Awesome Warmth & Fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

Love this jacket! I bought one at the beginning of the season and it's been tested out over the cold winter weather of Chicago. I just ordered a second in black as its a versitile piece. I am impressed with how warm this jacket is compared to down. Yes it doesn't pack down as much as down but being synthetic it keeps you warm when damp/wet.

couldn't find inside zippered pocket

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: small

I couldn't find the inside zippered pocket as described which can be used to pack the jacket. So I'm returning it.

A Standard

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This jacket is a great all-round, reliable puffer. Take it whenever and wherever you go out. Hiking with the pup? You got it. Long, cold approach to the crag? Easy. Heading out on the town in a snowstorm? No problem. It's small enough to fit easily into your pack when you feel the need to shed layers, and thin enough to put a waterproof layer over top in heavy downpour. Would recommend if you're in the market for a versatile puffer.

Very toasty

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Size Bought: Large

The avant featherless was super comfortable and kept me feeling very toasty in 20 degree weather. The hood was great for neck and ear warmth and I really enjoy the cuffs. I was able to be active and feel professional wearing this jacket. It does everything you would want a jacket of this caliber to do.

I can't believe it's not feather

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

For being a synthetic jacket this one acts and feels just like a 750 down fill power jacket, in my opinion. It has a fantastic loft that helps to keep out the warm even when it is wet. If you are looking for an alternative to a down jacket then look no further than this jacket!

Did you say Featherless?

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XL

As the title suggests I had absolutely no clue this jacket wasn't down when I first tried it on. This jacket is just as light as, and in some cases lighter, some of the true down options out there (ie. Marmot Highlander) AND offers you the much desired rain protection you crave during those brisk Fall Showers (curtesy of the 3M Thinsulate technology). Side note: if you would rather pass on taking it out in the rain, it fits PERFECTLY under the Marmot Minimalist jacket.

In terms of warmth this jacket compares to a 700-800 fill down jacket, IT'S TOASTY. I have not gotten the chance to take it out in the winter conditions but for the 20 degree no sun morning windshield scraping I have yet to get remotely cold.

This leads me to my favorite feature of the jacket and the reason why I choose it over several of my other jackets on hikes and during the morning scraping; it is EXTREMELY versatile. When I'm scraping, reaching to grab a rock, or even giving a hug this jacket stays put. No riding up or hinderance in movement. The Angel-Wing movement is no joke ladies and gentlemen. Once you experience it you'll never forget how amazing it really is....ever.

The pocket game on this jacket is simple but effective. The exterior chest pocket is under the insulation so your phone won't go into cold glitch mode and you can turn either pocket inside out and stuff the jacket into it for quick packability/storage.

Lastly, I'll talk quickly about fit. This jacket is made for athletic builds and you will likely need to size up if you have a little beer baby, that's just how it be. I like my stuff a little bigger, it's just my style, I AM NOT NORMAL, maybe I want to be prepared for a beer belly, who know. If you have the same specs as me I would get a Large for a fitted look. However, if you happen to be an oddball, like myself, and want something a little bigger the waist cinch will keep the snow out and the heat in!

My only fear is that if this jacket snagged on something sharp it might rip easier than other jackets, as the top layer seems a bit thin.

Overall, I think this jacket is a testament to advancement in synthetic technology and might just maybe out perform your typical down jacket!

Loft or Love? Both

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

The only gripe I had with this jacket was it was slightly shorter than I prefer, but all in all it turned out a lot better than I expected. The biggest feature is the angel wings in the back allowing for more maneuverability. As it was a bit short, it never rode up exposing skin which is a huge win especially with the colder weather coming. Perfect sleeve length and I enjoy the stretchy hem around the hood keeping it down and over your head instead of flying off in the wind. Plenty of warmth of course with great loft, but does not feel like I'm a snowman. Wicked cool jacket indeed.

Lofty Synthetic Insulation

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

The Avant Featherless is really great. It lives up to its name very well with high loft in the baffles that looks like down and an overall performance and feel that is as close to down as i have seen so far in the synthetic category. There are of course some drawbacks such as smallest packed size it is capable of, but for a great mid synthetic layer it is a very good and toasty warm option.

Warm and comfy

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: Runs small

My boyfriend really liked this jacket other than the arms were a little short for his liking. He is 6'0" and found the length of the sleeves to be short. He said it was very warm and comfy. Loves it for care camping or for walks during the winter..

Nice jacket. Skinny arms.

