Outdoor Research Aspire Jacket - Women's
Outdoor ResearchAspire Jacket - Women's

Travel dry, travel light.

Normally, in the world of outdoor clothing, the terms "full-featured" and "lightweight" are mutually exclusive. The Outdoor Research Women's Aspire Gore-Tex Paclite Jacket is the exception to the rule. At just 13 ounces, you'll barely know you're wearing it at all. That is, of course, until the rain starts. The guaranteed waterproof, breathable Gore-Tex Paclite membrane easily shrugs off the storm. Outdoor Research also designed the Aspire with its TorsoFlo venting technology to allow you to dump heat in a hurry without getting soaked. The adjustable hood, cuffs, and hood seal out the weather, and the Aspire stuffs into its own pocket for easy packing once the sun comes out.

  • Packable weather protection for backpacking and hiking
  • Waterproof, breathable Gore-Tex membrane for total storm protection
  • Fully taped seams eliminate waterproof weak spots
  • Hem-to-underarm vents allow air to flow freely while hiking
  • Fixed hood for complete upper body protection
  • Compact design stows away in backpack for easy carrying
  • Adjustable hem and cuffs allow you to seal out drafts and weather
  • Women-specific fit has a bulk-free fit and feel

Amazing Jacket!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large and XL

Okay, so I found out the hard way just how resistant to wind this jacket really is. My key card would not work to let me in work the other morning, and it was in the 20's with a fierce wind blowing. I was so thankful I had this jacket on and so surprised that I didn't feel the wind biting in to me at all. I highly recommend this jacket! As far as sizing goes, I ordered a Large and it was a little snug. I wound up ordering an XL and it fits much better in the body. It is a little big in the arms though. I wound up keeping the Large as well hoping that when I lose a few it will fit better and then I can use the XL to layer. I love this jacket! P.S. I bought the purple and the pink/red color since they were on sale and I am too cheap to pay full price for anything!

Nice jacket, however, returned it as our daughter was looking for a plain red jacket. The shade of red was more orange than I anticipated and did not complement her reddish hair. The zipper also seemed slightly 'sticky'; my daughter tried it only twice, though. The sleeves were long, which was a desirable feature and the cut/design was nice.

Sorry it didn't work out. New zippers may stick at times, but once you cycle them a couple times, they are super smooth. Thank you for the review!

Nice Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this to replace a non-Gore Tex rain jacket to use for a planned trip. The jacket is well constructed, and though I have yet to test it in heavy rain, I’m satisfied with the fit. I can fit a light mid-layer under it & the color is a nice, bright color for gray days. Getting it on sale was an added bonus!

Thanks for the review, Lorraine!

Great Jacket!

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

Love this jacket! Wasn't sure was size I was....some people mentioned it ran big so I ordered an XS and Small - XS fit but a little tight in back/bust area and I knew I wanted to maybe wear a jacket underneath, so I kept the small and its perfect. Worn in some snow/rain and works great!

Thank you Trish! The Aspire knocks it out of the park. All the features you want at a great pricepoint. Thank you for writing!

Great Jacket

Lightweight, comfortable and water resistant. Love this jacket!

Hey Tracy! It's GORE, so it better be waterproof! Really thought, this is a water proof, breathable jacket using Gore technology, so you will be protected. Thank you for writing!

Perfectly dry and oh so snappy

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XS

Maiden voyage was a 50-something degree day in the Azores with wind-driven rain on the coast, followed by a hike through a dripping forest. Not a drop penetrated, the hood fit my small head exactly right. and the commodious pockets kept my fingers warm. Love the slim fit and the Samba color, which makes me easy to find in a crowd. I bought the XS, and there is room beneath for a fleece, which I plan to wear tomorrow in downtown Boston in a 50-knot gale. Couldn't be happier. My Gearhead, Ashleigh, was extremely helpful. Zipper a bit stiff, and I worked it several times prior to wearing, which helped.

Some people said that the waterproof-ness wasn't up to snuff and that they got soaked after a while. Did it really keep you completely dry? I'm on the fence to by this jacket but want to make sure it can handle the consistently rainy weather we have here in Alaska.

