Why We Like The Hardwear AP Pant

The Mountain Hardwear Men's Hardwear AP Pant tackles our bike commutes through the city, afternoon bouldering sessions, impromptu post-work nachos with our coworkers, and everything in between. Reflective strips under the cuff increase visibility on twilight bike rides home from the brewery, crag, or office, and we love the roll-up snap closure on the hem that keeps our pants from getting caught in the crankset.

  • Do-anything, go-anywhere pants
  • Classic silhouette maintains a dapper look
  • Durable and stretchy fabric assures mobility
  • Reflective details offer a hint of visibility
  • Multiple pockets keep necessities organized

Good pants

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 38/32

I like the pants, fit pretty true to size. My only issue is they feel tight in the thighs. Love the pants, great fit around waist and legs, just tight in the thigh area.

Started out great

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

These pants look great, fit great, and are stretchy.

Unfortunately, they fade as soon as you wash them, the front button lost it's black finish nearly immediately. Finally, they are not durable for use as climbing pants. Ive put a lot of holes in them already despite only using them a few times.

They are better for commuting, and maybe hitting the gym but not the crag.

Not quite a Classic Fit

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Size Bought: 28

I would definitely put these in the slim/straight pant category. I've been trying to find a pair of pants for my boyfriend that are a relaxed or classic fit and more athletic and these fit him like skinny pants. Looked straight out of a Fall Out Boy music video. For reference, he is 5'7", 155lb, 28" waist and athletic. The waist and hips fit him perfectly, so it was not the size. Also, Black Sage is much more green than black.

ROTTEN FABRIC in <6 months

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 28 X 32

The fabric collects lint unlike any clothing item I have ever owned. The only thing I know that collects lint better is a commercial lint roller. But more critically, after less than 6 months of owning the pants, they literally fell apart. First, a large hole formed near a pocket, where the fabric just disintegrated. Next, a pocket corner seam split. Further, the black paint of the waist button rapidly wore off. Ultimately, despite washing these pants in gentle cycle along with my woolen clothing and air-drying them, in under 6 months the fabric was completely rotten, such that a hole could be torn into the fabric with moderate pressure of a thumb, and the fabric could easily be shredded with a mild strength grip-and-pull. By far the worst experience I have ever had with any product marketed to "outdoor" enthusiasts.

ROTTEN FABRIC in <6 months

  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: 32x30

Not many people wrote here about the waist sizing. I ordered a 32x30 after knowing ALL of my other pants that are that size fit perfect. Seriously, maybe they put the wrong label on these because they seem more like 34x30. Cant even wear without a belt as they will slide down my legs.

where's the mountain? the hardwear?

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 32/32

Love the look. Love the fit. But for something with a nice, cool fabric, and for something that says "Mountain" and "Hardwear" on it, these things lasted less than 3 months, of just going to work mostly, maybe bending down to pick something I dropped, went climbing one time. My Prana Brions and Zions have 3-4 years on them before they got a hole. The fit of the Pranas isn't as cool but for the price I'll take the Brions. More breathability, more durability, lifetime warranty. Sorry Mountain Hardwear, but unless you are sending me a free pair this is my first and my last foray into your brand. I'll stick to Arc'teryx for my climbing/skiing/camping gear and Prana/Patagonia for my work week wear.

So sorry these didn't work out for you Preston! Feel free to email me at and we can find a solution for you!

I like them

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 38 x 32

A good part of the arsenal. I’ve traveled in them and rode in them. They wash up well and are comfortable. They are cut for lean guys so if you’re a little bit older size up.

Look great, ultra fragile

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 32

I will start by saying that these pants fit great and look just as good with a button down at work as with a puffy at the crag. However, they have fallen apart disappointingly quickly. I've had these for eight months and just put my third colossal hole in them from seemingly mundane tasks. One came from grazing a fence, and another from catching the door of my truck. Admittedly I don't live in a childproofed box, but these pants are so so thin that catching the smallest nick on anything will tear huge L-shaped holes. I have carhartts that I wear when doing anything rough; the damage to these pants has been from everyday use.

Literally all purpose!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

  • Size Bought: 31x30

These are some serious all purpose, do anything pants! Great for any outdoor activity and look nice enough to wear around town. Fit is perfect. 10/10!

Love the fit; I beat them up

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I've got 3 pair and wear them for all outdoor activities (fish, climb, hike, etc) as well as indoor climbing. I've been rotating between 2 pair, since I blew the crotch out of one pair and can no longer repair them. They last a long time with pretty hard abuse. I probably wear a pair out in 8 months to a year and try to repair if rocks (or plastic holds) wear the knees thin. The crotch issue in the one was a bummer, as that area is hard to patch or sew up based on the material of the pants. I guess I just have to toss them, but they got a good year of abuse. Bottom line is I wanted a nice fitting, not baggy, good looking pants to be active in, and they've been killer. I just hope they dont get discontinued. I feel the size is pretty true. I'm a 32/32 in Levis 511 and wear the same size here.

Runs long

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Size Bought: 32/32

Bought a 32/32 and the pants drape down and under my foot when not wearing shoes. Overall, nice pair of pants but the sizing (length) is way off

  • Size Bought: 32x32

Was really excited about these pants. They were a Christmas gift for my husband. When received, the pants fit great in the waist, but too close fitting throughout the leg. It was like wearing tights. The material was great and the color, but the close fit was too much. Can't say it was too tight, just form fitting. Felt the pictures and description was miss leading for these. If looking for a "Hipster" look, these are the pants. Just don't wear underwear cause you'll see the lines.

