Big warmth designed for big mountains.

Few people are as familiar with bitter-cold alpine temperatures as mountaineering legend Ueli Steck, so the fact that he helped design and develop the Mountain Hardwear Men's Nilas Insualted Bib is really saying something. The windproof AirShield Elite shell fabric puts the brakes on heat-thieving winds while the lofty 850-fill Q-Shield Down boasts the ability to maintain insulating performance even when exposed to moisture.

  • AirShield Elite shell fabric provides total windproof protection and starts breathing instantly so you stay dry and comfortable
  • Baffle construction legs are stuffed with 850-fill Q-Shield Down for toasty warmth
  • Q.Shield Down is treated with a permanent water repellency that allows the down to continue to insulate even when exposed to moisture
  • Stretchy fleece bib adds warmth and allows you to move freely
  • Adjustable suspenders provide a snug fit that keeps the pants riding where they should
  • Watertight center front zip keeps wet conditions out and makes for easy on and off
  • Zippered chest pocket keeps valuables safely stowed
  • Abrasion resistant scuff guards protect the pants from sharp crampons and boots

Kept me warm for a day

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

Took these for a spin in a colorado winter where they weren't needed to check fit and then up on Denali. The design made them a pain to put on with mountaineering boots on so I ended up not using them till summit day. We climbed from 14k to summit during a high wind warning (gusts 40-70mph at 17k) and these guys kept me pretty cozy through the long day. However on our return to camp I found several small holes on the hips, butt, and thighs which had leaked all of the down from inside the pant leaving it pretty much useless after that climb. Not sure how it happened but I guess that on the few times we hide behind rock formations to get out of the wind the pants tore rubbing against the rock. Which is still weird since my climbing partner had zero such tears on his puffys and my top had none as well. Didn't do any sitting or climbing on the rock so I'm rather disappointed how frail they turned out to be from just leaning up against it, not to mention only getting a day of use out of pants that cost half a grand. Never again.

Unanswered Question

Does anyone know how much down is in these pants? i..e What is the amount of down in grams or ounces? I'm trying to figure out if they are warmer than my current pants and since I live in rural Alaska, I can't just go to a store and find out!

How to Measure:
All measurements correspond to equivalent body measurements, not the dimensions of the garment. For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Chest:
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Sleeve:
Measure from the center of your back to your wrist with arms held out.
Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Hip:
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Inseam:
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
