The zipper is RIDICULOUS. I only wish I had paid more attention to other reviews which mention zipper problems. I purchased this coat for my college aged daughter. She started complaining upon first wearing it that sometimes it zipped, sometimes it didn't. I told her to just be careful, line it up correctly, take her time, etc. She continued to complain many days per week. Recently, in a -4 degree cold snap, she called me on her way to class with an unzipped coat because she had already spent 15 minutes trying to zip it and couldn't try any longer or she would be late. At this point I contacted BackCountry. They were most helpful but sent me to Marmot as Marmot handles their own warranty. Today, because my daughter is once again walking to class in freezing temperatures with an unzipped coat, I spoke with Marmot. They informed me that this zipper is notoriously difficult to zip. They told me she needs to make more of an effort to better align the zipper tracks before trying. When I explained to her that this is not a young child, and I have already instructed her to do this, and she still is unable to consistently zip the coat, I was told there's probably nothing they can do. I was offered to send in the coat (at my expense), so that it can be examined, but most likely it will be returned to me with instructions to better align the zipper tracks before trying. Needless to say I will be donating this coat to the nearest shelter and ordering a brand that I can rely on for the next winter season. How disappointing Marmot - $350 wasted!

Look no further!

This coat is worth the money! I have never had such a warm coat in my life. Honestly living in the upper Midwest with these bitter cold temps it's like it doesn't even phase me at all! Went to a football game the week I got it and it passed the tests and then some of keeping me perfectly warm! It was a freezing cold wet day too! Everything this coat covers is not affected one bit! The length is perfect! My only hang up with this coat is that it def tends to collect lint easily. I wouldn't wear anything with light colored fuzz like fuzzy gloves or hats with this coat bc it will def adhere to it. I wouldn't recommend to a person who has animals that shed. You'll be lint rolling alot. I don't have any pets so it doesn't effect me. The best feature of this coat I absolutely love is the extra fleeced lining on the inside of the arms starts at the elbow around and goes down to the wrist. Such an awesome feature and one I've never seen before! It helps keep my arms all bundled in and wrists area cut off from the cold. Very cozy too!! It is a bit more fitted to me than I'd expected but it's very flattering to my figure. It basically fits like a glove! I usually go with a medium in things to give myself some room for bulkier tops, but I don't really wear much of that even in the winter so I knew it should be ok. Also the small was much cheaper at the time so I grabbed it. Definetly took the risk of it possibly being too small bc I did see some other reviews that said it runs slightly small. I was a little nervous about that. However, once I zipped that puppy up I was so snug like a bug in it and it was so comfy I just fell in love! All around great product for the price I didnt regret spending the money at all, it's become now my all time favorite despite the minor lint issue! Oh and there's no problems with the zipper at all, I don't know what those other reviews meant with that but it's super easy to zipper! No problem!

Should have been the end of my search

I bought a bunch of coats and compared them. The others are Patagonia down with it and Marmot montreaux. This is definitely the warmest, its got all the great features of the montreaux plus it's totally waterproof. It should be perfect for hiking through windy, snowy, wet Philly in winter to get to my job that never closes.. I am returning because in comparison to the non waterproof montreaux, this coat is sort of stiffer and feels heavier (with obvious reason). It has a shape that isn't as desirable to me in that it flares out from the waist however this is personal preference because it definitely gives you a figure and is not "michelin man" at all. It just so happened they were out of black and even though the purple color is subtle and nice and pretty, it's not what I wanted. The zipper is a PITA but eventually I learned the right technique and it was not a problem after that so be patient and it won't get the best of you. Slightly tight in the chest area and the other Marmot coat was too though. (34DD) but less tight than the other coat - could wear a sweater under. Unfortunately the Patagonia was not warm at all - not even close - but it fit great. Hope this helps.

Just not for me but still a well coat

I originally ordered this is an XS hoping that it would fit but it was snug under my arms. I contacted Backcountry to send me out a updated size and received it in record time which was awesome. However, trying the new size i felt lost in the coat. The bottom was also so open that cold air blew right in when I went outside to test it. I also felt that it did not keep me as warm as my other Montreal Down coat which had the same 700 count fill. I wanted to get a new Marmot but longer and waterproof so looked at this one. It is a beautiful and well put but i am tiny and cold and this was just not the right fit for me. I did end up ordering the Montreaux after I returned this and cannot be happier! I have been buying this brand for over 5 years and can say I have never been more warm walking around the City in the winter with their coats. They also have lasted me years and would have lasted me years longer if my pesky dog didn't chase me for a treat and pop a hole in it trying to get me.

