Easily the most capable machine in Niner's line, the RIP 9 RDO SLX Fox Complete Mountain Bike blurs the line between aggressive trail machine and brawny enduro sled with its steamrolling 29er wheels paired with 150-millimeters of plush CVA suspension and a long, slacked-out geometry that screams of confidence when the trail gets fast and rowdy. This particular version is kitted out with the workhorse dependability of a Shimano SLX drivetrain, alongside a 160mm Fox 36 Factory Fork for rock-devouring confidence and a RockShox Monarch Plus RC3 shock for luxury car-like plushness out back.
As you'd expect from modern trail bikes pushing towards the longer and slacker end of the riding spectrum, the RIP 9 RDO has a long-reach, roomy cockpit paired with a shorter stem for quick-handling confidence when you're maneuvering around trail obstacles and cleaning tight switchbacks. The 67-degree head tube angle gives the RIP 9 RDO a balanced feel that's both confident at charging bigger lines, yet one that retains nimble handling along sweeping berms and tight sections of trail—both areas where long-travel 29ers are usually lacking in adeptness and skill. Another figure to note is its relatively steep 75.5-degree seat tube angle, which places you in an optimal position to lay power down on tricky climbs.
Another aspect of the latest redesign for the RIP 9 RDO lies in its ability to accept the voluminous rubber of 27.5+ wheels thanks to its Boost rear axle spacing. Increasing the rear axle to 148mm enables the RIP 9 to readily accept massive 2.8in tires should you feel the need to add another wheel size to your riding arsenal. If you're content with the provided 29-inch wheels, you'll find it easily clears a 29 x 2.4in rear tire, which defines the new standard for aggressive trail riders seeking a balance between rolling speed and grip.
Despite all of the changes above, Niner's Race Day Optimized (RDO) construction process remains the same as previous versions and model years. This is a good thing, as Niner's compaction method presses out any excess resin and compacts the carbon down to a precise wall thickness. This gives Niner control over where the carbon material is used, as well as letting the engineers reduce weight where it's not critical for strength or stiffness. Ultimately, you'll find the RIP 9 RDO frame is exceptionally lightweight, resoundingly stiff, and exhibits optimal ride quality—all characteristics desired in an aggressive bike of this caliber.
The Constant Varying Arc (CVA) suspension also remains virtually unchanged, and that's great if you're seeking a bike that's pleasantly efficient while you're pedaling yet surprisingly plush and active while tracking over rocks, roots, and bigger obstacles. CVA's counteracting linkages make this all possible, with the bottom linkage pulling downward to negate squat, while the upper linkage remains free to react to changing terrain contours and bigger impacts. In this particular application, you'll find the RIP 9 RDO's 150 millimeters of CVA travel is more than enough for the burliest trails and steepest descents you can find, smoothing out trail chatter nicely, as well as soaking up the biggest drops and obstacles standing in your path.
