This is a really deep zippered pocket on the voodoos which is nice. However they are placed in such a way that whatever you put in them can slide behind your knee/onto your hamstrings. This makes high stepping and squatting difficult and uncomfortable. You definitely could fit a phone or bars or a map in there, but you'll feel the corners dig into the back of your knee any time you flex your leg. Not a fan.

2. The waist on these pants stretched and I'm unable to wear them without a belt. Belts coupled with harnesses and hip straps are uncomfortable so it's hard to use these for the things I bought them for. There is no integrated belt. The belt loops fit my 1 inch wide webbing belt well.

In conclusion I can't recommend these for climbing or hiking. They are excellent pants for lounging and casual wear but for the reasons listed above I'm not a fan of them as technical pants.

Check out the OR prusiks. Much better IMO.

Pockets?

Just got 2 pair in the mail, haven't tried them on but the pockets are ridiculous. If you're gonna make the pockets so shallow then just don't put pockets on the pants. I have some Ferrosi pants and the pockets are much deeper.

    Wanted to love these...

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 32/Reg

I'm kind of a OR junky & wanted to love these pants. Great material & cut, but like others have said, they are too short in length & the pockets.

    disapointed

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Size Bought: 32 reg

Bought these (32 reg) after getting the OR Ferrosi convertible in 32 reg.
Im normally a 32x34, waist on ferrosi was perfect, voodoo was to big.
Length on the ferrosi was on the verge of being short, these were way short.
Figured ordering the same size, there would be some consistency in sizing, not the case. Bummed because i wanted a soft shell with a bit more weight than the ferrosi.

    Comfy, waist almost too loose

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: 38 Regular

I'm 6'1, 230lbs and in Levi's and most pants I wear a 38W x 33L. True waistline measured with a tape is 40.75". I purchased the Voodoo Softshell Pant in a 38/R. The waist feels more like a 40W as I've got enough room to stick a fist inside my waistband, but the seat is perfect and length feels true to size (33L). So a little looser than I'd prefer in the waist and when fat-shedding season comes around they will be too loose for around town but still fine for backpacking. I really like the design and feel of the pants, very lightweight, thin and soft, which is comfortable but could be an issue if you go commando or carry concealed. Pockets are a little shallow. but deep enough for an iphone X..I'm on the fence about the Shade color, it's akin to a faded pair of OR scrubs but not horrible, just a little more pastel than I expected. I like the pants enough that if I were to do it again I would have ordered the 36/R at the same time to see which size worked best and then returned the other.

    Comfortable

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 32/M

Comfortable pant that stretches when you move. I'm 5-11, 180 and ordered a 32/R and it fits perfectly. Worn on morning hikes around 50-60 degrees with no issues with cold. Not a huge fan of the front pockets as they are quite small but no other issues with the pants

    They Work Very Well

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: 30

Finally put a hole in a pair after 5 years of wearing an average of 3 times a week. Used for mtb, hard enduro dirt biking, moto trials, climbing, raft trips, etc, and hiking when they make me. Stretch like no other. Ultra light and packable. Dry very fast. Very abrasion resistant...abrasion proof, basically. Inside is woven in a way that makes them softer to the touch, not that plasty slick feel. I wear them all season with thin base under in the winter if it's under 30 and in up to 105ish in the desert summer. Side pocket fits an iphone plus with Otterbox and is still deep enough to not have to zip, which is now a prerequisite for outdoor pants. Ordering another pair today. @ 6' 180lb I'm normally a 32, but in these a 30 which gives a slim athletic fit that's needed for technical use.

    Great pants for backpacking!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 32/Reg

I picked up these voodoo softshell pants mainly to use for weekend backpacking trips and they didn't disappoint! Durable enough to stand up to brush and rocks yet lightweight enough to go in the pack and not add extra weight or take up too much space.

Would highly recommend these for backpacking or just getting out for a day hike. Great pair of softshells from outdoor research!

