Great pair of boots!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

In a word, these boots are very light, comfortable right out of the box! I really had next to no break in time. I wanted a great pair of boots for everything but serious back packing and these fit the bill! As usual, the Gore-Tex keeps my feet dry and the Vibram soles work well! Yes, buy these boots!

Thank you for the review, Rob!

Sturdy

The leather is good and will withstand harsh treatment. My only complaint about the boot is that the insole provides zero cusion and the outsole is rather stiff. So, for an old guy with bad sticks, wearing the boot as-is can be pretty painful. Using a cushioning insole would be good, but you'll have to size up slightly, or the fit will be tight.

Bought these boots for my dad for X mas and he absolutely loves them! Great boots and they fit true to size.

Great Boots

These boots are very comfortable and hold up very well. I got these as a gift and he loves them so much I got him another pair!

    Wide

Love these boots, I like the fit and the look and they hold up really well but they are pretty wide in the forefoot. My feet aren't narrow and still have a lot of room up front in these unfortunately.

      Great boots!

These boots are awesome! Bought them as a gift. He will not try any other brand because he loves the Lowa Renegade so much. Outstanding in keeping your feet warm and dry. Very durable!

        Great shoes!

So far these have been good boots. I have taken these on a couple backpacking trips and the comfort is great. I like the deep soles on these shoes that keep my feet safe on the rugged terrain.

what shoe size did you go with? did you find it to be true to size?

I am a professional forester working in Colorado. I like a lightweight boot that's sturdy and can handle being put through the wringer. My last pair of Lowa's lasted me two full field seasons before busting some seems. I was disappointed with the Renegades as i've busted the seems out of both sides of this boots within 6 months (half of which i was sitting at my computer working from the office). This boot fit great out of the box and was super light weight...just didn't hold up to the job. Maybe a good boot for someone hiking on trail...maybe Lowa can reinforce their stitching to make these puppies last.

          great boot

Great fit. Have slopped through a lot of mucky water, my feet have been dry every time.

          Amazing boot

So badly wanted to give this boot 5 stars. They are incredibly well built. The lacing system with integrated tongue hugs your foot perfectly. The "flex" is perfect for a fast/light hiker. The soles are aggressive and deep for this style of boot. Might even be an all-time boot for me. Where it is lacking is the insoles. Really wish they would have added slightly more cushioning. I have already ordered replacements. Can't say how awesome this boot is! Really wish Lowa would have nailed the insole because they nailed everything else.

            great boot , but

I wrote a previous review of these boots at ~ 200 miles of use... me, a Sierra wanderer.
To add...While a great pair of boots initially, super comfy right out of the box, they fell apart after ~ 500 miles - Both toe caps suffered a delam , and the seam at the outside, (little toe area) split wide open. While a possible field fix w/ super glue, needle and thread, and shoe goo, for $250 expected more durability. Sent them back in to manufacturer and was told that these boots not designed for off-trail work, which surprised me as the many ads seen tout this as primo Sierra footwear...NOT ! No replacement help offered either.
Great boot initially but realize they are a throw away after 1+ season.

            great boot , but

Thanks for the honest review Mark. We need more of those.

I have tried out many boots over the years. These are the only ones I wore out and purchased the same brand and model again. My first pair did have some toe cap separation and I used several different glues before I found one that seemed to work. These boots never leaked in spite of all the snow step kicking and Pacific Northwest rain. They fit me (other people may differ) extremely well and I purchased size 10.5 just like all my other shoes and they were true to size. They are a bit more pricey than I would like, but I don't think it is wise to save money if it makes your feet less comfortable. Although I go with a hiking shoe in summer, these boots work well for the other 3 seasons. I think the construction, design, and quality are worth the price alone, not to mention the comfort. They are so comfortable I wear them around camp loosely laced instead of carrying Moccasins like I used to do. I treat them with an aquious Nick Wax product that seems to several trips (but they don't leak even when I am negligent in my treatments). I gave a bad review on my first pair because they leaked through the tongue gusset but I now treat that well and that problem has been forestalled. BTY, I purchased a pair of boots between my two Renegade purchases and returned them because the Renegades were so much more comfortable: and I was suffering from separation anxiety without my Renegades.