Very Nice

Bought this jacket for my gf's birthday. Needless to say, she loves it. Fit is right on as many other reviewers have said and it's a really nice looking coat. She said it's the warmest she's ever had!

Unusable zipper

Everything about this coat is perfect but I can’t justify spending that much money on a zipper I have to finagle for 5 minutes to get on. That would be impossible with mittens or gloves. I am returning the product.

Wanted to love but...

I wanted to love this coat because it felt like putting on a snug blanket all bundled up but the problem lied in the zipper. Well taking a few days to try the coat inside and outside, I fumbled with the zipper every time! It would take me at least 5 attempts to line the zipper up before it would finally catch. I also experienced the problem with it not being tight enough around the thighs allowing too much air circulation and chilly legs. It was all business on top though. Too bad. Love my other Marmot coat and was so hoping this would work.

Very warm for Boston winter

Love this coat! Extremely warm and also flattering. Love the fleece cuffs inside arms. I’m 5’3 133lbs and the medium fit great. Only thing I don’t love is the material picks up a lot of lint, but comes off easily with lint brush.

    Staying Warm on the East

Just ordered this jacket for my mom to survive the crazy East coast weather. She wished she had this earlier during the bomb cyclone but she's happy to have such a warm jacket to protect from the wind chill on the train platform. Arms a little tight for her, which could be tough for layering but since it's so warm, there has not been a need to layer up.

    Great for Utah Winters!

Gave this as a gift to my mom. She just uses it for her casual dog walks around the neighborhood. Works great in snowstorms as well! Got an XL as she is 6’. Fits well.

      So toasty

I spent a lot of time researching jackets that would be warm enough for Michigan winters, stylish, and comfortable. This fit all of my needs/wants! I don't feel too bulky in this jacket, but I feel super warm, from 20F to below zero. I do layer a NF fleece under when it's >15F. The only issues I have are pretty mild and I'm not too dramatic about minor inconveniences. The zipper takes a while to catch and zip, it can be hard to look left/right with the collar up (but I wouldn't change that bc it's so warm!!), and the pockets are kinda small (but they're fleece lined and have buttons to close). The length is amazing and keeps my thighs warm. I'm 5'4/140lbs and it hits just above my knee. I decided not to size up from a M bc I didn't want the coat to swallow me. I can see how people would see it as running small. It is a bit snug but I can still fit a fleece or sweater underneath comfortably. I drive/take mass transit so I wanted a jacket that I could easily drive in but was warm enough while waiting for the bus. This is perfect. I'm glad I finally got a jacket like this because I hate layering. I usually don't review things but this jacket is amazing!!

      Practically perfect in every way

I love this coat! It is waterproof, down, and stylish! I had it on and I thought, the only thing that would make this more perfect is a pocket on the inside and I looked and there it was! The only change I would make it to have an inner sleeve to hug the wrist. I don't find that it bellows out a lot at the bottom as did other reviewers.

      This jacket is everything!

I bought this jacket a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be happier; it is gorgeous. The color is great and matches with lots of other winter clothing I already own. I get so many compliments on it. It feels like wearing a cozy down blanket and is perfect for those of us that are always freezing. It is puffy without that "Michelin man" look. I bought a medium and it fits great; I am 5'2", 130 lbs and 34DD for reference. The jacket hits right about my knee; the sleeves I've found are the perfect length for me, although I don't have very long arms. The width across my upper back is comfortable in the medium; a couple of other reviews I'd read complained of this being an issue; I am quite petite from shoulder-to-shoulder and after trying on a small returned it for this same reason. It is very warm and perfect for the PNW winters we experience where I live; especially because it snows fiercely here and waterproofing is a necessity; I have not gotten wet once while wearing this out in light/medium intermittent rain. The hood is huge and will definitely aid in keeping the elements off your noggin (while also impairing your peripheral vision); my favorite part of the hood is that not only is it entirely removable, but the fur along the edge is removable as well making the jacket quite versatile. The fleece lining on the interior as well as on the inside of the sleeves (only where your wrists sit) is cozy and appreciated. The fleece lined pockets are deep enough for me to get my entire hand into and are also a favorite of this jacket. The zipper is metal and seems well-made; at first I had a little trouble with it but figured it out before long. The bottom does bell out a bit but not terribly. Mostly the only complaint I have is that a little wind does end up chilling my upper legs. I feel as if I could have gotten the small and this wouldn't have been a problem, but with sacrifices as it didn't fit as well as the medium. Overall I am delighted with my purchase; I would, without a doubt, recommend this jacket to anyone that doesn't want to sacrifice fashion for function AND wants to stay warm!

