Outdoor Research Breva Insulated Hooded Parka - Women's
Outdoor ResearchBreva Insulated Hooded Parka - Women's

A long cut and warm insulation mean the Breva looks as good as it feels.

Fight off the cold and wet with style this winter. The Outdoor Research Women's Breva Insulated Hooded Parka combines water- and wind-resistant fabric with Primaloft synthetic insulation to fight off winter's nastiest mood swings.

Outdoor Research built the Breva with a tough, water-resistant, ripstop nylon shell that will hold up for years. The soft nylon lining is also extremely durable, but with a softer side that feels good against your skin. OR then filled the Breva with Primaloft Eco synthetic insulation, which locks in  the heat but won't become useless weight if it soaks through.

The Breva comes fully loaded with convenience features, as well. A full array of pockets, including a zippered Napoleon pocket, two zippered hand pockets,  and an internal media pocket keeps your valuables safe.  A two-way center front zipper with a storm flap holds off the weather and lets you wear the Breva loose at the them or closed all the way down. For the final touch, Outdoor Research added an adjustable, removable storm hood that stows away into the jacket's collar when not in use.

Solid Coat

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

This is a good jacket that has held up to Midwest winters and unpredictable weather. I am able to layer it up with a thick fleece underneath if need be, which is nice. It is lightweight, breathable, and long enough to block out wind. Despite what other reviews about this product say, I have had no problems with the zippers or pockets. The black is a nice color, and goes with everything.

Great review - many thanks Jennifer.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

  • Size Bought: Medium

This jacket is fairly lightweight. Good for running to the store, or for fall weather. The pewter grey is a a warm grey, bordering on brown. I loved the deep hood and the length. It fit a bit tightly through the shoulders and the zipper was not the best quality and tends to stick. The pockets were placed a bit high, which wasn't flattering on me.

Sorry this didn't work out for you Shannon. Hopefully you found something that did!

Great Lighterweight Winter Coat

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XS

Exactly what I was looking for. The extra length is great, without being too long (enough to cover your butt but not reach your knees). The XS sizing for me was perfect, and the jacket is warm enough to get me through a DC winter without being too bulky.

Thank you Leia!

Fit was not as I expected

  • Size Bought: M

I found this coat to be tight across the top and shoulders. I usually always wear a medium but I am returning this coat and have ordered a large. I like the fact that it has an attachable hood. It is light weight but I think that it will be fine for fall & spring weather in Northern Wisconsin.

Unanswered Question

Is this jacket stuffable (like into itself or does it come with a bag)?

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large

My wife wanted a longer warm coat (that covered her butt) for work and I thought the OR Breva fit the bill. She is tall and thin and the large was a little big on her. I thought we might just exchange it for a medium, but then she informed me that the cuffs had no adjustment that would tighten enough around her wrists to keep out the wind unless she wore heavy ski gloves or mittens. We made the decision to return the coat rather than exchange it .

Warm, Chic, and Great Length

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

Just got my Breva Parka and haven't taken it off. It has an incredibly stylish, town-appropriate cut, so I've been wearing it everywhere--out to dinner, leaving the gym, and on some fall hikes. It's soft, comfy, and really warm with snaps and zippers that demonstrate attention to detail. I am really impressed with the Breva, as it's the best OR women's town coat I've owned. Thanks Outdoor Research! You nailed it with this one.

Will this jacket be warm enough to withstand...

Will this jacket be warm enough to withstand a Chicago winter?

Best Answer

With 133g of Primaloft in there it will be pretty darn warm. As to the question of withstanding a Chicago winter, I would say, it depends. If you are out and about walking the town and staying pretty active it will keep you warm since the insulation is holding on to the heat you are generating. Now if you are just going outside and standing around and being relatively sedentary it may not cut it as you are not generating much heat for the jacket to hold on to. For a jacket more in line with the standing around scenario I'd maybe look to a down parka of some sort.