This is everything I want except the ability to layer. The quality, material, and color are great. The forearms are so tight it was uncomfortable to wear anything other than a short sleeved shirt. A heavier sweater was uncomfortably restrictive. There is no coat hanging loop, or drawcord for the hood if you care about that. Sadly, I’ll need to swap this for something that fits my Arms better.

    Great for Inactive pursuits

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

This coat is incredibly warm for its size. Not quite as light as a down coat of similar volume, this coat surprised me with how warm it was. I wore it in 25 degree weather and was very comfortable with a light vest (patagonia nano air) underneath. There is always a loss in packability with synthetic versus down, so this coat is a perfect layer for camping in the mountains but perhaps not your ultra light backpacking trip. The length of the large was perfect for 6'3" 200lbs. Most larges are a just a tad short where this was exactly what I want a large coat to fit like!

    Banish your synthetic doubts

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I'm traditionally a bit skeptical on synthetic insulation. this thing flipped me. Light, warm, and puffy, you'll never have to worry about leaking feathers or clumping. Also quite stylish in my opinion. The jacket only has the features you need. 2 hand pockets, 1 chest pocket, waist drawstring in the hand pockets, and a hood that doesn't get in your way--on or off. Stuffs down small for easy transport. I loved this thing.

    Great alternative to down

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

This is a great jacket alternative to down! My husband wore it and he said it kept him really warm! It's cozy and looks great. Because it's synthetic it doesn't compact down quite as small as a down jacket, but it felt just as light and warm as any of his down jackets. Hasn't worn it when it's rained so I don't know how water resistant it is. Overall, big fan!

    Awfully cool, killer jacket

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

Keeps out the wind, weighs next to nothing, and offers down warmth without down drawbacks. Super pack able and can handle frigid days, but maybe a little too well? It can get too warm in this jacket. It can also be louder than I want when just walking around. Plus, the sheen isn't quite my style.
    Still dig it though!

    Toasty, durable, and adaptable

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I tested the Avant exclusively in my home state of Colorado up to elevations near 13,000 ft. in a range of weather from -5℉ (-20.6℃) and dumping snow to sunny and 55 ℉(12.8℃). During that time I really came to love the puffy for its warmth, durability, and ability to excel on each of my adventures. On hut trips I typically head out into the night with a big puffy jacket and pants to photograph starry skies over the cabin but on both of these trips I substituted larger puffy for the mid-weight Avant. Filled with synthetic insulation the equivalent to 700 fill power down it kept out the cold nicely while standing still at 5℉ (-15℃) when worn with puffy pants, below that temperature I started to feel the cold unless I got moving to generate more heat. While skiing a full day at Copper Mountain I was almost perfect from the cold snowy morning to the sunny blue-bird afternoon; I briefly got hot when working harder in steep moguls and north facing back bowls. It's definitely too warm for me to wear when skinning uphill, but I'm usually only wearing a thin shell or base-layer at that point.

    Toasty, durable, and adaptable

    Lightweight, soft antd warm

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Medium

Got this one. Runs a bit smaller in chest but the sleeves are Ok! No hanging loop inside and no inner pockets. But I like it!

    Excellent non-down warmth

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I love this jacket. No critters suffer in the making, and it performs extremely well. My buddy and my girlfriend both bought one after seeing mine. It's quite warm, and it does much better against wind and light rain than I expected from a puffy. It's lightweight and durable. Compresses pretty well. Layers nicely (I put my Marmot Mobilis over it, or my hard shell, for great snowy/wet day protection). Has a zipper guard at the top for us bearded guys. Couldn't ask for better from Marmot, and I will definitely buy another one if mine ever gives out (or maybe even before!).

I think it's true to size, it pinches me in the armpits just slightly when I reach my arms forward, but not as much as most jackets do. I have a pretty broad chest and back for my smaller size, so this is almost always an issue for me.

    How about a magic trick?

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

Chances are if you show someone who hasn't seen the Avant before and ask them if it's down or synthetic, they'll have a hard time guessing. Marmot is continuing to blur the lines of synthetic vs down, and the Avant is the best yet! It's just as warm as a 700fill down jacket, and maintains nearly the same warmth to weight ratio. But...it keeps you warm when wet. The Avant is the obvious choice. The cut is on the athletic side with a more durable woven baffle throughout. Approved by ducks everywhere!

For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Measure around the thickest part of your neck, holding tape loosely.
Measure from the center of your back to your wrist with arms held out.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