Thank you for the review, Stacey. To comment on Kelly's reply, I have heard that on some jackets, they did not stand up to the rain as they should have. But I know that OR guarantees everything 100%. I would feel totally confident buying this jacket. What's great about OR is that you know that if there ever is a problem (and no product is 100% free of problems!), they will take care of you!

I love, love, love this jacket!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: s

I bought it for rain, but decided to wear it skiing also! Wow! windproof, lightweight, lets me layer as i want, 3 zippers unzip upwards to vent - just wow! runs a little large but that makes it perfect for me!

    All Around Excellent

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Small

I initially picked up this jacket to use as a rain jacket for hiking. It has served that purpose very well! It is lightweight and keeps me completely dry during downpours.
My favorite feature is the full-length vents. They really come in handy during on and off storms and keep me from doing the constant jacket on/jacket off shuffle. Oddly enough, they also came in handy during a rainy horseback riding trip. I was able to open the vents and keep the jacket from bunching up.
I typically wear a medium in jackets but found that the small was a better fit for me. The sleeves were too long in the medium.

    Thanks Emily! :-)

This jacket is so great! First off - fit. I got a size small and am generally a small or sometimes a medium because of broader shoulders, but it works great. I also love the good length in the sleeves. Also the pit zips are full length which is a great feature and makes this jacket super versatile!

I've used this jacket tons while camping, climbing, and snowshoeing and it has been great for all of the wind, rain, hail, and snow it has encountered! The Goretex Paclite material is soft to the touch, but withstands the elements very well.

    Highly recommend!

    Thank you Meliss!!

    Nearly A Dream

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Purchased for my girlfriend - here's her review:
"On the fence between giving this jacket 4 or 5 stars. Overall it does everything I need it to and I am very happy with it. I absolutely love the full pit zips. When biking (or really wearing a backpack anytime) it's not easy to take off a jacket if you get too warm, normal pit zips aren't completely sufficient, and unzipping the front you get tons of jacket flapping. This full-zip solves this problem and I am so amazed!
The reason I would be tempted to give it 4 stars is the cut. I'm pretty far from petite (a little bigger on top) and I still found this jacket to fit large and boxy. I do like using rain jackets as a shell in the winter so the extra room is nice for that, but if I were a more petite individual I would probably have to size down or even opt for a different jacket. For me unzipping the side and using the poncho look when around town certainly helps it look more flattering. No regrets on this purchase!"

    Initial Impressions

    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Small

I went with this over an Arc'teryx because I found the design more comfortable, particularly the pit zips, which felt awkward and stiff in the Arc'teryx. The reason the pit zips in the Aspire are more comfortable is because they are not fully taped; I do not know whether this will cause waterproofing issues. I appreciate that OR seems to value function over aesthetics, even in women's clothing. I also appreciate that not all colors are "girl colors."

The selling point of this jacket is the ventilation system, which is the best I've seen (and the price point.) The fit is roomy (if a little boxy) and will allow for layering. The arms are plenty long. The torso is a little short, but not bothersome. If other reviewers had not mentioned torso length as an issue, I wouldn't have even noticed. The fabric is relatively soft. The only feature that strikes me as odd is the way the hood rolls up with a velcro strap. It is a little awkward, and I foresee the velcro getting caught on things. I tried out the stuff sack pocket feature; I don't see myself using it. It didn't seem to save space, and I could see it putting strain on the jacket.

I have not had a chance to truly test out the waterproofing. However, I did plunge a sleeve under a running faucet. The water rolled off completely. When I took my arm out of the water, there was hardly a drop on the jacket. My arm was completely dry.

    Thank you for the review!

    Waterproofing needs rebooting.

