Climbing is only half the battle.

Let the Millet Men's Friction Approach Shoe keep your foot prime and ready for the crag. Millet constructed the Friction's low-cut upper out of reinforced leather to keep it surprisingly durable for how lightweight it is. The Hygiene footbed is quick to dry and antimicrobial so the Friction won't end up smelling like your old pair of climbing shoes, and the dual-density EVA midsole absorbs shock and offers all the comfortable support you need to make it to the crag and back without an aching foot. A rubber rand at the toe and heel as well as reinforced rubber at the toe keep this shoe strong for many years. Millet equipped this approach shoe with partially recycled Vibram EcoStep for excellent traction over slabby, slippery surfaces, and Climbing Zone places extra rubber over the toe to ensure proper grip on steep approaches.

Comfortably Wide

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 9.5 (fits my E foot )

I noticed the reviews saying these ran a little on the wide side and took a chance that they would work with my 9.5 E feet. I could not be more pleased with the fit. As far as th shoe itself, I was looking for versatility, usable for light hiking, mountain biking, as well as being ok to drive in and good for casual wear around town. The shoe performs amazingly well as an all-around, three season shoe.

Great shoe. Comfortable and fits to size. No problem with the
heel cup, over time it could become damaged by jamming the
foot into the shoe without loosening the laces. The sole seemed slick on the concrete, but once on the trail you could feel the grip. No problems hiking with a heavy load
on wet rock.

Friction Addiction

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 8

The Millet Friction approach shoe is a great all around outdoor shoe. From hiking to scrambling it tackles various terrain with ease. Lots of nice features and materials make this a shoe that will get you where you want to go and back again.

Fit: This shoe fit a little wide on me. I typically wear a size 8 and that is the size I ordered. The length was perfect, but the shoe was a little wide. I do have rather narrow feet, so it might not be an issue for most. As other reviews have pointed out the heel cup is a little big. I couldn't get the shoe adjusted so that my heel was locked in as well as I would have liked.

Features: Compared to other approach shoes I have tried, the soles on these are rather substantial. The Vibram sole offers excellent traction. The smooth climbing zone near the toe provides a sharp edge for precise toe placement. The leather upper and rubberized toe and heel caps look great and provide excellent protection and durability. The laces run almost all the way to the end of the shoe. This makes it easy to fine tune adjustment of the fit.

Performance: I took the shoes out of box and went immediately for a 4 mile hike. No problems with blisters or hot spots. I did have to stop a couple of times at the beginning of the hike to adjust the laces to prevent my feet from sliding around in the shoes. The climbing zone provides excellent traction on rock and really helps out with semi-technical climbing/scrambling. Traction on loose and soft surfaces from the deep lugs of the Vibram sole is great.

The sole is rather stiff, which makes long miles on the approach easy and keeps your feet fresh. I did some overnight backpacking with these and even with a pack they hiked well. I wouldn't be afraid to take them on an extended backpacking trip as I prefer a low cut shoe.

Pros: Substantial sole provides a sure grip and lots of support.

Stiff sole makes long hikes easy on the feet.

High quality materials all around.

I think they look great, but looks are always subjective.

Price - For me these may be a little expensive. If they hold up well and they look like they will they would be worth the investment.

Not waterproof - For the extra $30 I would be tempted to get the Millet Friction GTX to get the Gore-Tex if you are concerned about wet feet.

Heavy - I am a fan of light shoes. These shoes offer great protection and an amazing sole. Those both come at a compromise of a higher weight. These shoes aren't excessively heavy, but heavier than the Evolv Cruzers that I am used to wearing.

Big heel cup - While it may work for some people I felt like my heel was never as secure as I would have liked.

The Millet Friction is a great approach shoe. Not only that, I feel like it makes an excellent hiking and light backpacking shoe. The materials and construction are excellent. These shoes offer a ton of support and traction. This allows you to enjoy the scenery more and concentrate less on watching where you are stepping. Overall a great shoe. A few minor issues due to fit, but if they hold up over the long run I would recommend them.

Quality shoes

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 10.5

The quality is great. Had about 2 months, but I think they will last a long time. Comfort is good, but better with new insoles. The insoles provided aren't much. They are wide, which is what I was hoping. A 10.5 fit like a 10.5 wide. Happy with the purchase....only complaints would be the insoles and the tongue feels like it starts to sag.

Good design - not for the narrow foot

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

I had high hope for this shoe because it's one of the very few that isn't made up of dozens of useless pieces of material and it looks like it's made right (Romania rather than China). I returned for a pair of Scarpas only because the heel in particular was way too roomy for my slightly narrow foot - even when I ordered a half size down.
