Getting dressed to go on a ride during the shoulder-seasons can be notoriously difficult, and we often find ourselves deciding on kit and heading outside, only to stand in the driveway for a few minutes then go inside and change our outfit. Mavic's Cosmic Elite Men's Bib Knickers aim to address the difficulties of those in-between days of the in-between seasons—the days when the sky says summer but the temperature disagrees.
Mavic trusts three separate fabrics to construct the Cosmic Elites, two of which rely on a supportive, stabilizing blend of nylon and elastane with the third addressing moisture transfer with a breathable polyester blend. With this combination, the knickers will be able to keep you warm during the chilly first few miles of a Saturday morning ride without causing you to overheat once the sun hits the pavement and your body starts to warm up. Flatlock seaming throughout alleviates any worry of chafing, awhile Exo Grip leg grippers help gently hold the leg cuffs in-place so you aren't distracted from a climb by wandering hemlines.
For long-ride comfort, Mavic graces the Cosmic Elites with its Ergo 3D insert, a multi-layer, multi-density chamois that aims to provide the right blend of plush support and relief where you need it, moving with you in the saddle for an unobtrusive fit. Unobtrusive is also a goal of the bib strap design, which features airy mesh fabric cut in a minimal silhouette that aims to lie subtly underneath a jersey, wicking moisture away from your skin and providing support without detracting from your ride quality

Yellow Leg Band
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
- Fit: True to size
I realized the minute I opened the package that I had become an Assos snob through the last few seasons. The padding looks like that from a basic no-name brand that I wore as a teenager. The photo shown by Comp Cyclist does not show the bright yellow leg band (one side only, a la Rapha copy). I have not worn them due to this surprised color splash feature alone and have returned them for the Assos knickers. Once again, one gets what one pays for. If I were to keep them, i would move up to the medium (5'5", 151 pounds).
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
First of all, sizing: the product chart is spot on. They run large and are pretty much American, not European, sizing. I'm 5'9, 155 lbs and I am routinely large in Giordana and Assos, but these in small fit like a glove.
As far as the weather, they are indeed perfect for when you start out on a chilly morning and the temperature rises as you ride. I found them perfect when the temperature was 43 degrees when I took off, and rose to 67 after a few hours.
The chamois is quite good as well. I'd rate is just below Assos (any) and Giordana FRC.
Overall, a great product from Mavic.
Warmer Temp Knickers
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: Large
These are well constructed knickers but just suprising that there are mesh type fabric panels on the outer thighs. Great for transition seasons or cool mornings that will warm up later. But just know they are probably not for getting by when full tights would also serve.
