Expedition Mitten

The second warmest mitten that Marmot has on offer, the Expedition Mitt is developed for high-altitude pursuits on your skis or snowboard. This technical gauntlet employs waterproof breathable fabric and synthetic insulation to create a cozy, on-route sleeping bag for your digits. PrimaLoft One insulation features ultra-fine synthetic fibers that trap warmth, provide water resistance, and survive repeated compressions. Meanwhile, the DriClime Bi-Component lining wicks moisture away from your skin so your digits stay comfortable through each and every turn.

  • A toasty warm mitten for the coldest ski days of the year
  • Waterproof, breathable fabric keeps your hands dry and comfortable
  • Synthetic insulation guarantees warmth even in damp conditions
  • Reinforced palm stands up to use and abuse on the ski hill
  • Wrist strap and gauntlet drawcord cinch out the snow and cold
  • Safety leash included for extra security during transitions
  • Nose wipe offers a smooth touch when the day is bitter cold and dry

Nice mitten

I've skied with these a couple of times in cold weather. I always use inserts with mittens but some I've had in the past still weren't warm. Not the case with these, very warm and comfortable, easy on and off if you have to use your fingers. The only negative I have is the palm material is too slick and items can slip out of your hand without a tight grip.

Nice and Warm, OK for skiing

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought these primarily for skiing. They are very warm, no complaints with that. They are OK for pole grip, but your grip feels slightly slippery for lack of a better description. The fit runs a bit large. I often need to buy XL for gloves and mittens, but a Large fit me fine.

    The best mitten!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great overall mitten, but like other reviews state they run slightly large. They are perfect for snowboarding. The long cuff keeps the snow out and the insulation keeps your hands toasty!

    OVEN

These mitts are definitely warm, especially if your hands aren't naturally cold. I think these will function as my gloves for super cold days on the mountain. I am yet to find out how waterproof they are, but I plan on getting something else for days that I don't need to worry about my hands freezing. Overall they are a high quality product and I don't have any complaints. Now it just needs to start snowing.

      Digit Savers!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

My first time using these was on a hike in the Adirondacks, with -26F temperatures (-30 to -40 with the windchill). My fingers were getting dangerously cold, and no combination of gloves was helping to warm them. Very shortly after putting these mittens on, my hands and fingers quickly began to warm up, and were protected from the severe cold for the remainder of the day. They were not a cheap investment, but considering the real-world functionality and materials used, obviously worth it. Consider me a believer!

Bomber at -30 F wind chills

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These gloves performed perfectly in absolutely frigid conditions. I used them for a Mt Washington climb a few weeks ago and my fingers were nice and toasty. I’d say that there do run large (I’m 6’1) and the XL is a little big. The dexterity isn’t great but it’s about right for a mitten. If you want a reasonably priced mitten that will keep you warm on breaks, this a good choice.

      Very warm

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

First time I have used mittens and they have been great in these bitter cold days in the northeast. It was -20F the other day with the wind and i used a light glove liner with a hand warmer and I never felt any cold. The gloves are a little slippery for holding poles, but that might just be my adjustment to a mitten. I really like how high they come up on my forearm.

      Extremely Warm!

It is hard to find the insulation weight for these mittens anywhere so I wanted to share it for anyone trying to compare mittens. On the back of hand the mittens have 20 oz (560 grams) Primaloft One Insulation while the palm uses 10 oz (280 grams) of Primaloft One.

If you have any questions regarding gloves and mittens, or need assistance with any other gear needs please feel free to shoot me an email at sarruabarrena@backcountry.com, or call me on my direct number: 801-204-4679.

This is not correct. This would make each glove over 1lb.

        Cold hands

Very good product when I got my mitts and the next day it was 17 degrees wind chill 9 I was good my hands get very cold real easy I had frostbite in my hand and I could not find gloves or mittens that would keep my hands warm but these mittens did the job.

          Runs large

          • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Buy a size smaller. They run large. Great glove though

          Great

          • Fit: True to size
          • Size Bought: Medium

Primaloft Gold is the best synthetic insulation, and these have it. These are not over-padded, so the dexterity is good for mittens. The fabric is great. The fit is great. It has a nose-wipe. It has one-handed draw-strings. I can't imagine better unless you wanted a removable liner., in which case there is the OR or the Marmot 8000.

Some people say these run large. I have a size 8 hand, and ordered a medium. I am 5'8 and 144 lbs and do not have large hands. They fit me perfectly, so I claim these do not run large, but are true to size. My OR Adrenaline mittens ran small, and I had to get large in those. The OR large is like these Marmot in medium.

I am able to comfortably wear Thermasilk or Serius liners in them, but my not very thick Black Diamond fleece gloves won't fit in. If I wanted to wear real gloves inside them, I could have ordered a size up.

I used my thermal camera and put ice blocks inside these (see photo on the right), the OR Adrenaline (middle), and Marmot gloves (left). These had significantly less cold transmission.

          Great

Most memorable review ever! Loved the thermal cam treatment. Nice. Thanks.

          Unanswered Question

What is the weight of primaloft one in the palm and back of this mitt?

Warm and soft but runs large

          • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
          • Fit: Runs large
          • Size Bought: Small

Great mittens overall but buy a size smaller. I usually wear M in women's , S in unisex/ men, and S was huge on me. We'll see how XS fits.

          Unanswered Question

How will these work with snow skiing? I understand that they have a lack of dexterity, but I really need the warmth because my hands fun very cold. Gloves just aren't providing me with enough warmth. I need something that will keep my hands warm for an extended period of time and I'm just curious if these will perform well. Please let me know. Thank you!

          Warm, soft; great gloves

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times
          • Fit: Runs large
          • Size Bought: small

I initially tried the Black Diamond Mercury Mits, and found the divided index finger uncomfortable. I returned them, and purchased these instead. They run large, so I exchanged a medium for a small (my hand measures 7in from the tip of my middle finger to where my wrist begins). These gloves are soft, comfortable, and so warm!
My hands run cold, and these gloves keep my fingers warm into the single digits. I have not taken them into the negative F range, but I had toasty hands/fingers with activity at around 8F.

          Warm n comfy

Warm and comfortable. Well made. My medium seems to be more like a large in Columbia or North Face terms

            These babies are money!

these babies are money! Some people think it's not cool to ski in mittens but I don't care, I'm all about keep the hands warm, ya know?

              Warm and fluffy

              • Familiarity: I've used it several times
              • Fit: True to size
              • Size Bought: medium

These mittens are great for super warmth and insulation from the bitter sub-zero cold. I use these more than I probably should but my fingers get cold if I wear gloves! Love these but you have to be prepared to be a bit dexteriously immobile. It’s a risk I am willing to take here.

TOO HOT for Sothern California winters

              • Familiarity: I've used it several times
              • Fit: Runs large
              • Size Bought: Medium

Easy to put on (5 stars)
Wish the wrist straps had rubber ends so I can pull it with ease but it isn't (3 stars).
Too Hot for Cali, I mean that's what the mitts are for to keep you warm right? So what can i complain about.. (5 Stars)
No mobility, I mean their mitts but it's too puffy (4 Stars)
Great overall mitts, but I personally bought the wrong ones.
The non-rubber ends of the wrist strap really bugs.

Bought a Large, returned it for a Medium