I bought these boots 2 years ago on my way to work in Yellowstone for a summer. I could not be more happy with them. Comfortable, durable, waterproof, stylish. Everything you want in a great backpacking boot. The break in time was short and they were comfortable even while I was breaking them in. They fit true to size and you can tighten them up in all the right places to ensure no blisters and a comfortable fit. I have put hundreds of miles on these now and when I have to retire them I will be getting another pair.

Love my Lowa boots! There was very little time needed to break these boots in and I have never had a blister or hot spot with them. Have owned and worn them for 3 years--1 full year I wore them daily working wilderness therapy. Only recently has the stitching begun to unravel a bit near the toes. They have gripped the red rocks of Utah well and also taken me across 25 miles of rough California coastal trails without issue. If submerged in water, my feet have gotten wet, however they do dry out rather quick. Fit is snug/comfy and I have narrow feet. If you are someone who is looking for an overall solid performing boot, renegades are a great way to go.

I've got a lot of hiking boots/shoes for different purposes but these are my favorite all round every day boots. I'm a 6' 200lb photojournalist that covers a lot of outdoor activities with worldwide travel and am always lugging heavy equipment. I bought these for a trip to Afghanistan in 2012 and have worn these daily around town during the fall/winter. I consider them a mid-weight. They required very little break in and have held up surprising well considering the amount of stitching. I have low volume size 11.5-12 feet and the 12s in these are on the wide side but a pair of Superfeet green insoles fills them out perfectly.
They're not only good on the trail but the style works well with khakis and a sport coat for around town.
I go with something heavier for long trips with a heavy pack and wear light hiking shoes during the summer, but I always look forward to putting these on and am back here to buy a new pair.

This is the third pair of Lowa boots I have owned. From their light weight hiking boot to a trekking boot, Lowa's have been the most comfortable boot right out of the box. These boots were also very comfortable right out of the box. No issues to report after several good hikes on rocky terrain. They breath well for an all leather boot. They have good traction on wet rocks through stream crossings. Since they are new the water beaded up immediately and did not soak the leather.

This is the most comfortable hiking boot I have used to date. It is light weight, fits my foot well, wears well on heels and toes. It also breathes well and is not too hot. It is my new go to boot for day hiking and plan to take it on longer trips this summer.

            All about the boots

            • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Purchased these for a buddy and this is the response back from him. I've owned these boots before and liked them enough to buy again. When I was first in the market for hiking boots, I went and tried on a bunch on. The issue I had with other popular brands like Vasque, Merrell and Keen was that there were too narrow and I don't have wide feet, but when I tried on the Renegade, even though it cost more then I wanted to spend, the fit was absolutely perfect and bought them on the spot.

I do feel like there's a small breaking in period with them, they get more comfortable the more you wear them. The stock insoles could probably use an upgrade though. After a couple of seasons hiking in Denali, I did start getting some foot pain, but it was very minor.

All in all, these are a great boot for a multitude of terrain

As a backpacking guide I bought these to use on 7-15 mile moderate days with a 45-60lb pack. I never had hiked with a pair of high top boots before and wanted as much support as I could get, even though I do not have problematic (weak) ankles. I was sold with the awesome fit right out of the box and super light weight. However, after breaking them in for a few weeks I did start to get pain in my heel during the later part of 10+ mile days. It did seem to lessen with time, but moving to the Adidas Terrex Fast 475 ultimately made my feet feel better and allowed for better mobility for rocky trails.
I also found the durability to be lacking. If I would have read the specs before buying I would have learned that these boots are only designed for on trail use. I thought this was crazy at first, but it turns out this is more the standard than the exception for this type of shoe. Ok, so they were grossly inadequate for my intended use. Still, I put ~250 miles of on trail use on them before I decided that the longevity was insufficient. The final straw was snapping both shoelaces within a week. It’s not a huge deal to replace these, but I expect a $230 boot to have some top-of-the-line laces. I heard that the quality has gone downhill, however it looks like Lowa has released a newer model in Fall 2015.
