Chances are good that you've already experienced the benefits of wool in your baselayers, beanies, and socks, but what you're missing in terms of insulating layers is the Ortovox Women's Piz Bial Jacket. Insulated with Swisswool, the Piz Bial is a light and breathable insulating layer that carries with it all the natural benefits of wool. Since the jacket is insulated with wool, it effectively manages body temperature, so you stay at that just-right temperature, but it is also highly breathable, so you won't get too stuffy when you're hiking a steep section of trail, or making the long approach to the crag. Ortovox made the Piz Bial reversible so you can dress in subtler or wilder styles.

  • Wool insulator designed for alpine touring
  • SwissWool uses merino wool for temperature regulation and breathability
  • Pertex Microlight shell is windproof and water-resistant
  • Reversible style comes in wild or subtle colorways

Great Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I bought this jacket for wearing as a layer under my shell when skiing at the resort. Although the jacket is lightweight it definitely keeps me warm and I love that it is fashionable (not your typical American brand for women that are teal and purple or only one color). Can be worn off the mountain as well as a casual layer.

Warm, light and versatile

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I’ve worn this to winter run, ski (it’s warm for that but I like to be warm) and snow bike. It’s my go to and I don’t fear winter activities with this baby on. The shoulders are roomy but I’d say it fits a little tight in my hips. Worth every penny.

warm for the weight

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M

This layer is surprisingly warm for it's weight. The pockets are roomy and plentiful, a welcome change from traditional womens' gear. The fabric is also highly durable, and zipper construction seems bomb-proof.

The fit is wonderful. I have broad, climber's shoulders and feel very comfortable in a medium. It's also long enough to cover my back when I lean forward, thin enough to layer over, and roomy enough to wear as an outer coat.

Added bonus: euro-style points for the color varieties! When you've had enough of your American friends asking you which way to the Aiguille du Midi, simply turn it inside out and tone it down.

This is a great layer for those really cold days when your feather-light synthetic puff just isn't enough. I give it four stars, though, because it doesn't have a hood.
