Why We Like The Exos 38L Backpack

Osprey created the Exos 38 Backpack with a lightweight yet sturdy aluminum frame and the ultralight AirSpeed suspension system so we can transfer slightly larger loads than other minimalist packs. The mesh back panel and ExoForm harness provide comfort under the straps and help circulate air to improve evaporative cooling, so we can comfortably spend extended periods of time with the pack on.

  • Ultralight backpack for short excursions
  • AirSpeed suspension puts air between you and the pack
  • FlapJacket protects gear during lidless use
  • Removable attachment straps shave weight
  • Dual access mesh pockets hold your water bottles
  • Sternum strap adjusts to a comfortable position
  • Front mesh pocket holds a rain jacket for quick access

Lightweight and durable

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I used this pack while hiking the Camino De Santiago last spring and it was perfect. The mesh back panel kept my back cool and dry most of the time which is something I've always had an issue with. I often loaded it with 30 pounds of gear and it carried it comfortably. For how lightweight it is, I never thought it felt flimsy. I also loved the stretchy mesh pocket for carrying my smelly hiking shoes when I chose to wear my sandals instead. It also holds Osprey's 3L hydration pack very well.

Just as advertised and specified

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Good for 2-3 day trips. The 38L limitation will definitely keep you from over packing. Smaller, lighter straps are sound and sufficient. I landed up tucking my tent under the top lid. I don't know how anyone could carry a bear canister with this pack due to its limited capacity. The sternum strap (on size small) seems to ride a little high on me.

Great weekend pack

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Just took this pack on its maiden voyage on the Sisters Loop in Oregon. It was very comfortable to wear. It had plenty of capacity for a weekend trip with lightweight gear. I know others have commented about the lack of hip belt pockets. They would be nice, but I made do with the side pockets on the pack. The rear external pocket was perfect for my down jacket--easy to pull it out while taking a break from hiking. I like how you can take off the top compartment. I didn't use it. I ultimately bought this pack over a HMG pack because of the great price and Osprey's lifetime warranty. I think it would work for a through hike during the summer as well. Looking forward to taking it out again!

James, thank you for a great review!

great pack for longer weekend trips

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Plenty of pockets for gear and storage. The grey color looks awesome and stays fairly clean. The size medium works great for me on my 5'9" 175lb frame. Can't say enough about ospreys airspeed suspension. Definitely keeps you feeling light and breezy

    Thank you Leticia! Great review!

    How to Measure:
For best results, have someone take the measurement for you.
    Torso:
Start at the iliac crest (the top of your hipbone that you can feel like a shelf on the side of your body). From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down. Make sure to keep your back straight while having the measurement taken.
    Hip:
Measure around your hips, at your iliac crest, not your waist.
