Playing on cold mountains.

The Marmot Men's Variant Insulated Jacket balances performance with warmth for passionate alpinists with skis on their feet or ice axes in their hands. This performance-driven insulator uses Thermal R in the body to stay warm even if it gets wet, which would be a challenge since Marmot treated the body with a DWR treatment. Stretch fleece adds warmth and mobility to the sleeves and back. Marmot designed the jacket with a slimming athletic fit that's easy to layer over and move in. A zippered internal pocket helps prevent GPS devices from losing battery life in frigid weather, and the handwarmer pockets live up to their name.

  • Performance-driven insulator for ski touring and alpine climbing
  • Thermal R insulation stays warm even if it gets wet
  • Stretch fleece back and sleeves assures freedom of movement
  • Slim athletic fit accommodates layers without hindering mobility
  • Elastic bound hem and thumbhole cuffs secure fit
  • Zippered internal and handwarmer pockets store essentials

Great Mid-layer

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Size Bought: M

This was my first piece I intentionally sought for snowboarding. So far, I like it. It's well designed, versatile, and despite a slight issue with sizing/fit, I look forward to wearing this jacket in varying activities/conditions.

Pros:

The jacket does a great job keeping me warm, and it's light as well. I used to wear a fleece as my mid-layer, but this jacket is warmer and lighter! I've been wearing a base layer, flannel, this jacket, and a simple NF raincoat/windbreaker in 0-15 F weather snowboarding and I haven't gotten cold since I begun wearing this. Thumb holes are nice, and the sleeves and back aren't restricting at all.

I tried wearing this jogging, and I noticed how easily the wind could get through the sleeves and back, while the front is nice and toasty. That is somewhat expected, and it actually helps wick moisture and prevents me from overheating when layered/worn appropriately.

Cons:

It would be nice if the section of synthetic down in the front were a bit wider. I'm also not sure if it's an issue of an athletic fit or not, but the jacket is snug around my chest, but a bit loose around my stomach. I did get a size small, but I had to go a size up because of my chest/shoulders. (Note: I haven't had such a sizing issue in a while).

Great Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

This is the first insulation jacket I've had. That said, it was great. I used it for a skiing weekend in California. It kept me nice and warm but not too hot (base was around 35 degF and summit was 25 degF). I would definitely recommend it. I am 6'4", 200 lb with a long torso and a large fit very well.
Unfortunately, we went out the last night of the trip and someone decided to steal it after I took it off and laid it on a chair. I was very upset :(

Great Jacket!!

Perfect for winter outside activities! It really fits great! It has a look and style that I really like. I feel that it was well worth the money that I paid for it. I would recommend this jacket to any one.

    Great Active Piece

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

I purchased this item as an xmas gift for an avid skier and runner. The gift was a hit and has been getting plenty of use since. A little warm for running most days, but great for the chillier temps seen this winter. He primarily has been using this piece for layering on the slopes and it has been working out wonderfully. Nice tailored fit, light weight, easy to move in (not restricting), with functional storage pockets. Well worth considering if you are seeking a warmer and functional layer for your ski/running gear.

    one of my favorite pieces

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

Every time I head into the mountains no matter the season I bring this jacket. It can do any job you ask of it. It layers well and works great on it's own. I wear this and a t-shirt under my trail running vest during the winter. As a plus it gets compliments every time I wear into town.

    Great jacket

Good, light, mid-layer piece to ad some insulation, or it's great on it's own as an active or even casual piece.

      Great winter running jacket

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
      • Fit: True to size

I bought this for my son who runs religiously rain, snow or shine. He has worn it on heavy snow days and says it keeps him dry and warm. Great layering or winter activity jacket!

      Can I marry a jacket?

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

Initially purchased as a base-layer for skiing, this has since become a more casual daily jacket for me. I love the longer sleeves and the thumb hole for powder days, I don't have to worry as much getting snow all up under my gloves. Small internal chest pocket for storing cash or extra bubble gum; the essentials. My only complaint is that I got a medium, and a small would have fit me better, whereas I like tighter clothing. Perfect for fall or spring weather, or as a base to put your technical shell over. Hit me up with questions!

      Stylish!!!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: XL

Perfect mid layer. Nice comfortable fit as well. Like it so much im going to buy another one in a different color. 🖒

      Perfect mid layer

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This jacket rules. My go to for touring and its a bit long which I like. Highly recommended!

      Favourite layering piece

This is my favourite layering piece by a mile. Tragically, it used to have a perfect, tight but brilliant hood. Why have they stopped this? Mine is a few years old now but goes with me skiing, climbing, mountaineering and trekking in the Himalaya. It's lost it's warmth has the down has been worn out and I'm trying to replace the jacket but won't get it again without the hood, seems pointless as it is so technical?!

        Incredible Jacket!!!!

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: Large

Marmot has overtaken Patagonia as my favorite active wear brand based in no small part to the Variant Jacket. Completely versatile; I have worn the jacket when skiing as well as many rounds on the golf course. It is beyond comfortable, material is highly breathable yet keeps you warm, and the styling on the jacket has elicited numerous compliments from people walking by. I highly recommend this jacket!!!! You won't be disappointed.

        Active Midlayer

This jacket is a good midlayer for high output activities. It is basically a base layer weight fabric with extra insulation on the front. It breaths very well and is very comfortable and stretchy. I used it a lot for cold weather running.

          Long enough for tall folks

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times
          • Fit: True to size
          • Size Bought: Large

I normally have to rely on Eddie Bauer for my clothes because they have Tall specific sizing. However, I needed a jacket like this one for skate skiing and couldn't find anything that would work in a tall. Luckily, Marmot has sleeves long enough and the body fits great too. This is a great jacket for any high intensity cold weather activity.

          great jacket

great fit, it works perfectly as a second layer or below another jacket. great buy.

          How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
          Chest:
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
          Neck:
Measure around the thickest part of your neck, holding tape loosely.
          Sleeve:
Measure from the center of your back to your wrist with arms held out.
          Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
          Hip:
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
          Inseam:
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