Yes they run a touch short, but not enough that it's an issue. If anything it keeps them right on top of your hiking shoes and out of the mud!

    great for many uses

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs large

I took these pants snowshoeing and they were great. Breathable, water resistant, just the right amount of stretch, and a fit that you can wear not doing outdoors activities if you'd like. The articulated knee provides great mobility and I agree that the pants run a little bit wide in the waist.

    Wider and Shorter than expected

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small

I purchased these years back, but never put them to use. I am 6'4 and lanky, these pants are wide and short, and looked/felt silly on myself.

    Too Short, Shallow Pockets

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 30x32

OR makes great products, and usually has solid quality control. Unfortunately they came up short—literally and figuratively—with these pants.

I'm going to echo Christopher P. in saying these pants are WAY too short. I ordered 32" inseam and wore them a couple of times, thinking each time, "these are high waters. These Don't even cover my ankles. They BARELY come down to the tops of my boots."

So I decided to measure the inseam. 29 inches. Cmon, OR. I expected better from you guys. 29 inches isn't even CLOSE to 32 inches.

Now on to my second gripe with these. The pockets are incredibly shallow. I like to keep a clif bar in my pocket when climbing multipitch, and the bar barely fits in these pockets. One one climb, I had the bar actually fall out and thump the rock next to my belayer.

The finish of these pants is great. I love the cut, I love that they are slim fit. They stretch and move with your body well. They make great climbing pants. I just wish they were of adequate length and had useful pockets. Unfortunately both of these are enough for me to say I can't recommend these pants.

    Too short!

Great pants for climbing and hiking, but just too short. The 32 length used to fit about like a 31, but I ordered a new pair and they got even shorter.

If you have Ferrosi pants note that these will be easily an inch shorter when on.

I wish OR would either make a 34 or make these actually 32.

Saving $$$ by not making and stocking a 34 is probably OK if the 32 was not MUCH too short.

      Fantastic And Versatile Pants

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: 30

I've worn these pants on both long summer forest hikes and cold mountain hikes in driving rain. These pants are very comfortable, breathable, block wind, resist water well, and dry quickly. They'll also stylish enough to wear in more casual conditions.

I own both the black and charcoal pairs of these, and both of them run a little lighter in color than the pictures here suggest. Not an issue for me, but other people may care.

The waist does run a little big, despite having ordered the smallest option available (I normally a 30 or 31 for most pants).

As noted in many other reviews, there's some idiosyncrasies related to the various pockets. The non-zippered) front pockets are a bit too shallow for me to trust that anything I put in them wouldn't fall/bounce out, the zippered rear pocket is also a bit shallow, and the zippered thigh pocket seems a bit too deep, to the point where heavier things placed in it bounce around a bit with every step. I was prepared for this from prior reviews I bought my first pair, and actually bought a second pair despite my slight complaints, but if there's an area these pants can be improved it's probably here.

100% satisfied and would buy again

Bought 2 sets to use for a Kilimanjaro trek, only ended up using one! Wore them every day for 7 days straight, changing out in the evenings at the campsite. Extremely comfortable, water resistant, and wind resistant. Sat on a few sharp rocks and slid down from the summit (yay fun!), and these pants stood up to the abuse. Only thing is the two front pockets are rather shallow, as other reviews have pointed out. However, does not impact my satisfaction at all, and see myself wearing them for normal use too. Great buy. Thanks, Outdoor Research!

100% satisfied and would buy again

Which I could show them off more...

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Size Bought: 30

Great pants and very comfortable...I love the stretch and they've treated me very well for climbing. Pocket placement is insanely perfect to be able to access every one easily while wearing my harness.

My only complaint is they run too short if you're tall and have a small waist...I would love to wear these out everyday, but only take them climbing. (I am usually a 28/32 waist/inseam and went with the 30, which makes for an inseam too short for me.)

        How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
        Chest:
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
        Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
        Hip:
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
        Inseam:
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