My wardrobe has to be functional and look some what stylish. These are great for dad duties, chores, hiking, and casual commuting. I would have like a bit more taper at the leg though. If you don’t roll up your drive side pant leg it’s going to get chain gunk on it.,

These pants are so much more than I expected! The cut is absolutely perfect. I'm fairly tall and thin and have a hard time finding pants that fit, but Mountain Hardware knocked it out the the park with these. The attention to detail is amazing... Well thought out pockets, reflector, snaps for rolling up the cuffs, and just a small amount of stretch. Truly an all purpose pant I could see myself wearing daily. Only negative is they do seem to attract lint!

    Perfect fit

These are the best fitting active pant that I've been able to find. Only complaint is that mine were a bit long when they came in, even though I had ordered a 32' inseam which fits me well in every other pant.

      Good color too!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 30/32

These are the pants that you don't feel like you need to change out of at the end of your hike or climb. Soft, stretchy fabric that still feels sturdy, with a fashionable cut. I'd wear these anywhere. One downside of the fabric is that it clings on to dirt, etc which necessarily a bad thing, but if you have cats or dogs I would advise choosing a color other than black!

      Good Pants For Sure!!!

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 34/30

Bought these for my BF. He really likes them. He was stoked on a slimmer fitting pant, that wasn't all "skinny jeaned out" lol. Bonus-reflective material for your late night rides home from the pub.

      Comfort Anywhere Anytime

Like most 20 something males, when you find a pair of pants I like, I wear them everyday. I've worn these pants lounging around the house, long days in car, and on every big day on the rock or trail. I am wearing them right now. The comfort and the quality haven't wavered a bit despite the constant wear and tear. Need a reliable pant for all kinds of outdoor sports, the Mountain Hardwear AP Pant is for you!

      Great All-Arounders

      • Size Bought: 33x32

I just picked up a couple pairs of these after hearing so many good things about them. The fit is off the charts on these pants, some of the best fitting pants I've ever owned. They are really well thought out as well. The roll up with button closure is a great little feature. They would be nice for the commuter, since they do have those reflective straps on the underside as well. The pockets are easy access and have zippers on the back as well as a velcro phone pocket.

The material is super comfy to wear, you won't want to take these off. They have an ever so slight amount of stretch which is really nice. I wore them for a few days camping and they held up excellently. They are not the most breathable and not the most technical, but for an all-around do everything pant, these are my new favorites.

Oh, also, I did wear them on a wet hike up in Olympic and they did get pretty wet. To be fair, it was a rainforest and everything was wet, so I wasn't too surprised. They aren't quick drying, but they dried out soon enough. Anyways, point being, they're not waterproof and they don't really seem to be water resistant either, so if that's what you're after, then these might not be your best bet. Other than that some of the best pants I've had.

Lastly, double thumbs up for odd waist sizes!

Not designed for serious outdoor use

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: 32 long

I’ve had these pants for six months now and really wanted to like them, but frankly they are not really good at anything. I've used these extensively - climbing in them 3-4 times a week since i've owned them. I loved the fit in the waist/legs, but that’s about all. Bought them for rock climbing and backpacking.

First off, the rise/crotch is way too small to be a climbing pant. I’ve never had climbing pants that cause me so many problems in the “gentleman’s area” as these have, but they do - a lot. Secondly, now that it is finally summer in Northern New England, I wore them for the first time on a long hike (12 miles) yesterday. These don’t wick at all - they soak up sweat and water and hold it.

When I got home I checked what they were made of - 75% cotton?! Who makes “technical” pants out of mostly cotton? That just spells hypothermia in the White Mountains. Definitely my fault for not noticing that 6 months ago, but reviews were good....

So yeah, these are good for walking around town and looking like you are outdoorsy, but they are terrible for anything where you actually sweat, get mud, or water on you. Generally love Mountain Hardware, but these are a big miss.

Graham. Sorry to hear about your experience. Thanks for being a Hardwear Fan. This pant pretty much says it in the name AP stands for All-Purpose and the thinking of this pant when we designed was to be good at everything so it's not a specialist... It's good for work, commute, hiking, biking, climbing, dating, etc. Kind of the utility pant that does it all. It's also cotton and nylon so it's very comfortable and doesn't look like you just came off the crag or the backcountry when you wear it around town. From what I read from your review you were looking for more of a specialist pant for Climbing/hiking... Probably want a gusseted crotch, fully nylon, lots of stretch. I would look at the Chockstone Hike pant. It says "Hike" but its just as adept at climb as well. Let me know if I can do anything for you and look next spring for our new pant called the "logan Canyon" pant which is taking the AP and giving you a true specialized hike/climb pant that I am really excited about.

Graham I'm buying them for warm dry weather use. I'd NEVER buy clothes without checking the fabric content. If I wanted wet cold pants Id buy all synthetic. Youre welcome.

      How to Measure:
All measurements correspond to equivalent body measurements, not the dimensions of the garment. For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Measure from the center of your back to your wrist with arms held out.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