Thanks for the review Monica! Super helpful to get this feedback out to the community.

Guess who doesn't freeze walking around downtown anymore? --THIS WOMAN! Nice and roasty, oh so toasty, and perfect for bitter winter weather. This jacket is a beast. With a 700 down fill, it's too warm for a lot of activity. Shoveling snow in this thing definitely kept me warm. Maybe a little too warm. Love the deep hand pockets and the Steel Onyx color is perfect for black or brown boots.

      Really warm and comfortable

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: XL

I am 5'6" and normally fluctuate between sizes 10-14 and am currently right at 14, so bought the XL to accommodate my different sizes. I don't often wear big sweaters or thick clothing even though I live in Chicago, and just rely on coats to keep me warm outside (I am always too hot inside!).

So the XL fits my size-14 body w/ 40DD bra size really well, although if you are my size and DO like to wear thick clothing it may be too tight for you. It's a tiny bit more snug around the hips than up top, as there's a lot of room in the shoulders and back to move comfortably. I am short-waisted and it shows a little bit in the back, but it's much less noticeable than many other coats I've tried recently.

The A-line bottom of the coat that other reviewers didn't like as much is actually really flattering on me and allows me to walk easily without letting the cold in.

I love the fleece sleeves and how the hood can be attached at the front of the neck for really cold/windy/wet days.

All in all, I love the coat and plan to use a belt to cinch in the waist if I get back down to a 12 or 10 before next winter.

      Wanted to love it, but...

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

This is a beautiful coat, and as far as styling goes, I loved it. The faux fur hood alone almost made me keep it. That being said...I had the "fat guy in a little coat" problem, even with buying a size larger than I normally wear. I have a tall, athletic build, with long arms and broad shoulders. Not only were the arms of this coat too short, I couldn't bend over or move my shoulders without feeling constrained. I had been looking forward to the internal fleece cuffs, but they didn't even make it to my wrists.

Conversely, the torso was too big. I normally wear a size 4 or 6 but purchased a medium to make sure I had room for sweaters. Even with an oversized wool sweater on, the coat was still too big around the waist. If there was some way to cinch it--such as with an internal elastic drawstring--that may have pushed me to keep it despite the shoulder problem.

Before returning it, I did test it outside in 5 degrees F with a brisk wind, and I will say it's windproof and warm as all get out. The hood is deep and the fur trim is soft and pretty. The snaps close securely and the pockets are roomy. There's a cool phone pouch inside with a vent for your headphones. However, the bell flare at the bottom is wide, and guess what, all that cold wind went right up inside the gap as I was walking around, leaving my butt and thighs chilly.

I'd say buy this coat if style is a top concern for you, if you're not a mesomorph body type, or if you're not planning on being very active in it. Returning it was a tough decision.

      Great coat

This coat is stylish and warm but it does run a bit big in the hips. I am 5'7 and 120 lbs and it fit fine up top but was like wearing a giant bell skirt at the bottom. I ordered a small, definitely need an XS but it's sold out in black.

      Didn't work for me

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: Medium and Small

I am 5'6", 130lbs, thin, athletic build. I am somewhat muscled across the shoulder blades from doing pullups and such, and also have abnormally long arms. I normally wear a size 2 in most clothing, sometimes size 4, and size Small in non-numbered clothing sizes. But for winter coats, I am having a problem finding anything that will fit comfortably. I ordered this coat in S and M, hoping one of the sizes would work. But the sleeves on both were a few inches too short for me, and both sizes were too tight across the shoulder blades, even though the Medium was quite large in the rest of the torso. I also ordered the Marmot Montreal down parka, and had the same shoulder blade width problem. So I guess this brand is not for me. I will have to continue searching for a company that makes jackets to accommodate muscles in small women with long arms.

One other stylistic thing to note is that when on, this coat flares out oddly at the bottom. I think it would look better if it was just a bit shorter (maybe 3-4 inches shorter at the bottom), and didn't have that flare. It just looks awkward. Other than the fit issues, it is a beautiful coat, and appears to be very high quality. I with the fit had worked for me. I will continue my search.

      How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Measure from the center of your back to your wrist with arms held out.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
