Why We Like The Skyward II Pant

When it's our turn to set the skinner and we can feel our body temperature spiking, we’re stoked to have the Skyward II Pant thanks to its breathable, waterproof design. The AscentShell 3L membrane keeps moisture from fresh powder out, while allowing moisture from inside of the pants to easily escape. The 420D scuff guards and wind-resistant fabric make these bomber pants an excellent choice for hot laps at the resort as well.

You will stay Dry All Day!

I went snowboarding in the middle a big snowfall at 49 Degrees North and watched 17 inches come down all the while only wearing my Pertex jacket, Ascentshell pants and Jeans underneath. Zero problems with moisture building up inside or coming in from outside. Very much worth it investing in Outdoor Research gear. Highly recommend to anyone adventurous enough to go out into the storm.

Not waterproof in the slightest

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

These would be the best snowpants I owned if they just TRIED to be semi-waterproof. This is the start of my second season in these pants (because they were not cheap) and I might have to give in and buy a new pair. First day of the season it was snowing and I was drenched from riding the chairlift and skiing -- my backside was drenched through my thermals and the front area on the quads was soaked straight through. Then even the next day, not snowing, the butt was wet from sitting on the chairlift - it was cold, I assume the warmth of my body warming up the lift's chair pad was enough condensation. I wanted to love these. The stretch is unreal, I love the cut. I have plenty of room over my boots, borderline flair pants so not sure I agree with others on that. Love the power strap slots on the snow gaiter, absolutely genius. But come on OR, for a PNW company I thought these would deliver way more on waterproofing. Use areas: East coast skiing from early to late season. Powder and groomers. A few tours out west (ski and bootpack).

Best pants on the market

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great Backcountry pant! Super waterproof, big pockets and a beacon pocket. Big vents with great airflow!

Nice, but very short

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Had to return these, a good 3" too short for me and I currently wear North face bibs that aren't tall size. Seemed good otherwise, zippers worked well. strange location for a beacon pocket, I don't thing having it in crotch pocket would work for me touring.

Comfortable

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I’ve used these pants on a couple tours over the last couple weeks. Overall first impression is they are super comfy and the thigh pockets have a good amount of space. The hip pockets, however, are not very spacious. They mentioned a transceiver pocket which I think both thigh pockets would suffice, but there isn’t a way to attach the device to prevent losing it. Already has a hole in the right thigh, potentially from a branch, had hoped they were more durable. Overall I’ve liked these, just wish they were a tad more keen on the details and durability.

The zippers are garbage.

On my second season with these pants. The zippers are absolute junk. They catch on the pocket lining easily and are really difficult to get unstuck. One of the zippers doesn't close flush. Also, with as terrible as the zippers are, I'm uncomfortable carrying my beacon in my pocket. I haven't tried to get them replaced because I honestly think it's a design flaw and I don't want to deal with another pair.

good, but...

Great pant, that fits as expected on the waist and legs, but they barely fit over my touring boots. I'm expect to wear them out quickly from pulling hard and stretch forcing them over the top of my K2 touring boots. It's a pain while out in the field.

I'll buy another pair

I've used these for 3 seasons now as my total workhorse hardshell bottoms. Splitboarding, ice climbing, mountaineering, resort days, anything I've been able to throw at them in the Wasatch. The huge side vents help manage my temperature (I run very hot) and the ascentshell has stood up to my tendency to thrash around in bushes. I'll probably get another pair of these, if not a bib version.

Some great, some bad

I am a big fan of the fit on these pants. They are comfy, very stretchy, and do not feel like they limit any movement while ski touring. As others have mentioned though, the zippers on these pants are very very tough to use. There have been multiple instances where the zipper has gotten jammed so bad that I have to use pliers when I get home to free my phone or whatever else is stuck inside. Because of this I would never keep my avalanche beacon in the designated "beacon pocket" as I would be nervous to get it stuck when needed. If the zipper issue gets fixed, these are great pants for touring.
