Maxxis Ardent Race Tire - 27.5

The original Ardent tire is a tough, versatile Maxxis classic, but the new Ardent Race 27.5in Tire takes a good thing and makes it even better. By condensing the tread and making the knobs shallower, Maxxis made the Ardent Race considerably faster without seriously reducing grip, but still kept the same ramped central knobs and burlier shoulder knobs for plenty of traction in the corners, especially in reasonably firm conditions. The Ardent Race also uses Maxxis' 3C Maxx Speed rubber compound, which blends three different rubbers to provide the optimal blend of durability, speed, and grip. Speaking of durability, the Ardent Race is available with EXO sidewall protection for increased burliness, if you're worried about tearing up your tires in tough terrain. Both EXO and non-EXO versions also utilize a super-supple 120 thread-per-inch casing, which smooths out rough trails and keeps you connected to the trail for ultimate control.

great for a light and sturdy XC tire

For the weight, the tread and grip is pretty great. If you're looking for a solid lighter weight XC tire this will definitely do the trick. I wouldn't recommend it if you're a bullish rider looking to save weight on a Trail or AM bike since it's not very durable on the bigger hits.

Mike, your review was helpful. What tire would you recommend for a trail/AM bike to save weight over the traditional Maxxis Ardent? I was considering the Ardent Race but that doesn't seem to be the case according to your review. I don't hit big drops/jumps but lots of rock gardens and some steep shale rock hills in New York state.

I normally ride the High Roller 2 for my rear tire , but needed a tire with smaller knobs for a 50 mile ride. The tires were excellent on the double track as they had less resistance and allowed for more rolling.
