Furious foe for a stratovolcano.

Weather can be a daunting adversary on the mountain. So when the elements go nuclear, make sure you're armed to the teeth with Outdoor Research's Furio Jacket. In the wake of Mt. Rainier's relentless and ever shifting storms, this coat protects and deflects the brunt of Mother Nature's harsh whacks and whumphs without prohibiting you from doing a victory-boogie at the summit.

Falling in the footsteps of the earlier Furio prototype, this year's edition is designed to be softer, quieter, and more streamlined than seasons prior. Designed as a hybrid mapped pattern, this piece is outfitted with Gore-Tex Paclite product technology throughout the body and is reinforced with Gore-Tex C-Knit textile on areas of high wear and tear. When you need to batten down the hatches, the Halo Hood fits snugly over a helmet while the TorsoFlo bicep-to-hem side zip ventilation presents easy-to-access aeration when you inner layers start to resemble something of a Roman steambath.

It's just not that great.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Xl

I really want to love this jacket, it's a good jacket but has some significant flaws. First off, the fit on this weird. It's narrow and I had to size up significantly. The half draw string doesn't stop it from riding up if you have a pack on. Next, after use in both rain and snow; the moisture just seems to seep through.

Great Shell

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Medium

I use this shell primarily for backcountry skiing, backpacking, and riding my bike through the rain and snow. It is nice and breathable, packable and pretty darn durable. It has been caught by tree branches while skiing, and has not ripped yet. I have worn it during some pretty wet snow falls and felt completely dry. I am a big fan of the large side vents, because I tend to produce a lot of heat during activities such as skinning, and it has been great to use them to dump that excess heat. The Gor-Tex C-knit is great, nice and quiet, but takes those tree branches like a champ. The fit is only slightly large, but I enjoy it because I usually wear a fleece under it or throw it over a puffy during cold, windy, snowy summit conditions. Honestly, when wearing just a T-shirt under it, I do not feel like I am swimming in the shell.

Would for sure buy this product again.

Between the Furio, Axiom, and Skyward, which would be best for an everyday rain shell? I'm primarily going to use it around town, but would also like it for travel/hiking (lightweight/packable) and winter bike commuting when it really sucks (35 and raining...). Trim-fitting would be good since I run hot, and it's unlikely I'd be wearing more than a button-down or light fleece (R1 style) under it. I have a separate Gore Pro shell for skiing, so I don't need anything with powder skirt or pass pockets, etc.

Best Answer

Without question, the Axiom. When you said light weight / packable, it eliminates the other two... The Furio is built for durability (burly face fabric), and the Skyward has some ski features (inner shove it pockets, huge hood for a helmet), but the Axiom is perfect.

Let me know how it works out for you!

Hi. The lemongrass Furio on your website looks quite different to the one on the OR website. Is it an old photo or are the ones you have in stock the same as the photo on your website? Thanks G.

Great question! The one on the OR site is correct. I will let the content team at Backcountry know that they need to update that image. Thank you!

Versatile Shell

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I've worn this shell skiing several times now and love it!. I've worn it in the near zero temps with a down jacket under it and it was perfect. I've worn it in snowing and slightly wet conditions with a down sweater underneath it and stayed perfectly dry and warm. I like the two front pockets - one for my pass and one for my phone. It's also nice how it zips up above my chin blocking the wind, when combined with my balaclava makes me feel totally protected and warm. Awesome shell for a fair price. The only thing I would change it make the hand openings a little larger to more easily fit over the top of my gloves. Other than that I wouldn't change a thing.

Thanks for the stellar review, Darin!

Happy New Year!

Awesome Hardshell!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

Absolutely love this jacket. Great protection from the elements, very warm (with a long sleeve t shirt it's comfortable down to about 40f. Also fits great with my floodlight puffy underneath making a great combo for colder temps.) yet breathable thanks to the hem to bicep pit zips and the mesh backed chest pockets which act as vents when opened. The hood is huge but thanks to smart design it doesn't limit vision or restrict movement. It's not the lightest shell but the extra weight is worth the durability it adds. I also really like the length which is hits around the upper thigh. Many shells stop at the waist leaving a lot of exposure or go down too far limiting maneuverability. The length of the Furio is perfect! The Gore Tex C Knit fabric which is added to the shoulders, hood, upper arms, and by the waist has a very soft and buttery texture which never feels clammy against the skin and also allows under layers to slide smoothly preventing them from bunching up. Overall this is a very rugged, well designed jacket. Perfect for everything from backcountry snow sports to alpine climbing. Due to the intelligent design and venting features it's a bomber 3 season shell. Another awesome piece of gear from OR. Highly recommended!

Hey Sean, Thanks so much for taking the time to write. This year's version of the Furio also has GoreTex C-Knit in the shoulders for soft, supple and quite movement, with all of the protection of GoreTex. Very Cool!

So glad you like it, and have a great holiday!

Hood Management/Storage and Tight Fit

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

6-0' /172# slim build -purchased L.
Excellent quality but found opening around neck too large permitting cold air infiltration when NOT using hood. With hood up, nice fit with simple one hand adjustment. Found fit in arm pit area slightly too tight with thin layer over base. Returned

Hey Skip, I am sorry that the jacket did not fit your build. This is good feedback and I will be passing it on to the designers at OR to address.

Thank you for writing,