The shell looks great on and the zippers are very tight to keep water out.
This purchase was a special treat for me - I've never spent over $200 on a waterproof breathable coat. I bought this raincoat to replace a Marmot (also waterproof and breathable they claimed) that completely failed - I was drenched one hour into a rainy hike. I equated the higher price and OR's quality reputation with 100% success. A year later (after just a handful of wearing) the arms completely soaked through while hiking in the rain. I now rewaterproof it every season and carry a $3.99 poncho to be certain I wont get soaked again. I went to a local well known outfitter and told them what had happened and they said that I needed to buy a $400 Arc teryx to be 100% breathable and waterproof.

Dolores, This was a complete bummer, and shouldnt have happened. OR is happy to replace it because it should never happen, unless the jacket came in contact with DEET, which can disintegrate the laminate. So be careful there.

I am so sorry that this happened to you and I wish I had seen your review sooner. We stand 100% behind our products, always. Infinite Guaranty.

I hope you give OR another shot sometime!

    great not perfect

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Firstly, for me this isn't a "rain jacket"- I would put it more in a category of a lightweight technical shell. It does function as a rainjacket but I think it can do wintery stuff, too if it isn't -20. Pros: purple is badass, light weight means I can use it in more varied conditions, it doesn't have lame zipper lines from contrasting pockets across the chest, and it is Gore-tex. Cons (nothing is perfect): as someone else noted, the wrist elastic is a bit drastic, and the hood is too small (not terribly off/extra small, just not as roomy as I'd like.) I don't buy the 'it doesn't need to be a helmet hood, it isn't that kind of coat' argument- even not wearing a helmet, some of us wear: ponytails, pigtails, locs, buns, natural curls, etc- hair that needs room! Otherwise, I think it is great and while if it was 'just a rainjacket' there would be cheaper options, as a light technical shell, it's a deal.

I got this jacket Monday (three days ago) as a gift and it was great for a light sprinkle and fit amazing. I love how it looks, and the hood stays up in wind. However, today Seattle had a heavy drizzle that got through the coat in the 13 minutes I waited for the train. I’m really bummed since this was going to be my new jacket for hiking, but I’ll probably be returning it.

Mariah, So disappointed this happened to you. There are a few examples I have heard of with this, but OR 100% stands behind their product. Infinite Guaranty. I hope you git a new one!

Don't let this jacket's light weight and compact-ability fool you -- the Aspire is rugged! With a Gore-tex membrane and fully-taped seams, this piece can handle the gnarliest of storms. I like to keep it stashed away in my pack for when the weather gets suddenly hairy, and it also works as a great outer layer for backcountry skiing (or stowed away for an additional layer if it gets a bit chillier than expected). As other reviews mention, the Aspire has a generous fit. I am usually a XS or S in Outdoor Research and went with a XS -- which boasts some room for layering with the OR Deviator Insulated Jacket and a baselayer.

      Weird sizing for petite frame.

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I wasn't sure which size to get, so I ordered both XS and S. (I am 5'3 120 lb) The XS is rather short on the torso, if I raise my arms above my head the bottom of the coat lands just below my belly button, not ideal for a raincoat. Making matters worse, the sleeves are oversized and wide. The small posed a similar issue, being on the bigger end of the spectrum and still short in terms of the typical raincoat. Super bummed I can't keep, because the fabric and design is amazing!

Hi Brooke, yes, the Aspire is more generously sized. May I recommend the Revelation Jacket or the Clairvoyant Jacket for you? OR makes both, and I think you would like the more active fit.

Purchased as gift/Returned Product before using it but initial impressions of the jacket where that its lightweight, good quality material, and nice features (media pocket and vents), Jacket runs a bit on the larger size.

      High Quality Lightweight Rain Jacket

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Extra Large

I love this jacket after wearing it in the Alaskan bush for 3 weeks. In addition to its light weight it is heavier-duty than other light weight rain jackets I've purchased from other high-end companies. I like the long zippers on the sides for extra ventilation. You pay more for this rain jacket but it's well worth it. It does run large. I bought the Extra Large and appreciate its roominess.

      Fantastic

I hvae the mens version of this jacket and I love it. this is a fantastic jacket, fit is great, and has all of the features I could ask for. I bought this one as a gift, because I loved mine so much.
