8000 Meter Mitten

The Marmot 8000 Meter Mitten. Hopefully the name gives you some indication of how far you can push into nasty weather while wearing this mountaineering-style mitt. Multiple varieties of Gore-Tex fabric and membrane technology protect your hand from wet conditions, wind, and sweat, while high-loft, 700-fill goose down insulation fends off thermometer-crushing cold. Slide your hand inside this gauntlet-style mitt, wrap the leather-reinforced palm around your ice tool, and charge up a tricky alpine route with confidence that your digits are safe and sound.

  • Hardcore winter mitts for the toughest alpine conditions
  • Highly durable ripstop fabric can take season after season of winter
  • Waterproof breathable Gore-Tex Mitt insert repels wind and snow
  • Paclite is light and low bulk without sacrificing weather protection
  • Toasty Primaloft offers compressible, water-repellent performance
  • Removable inner mitten is insulated with lofty, 700+ fill goose down
  • Palm is reinforced with leather for better grip and durability
  • Wrist strap and drawcord secure the mitten and keep snow out

Really warm

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I use to have freezing hands, but with this mitten for first time solves all my problems.

Warmest Mitten I Own January 2018

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought these 8000 meter mittens a year ago for blowing snow in the cold of Michigan on my tractor. No problem shifting or operating tractors with these mittens on. Also bought them for skiing in Utah on cold days with no issues.
They have had quite the workout and my fingers have never gotten cold.
Hands warm from the time I put them on until coming inside a few hours later. Definitely a cold weather mitten. I highly recommend these if your hands ever get cold.

Avid Outdoorsman and Skier

versatile, warm, but short-lived

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I purchased these gloves in late 2012, and have used them during winter hiking in the White Mountains of NH ever since. More often than not, I just use the red GTX outer shell over a pair of Seirus all-weather gloves; this combination is perfect when ascending, to temperatures down to the teens. When it is in the single digits, or during cold descents, I'll use the down mitts underneath. Using them like this, they were perfect for a wide range of conditions.

Sadly, for expensive gloves, they are simply not robust enough. One of the straps used to tighten around the cuff tore during normal use in 2015, and Marmot repaired it under warranty (took about 5 weeks.) However, later that winter the gloves began leaking. Both thumbs have small wear through near the tip (one is now covered with tape as you can see in the photo.) This is a high usage area, but the leather palms don't wrap around far enough to protect it. For use in actual mountain hiking, during which hands are needed, the design is simply not good enough. Marmot makes it very clear on their website that wear through and leakage are considered "normal wear and tear" and are not covered under warranty. I got four full years of use from these gloves, but frankly I don't think that is good enough for a glove in this price range. I won't buy them again. They would be five star gloves if they lasted longer, I'll still give them three because they were great while they lasted.

Yes to Keeping Warm

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

The mittens are very comfortable and allow more dexterity than my other big mitts.

It had better be cold..........

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

These mittens are really only useful when the temperature drops below 10ºF. Above that and your hands really perspire. Aside from the size and lack of dexterity on them, they are great for wearing at the local outdoor hockey rink while watching games.
