Outdoor Research Shuksan Mitten - Men's
Outdoor ResearchShuksan Mitten - Men's

Avoid the screaming barfies.

Modeled after Outdoor Research's Mt Baker Mitts, the Shuksan Mitten steps up to the plate with a newly redesigned 3DFit technology. And while most companies tout an iteration on the theme of an "anatomically correct pre-curve," the Shuksan's rendition sincerely features a fit that mimics a hinged articulation, meaning the mitt flexes, grips, and finagles as if your actual hand would with a tool in tow. Not only that, but the pre-curve construction allows for higher warmth and loft retention when paired with down-insulated, compatible mitten liners. However, the buck doesn't stop there—the Shuksan is fashioned with a lightweight, breathable, and waterproof Gore-Tex Paclite that ultimately provides wind-and-waterproof protection.

Would this shell fit over the OR transcendent mitt?

Hmmmm... possible, but it might be snug! They were not designed to pair together. Doesn't mean that they can't go together!

Sizing

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I wanted waterproof outerwear rather than the more common waterproof liners 'cause my hands, even though dry, would get cold when the outer surface got soaked. Hopefully these shells will do the trick. Be aware, though, that these mittens are not sized for their intended us, i.e. as a shell to go over gloves or mittens. Using Backcountry's sizing chart and measuring the width of my bare hand, I would have needed a small. I then measured the width of my hand with the double-knit wool mittens I will wear under them. The chart then said I would need an extra large. I usually wear a men's large. I figured these must run big, so I ordered the large. It was very snug over my mittens; these shells are quite narrow. I had to return them and get the extra large, which felt only a little larger than the large. Bottom line, measure your hand with your undermitten or gloves on, then use the chart. If you're in between sizes, order up. As another reviewer said, the thumb is disproportionately long (I have long digits and still there's an extra 1.5" in the thumb of the mitten), but that doesn't impact me for what I need these for. I like the long cuff. The front of the mitten at the wrist is slightly elasticized but not the back side. The end of cuff has adjustable elastic all the way around, but to release pressure on the toggle that serves as a stop for the elastic (hard to describe) takes three hands...or your teeth. Overall, they look well constructed, which they better be for the price. I haven't had a chance to check if they're truly waterproof yet. The warranty says they're warrantied forever but it doesn't say for what. If I wear a hole in them, will they replace them?

Dry Hands, Happy Hands

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have horrible circulation, so having mittens that stay dry and protect my hands while hiking, snowshoeing, and mountaineering is essential. With a good liner glove and hand warmers, these shells perform well in harsh conditions. Spendy, but well worth the price.

How does the Shuksan differ from the Mt Baker mitten?

Best Answer

Hi John, the Shuksan is more of a shell mitten designed for ice climbing whereas the Mt. Baker is an insulated mitten that comes with liners and is great for skiing, snowboarding and alpine touring, If you have questions about these or any other gloves or mittens feel free to reach out to me directly!

To add to Kyle's response, the Mt Baker used to have a "shell only" option, called the Mt Baker Shell Mitt. The Shuksan replaced that in our line, and the Mt Baker Mitt keeps on going with the Primaloft insulated liner gloves inside. Hope that helps!
